Jakarta, Indonesian capital, home of more than 10 millions people. One of largest Metropolitan City in ASEAN in which the metropolitan area had as many as 30 million peoples administered under the banner Jabodetabek area. A bustling city, vibrant and dynamic, ugly and beautiful in one, had undergoing major transformation in the last five years. The city in which in the past notorious for its slump area, wide scale riots and mass demonstration scene and right now had and still undergo major change under the provision of it's current Governor and the one before him. This thread is dedicated for people who wants to know more about Jakarta and the surrounding news about it.

Of the many museums in Jakarta, Museum Taman Prasasti has its own uniqueness. Behind the feel of gloomy, silent and shady trees growing in it, the museum holds so many stories of important figures from various different historical periods. Indeed, this museum is devoted to storing various kinds of gravestones and inscriptions that have a high historical value.

Inaugurated in 1977 by Jakarta Governor Ali Sadikin, the museum was previously only a tomb named Kebon Jahe Kober. That's why the nuances of 'dark' so blanketed an area of 1.2 hectares. Dark tourism itself is one that brings the concept of alternative tourism object, attractions and exhibits shades of death, grief, gloom and misery.

The cemetery itself has been around since the Dutch colonial period, precisely in 1795. When that happened a plague that makes many Dutch citizens died in Batavia. This makes the need for burial land increased significantly. At the time, Dutch citizen cemetery beside the New Church (Nieuwe Hollandse Kerk, now Museum Wayang) is already too crowded.

Jakarta Kota Tua (Jakarta, Old City district)

216022_620.jpg

Wisata-Kota-Tua-Jakarta.jpg

Kota Tua Jakarta ("Jakarta Old Town"), officially known as Kota Tua, is a neighborhood comprising the original downtown area of Jakarta, Indonesia. It is also known as Oud Batavia (Dutch "Old Batavia"), Benedenstad (Dutch "Lower City", contrasting it with Weltevreden, de Bovenstad ("Upper City")), or Kota Lama (Indonesian "Old Town"). It spans 1.3 square kilometres within North Jakarta and West Jakarta (Kelurahan Pinangsia, Taman Sari and Kelurahan Roa Malaka, Tambora). The largely Chinese downtown area of Glodok is a part of Kota Tua.

Kota Tua is a remainder of Oud Batavia, the first walled settlement of the Dutch in Jakarta area. It was an inner walled city with its own Castle. The area gained importance during the 17th-19th century when it was established as the de facto capital of the Dutch East Indies. This inner walled city contrasted with the surrounding kampung (villages), orchards, and rice fields. Dubbed "The Jewel of Asia" in the 16th century by European sailors, the area was a center of commerce due to its strategic location within the spice trade industry in the archipelago.

Excellent thread.

thanks, not many member know much about Jakarta actually. The recent keyword is only demonstration against Ahok and killer traffic jam

Jakarta is much more cleaner and greener, than said the Jakarta itself 5 or 7 years ago. It was all thanks to determined efforts from the Administrative Government to strive for Jakarta Bersih (Clean). The clean river around and in the City is one of the indicator how clean your city it is....but Jakarta still had many homework actually

the effort to made Jakarta much cleaner, greener and liveable is not without controversy. The current Gov. Ahok (Basuki Tjahaya Purnama) found himself at cornered many times by his political opponents over his harsh decision to demolish and relocate slump area district into new housing and apartment complexes owned by Jakarta municipality. But till now Ahok still prevail and getting a lot of support from many Jakartan

That's why you should promote your city more, don't expect those so-called mainstream media (in English) from the west to say any good about non-west.

I've to Jakarta twice, very modern and vibrant city. Keep up the good work sis, more pics!

Jakarta is notoriously know for her killer traffic jam. For any would be traveler it was strongly recommended not to travel to Central District, Old Town and Office district (South Jakarta SCBD Sudirman, Gatsu and Pasar Minggu) at rush hour

mass and public transportation is here and there, but inadequate in number, after all Jakarta is grown at breakneck pace. But i had to admit, Jakarta had worse management plan and system in the past, till Joko Widodo take place as Governor of Jakarta actual efforts being put in place

Jakarta, like other cities in this world is currently engaging in an efforts to built as many as parks and open public spaces. Once again this effort is not without controversy, because to create more open space the government had to demolish slump area and illegal housing complexes in Jakarta.

Traffic is always a headache for big cities. What's status of metro? Please share, perhaps that's the best transport for visitors to move around in the city.

P.S.: Is that yourself in the last pic?
