Dhaka, Dec 3 (UNB) - Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for Tuesday demanding the release of its detained top leaders, withdrawal of ‘false cases’ filed against them and holding the next general election under a caretaker government.
Jamaat acting secretary Dr Shafiqur Rahman made the announcement in a press statement on Monday.
The Jamaat leader urged all to make the hartal an all-out success.
Shafiqu said, “The country is gradually heading towards destruction due to misrule by the Awami League-led grand alliance government.
The government is busy conspiring to return to power instead of implementing its electoral pledges. “The government has resorted to coercive acts so that the opposition can’t wage any movement against its limitless failures,” said the statement.
“Jamaat is always respectful of the laws of the land. It believes in peaceful and lawful movement. But, the government is not allowing the party to observe any democratic programme in a peaceful manner. “But holding rallies and bringing out processions are our constitutional and democratic rights,” it reads.
“The government is not only snatching our democratic and constitutional rights, but also has arrested thousands of leaders and activists of the party, including key leaders, in false cases and tortured them.”
It alleged that the government is holding a farcical trial in the name of war crimes trial bringing so-called charges of war crimes against the top Jamaat leaders.
Jamaat has decided to observe lawful and peaceful programmes showing respect for the law to protest such coercive measures of the government.
The statement said the party has announced the countrywide protest programme for December 3 on November 29, and subsequently applied to the authorities concerned, seeking permission for observing the programme.
“But unfortunately the government did not permit Jamaat for holding rallies across the country. Instead, Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir on Sunday claimed the Jamaat sought no permission in this regard,”
“The minister said this only to misguide people. These incidents prove that Awami League doesn’t believe in democracy. They want to reestablish one-party Baksal in the country.”
Justifying its hartal call, the statement said the party is forced to call the hartal as it was not permitted to stage its peaceful programmes.
