Global experts sound warning on Jaitapur nuke plant

Dont forget devastation at Chernobyl'

31 Dec 2010, 1025 hrs IST, AGENCIES

The controversial 9900 MW nuclear power park at Jaitapur has not only raised concerns by people on Indian soil, but also world over. Global experts have warned India of making another mistake like the Chernobyl disaster.

Vladimir Chuprov, the head of energy programs at Greenpeace in Russia said, "India must not forget the devastation at Chernobyl. Instead the nation should look for renewable energy. The country must not repeat mistakes made by other developed nations. Jaitapur nuclear plant is in seismic zone."

Thousands of fishermen, farmers and their families in Jaitapur in western Maharashtra state have expressed dissapointment over the loss of homes and agricultural land, as well as voiced fears about radiation and pollution.

Environmentalists also oppose building the French-backed facility because of its location in the ecologically-sensitive Western Ghats mountain range and a high-risk earthquake zone, plus India's lack of an independent nuclear regulator.

"The authorities are trying to spin this as people wanting more money," Lauri Myllyvirta, an energy campaigner at Greenpeace.

"But the people just want to have their land and have the security of that lifestyle and income. They're very concerned about the radiation risk and whether there will be a waste-reprocessing facility on the site," added Lauri

Years of wrangling over land, compensation and environmental impact have become a regular feature of many projects aimed at developing modern India.

High-profile disputes include plans for a second airport on protected wetlands to service India's financial hub of Mumbai and a plan by Tata Motors to build a new manufacturing plant for the world's cheapest car, the Nano.

Yes, concern is rising day by day.

But NPCIL and DAE offiicials have increased their participation in the media to quell any fears with this plant.

I have seen several programs on this topic.

What are points that they are presenting to quell the fear ? this is just fresh warning from Russian Experts

nearly whole of jAPAN IS IN EARTH QUAKE ZONE...............never heard of nuclear accident their...............

.
Every fvckin project that comes up gets hijacked either by the bureaucrats or the politicians or if they manage to cross all this by the environmentalists.

How the heck are we supposed to provide electricity to our burgeoning population if no new plants are built. Nuclear energy is supposed to be one of the cleanest forms of energy.

Also I find it ridiculous when these environmentalists use examples like Chernobyl etc. Aircraft accidents happen all the time, does that prevent us from travelling by it ?? Nuke related accidents are very few and very inbetween.

Oh and BTW Areva is supposed to be the worlds leader in nuke power generation technology - both in efficiency and in safety.

Points relate to the reactor design, control systems that will be in place, data available from past where earthquakes have occurred close to nuclear power stations (incl. the one that happened in Maharashtra a few years back).

This reactor is being supplied by the French and over exaggeration of warnings by ppl from rival companies (incl. Russian) cannot be ruled out.

NPCIL has several decades of experience in this line and scientists there have done their studies.

^^
jaitipur project is not going to get Hijacked (this is not WB)

Environmental ministry has already given the clearance. Remember the current CM of Maharashtra is an engineer

i have not much information about their nuclear plants and location whether in Seismic Zone or not so i dont know what measures they took. what experts say.

You could be right about rival Russian Cos but again report/s by your own Indian institutes also warned few days back.

as far as NPCIL yes it could be very much experienced but reports say it is not providing full facts to the public.

Jaitapur nuke plant will be a social disaster: TISS report

A social impact assessment review conducted by Jamshetji Tata centre for disaster management of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has torn into the nuclear power plant being proposed at Jaitapur in the Konkan region.

The report has indicated that the project — which requires about 968 hectares of land panning five villages — will have a huge negative impact on the social as well as environmental development of not just these villages and the surrounding areas, but also on the Konkan region in general.

The detailed report was prepared by researchers in April. Some of the findings suggest that a large part of land to be acquired for the project is being used for agriculture, horticulture and grazing purposes, and that the government has subverted facts by labelling it barren land.

“Farmers and horticulturists have spent lakhs of rupees to make the land cultivable over years and even the government has supported them. This includes Alfonso mangoes and cashews. Now, when the time has come for them to reap their investments, they are afraid of losing their land as the government now claims it is barren land,” says the report. It adds that even the fisherfolk of the region are against the project.

“Their fear that the fishes will migrate to deeper waters due to release of hot water from the reactors is not unjustified. Apart from fishing, other allied activities will also be adversely affected,” says the report, which was prepared after interviewing villagers.

One of the major concerns expressed in the report is the lack of transparency in dissemination of information about the project on the part of the government and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL). “It is necessary that the government ensures full transparency in implementation. But the information can be accessed only through RTI, and people seem to be losing faith in the government,” the report states.

The report states there is a lack of clarity on the exact amount of land that has been earmarked for acquisition. “Even the amount of compensation and the kind of rehabilitation that the project affected will get is not clear. Moreover, there is a lot of manipulation of information, which is disturbing people.

Notification of area from high severity earthquake zone to moderate seismic severity zone seems to be one of them. The government is not only hiding facts, but also manipulating them,” alleges the report.

I have been to TISS myself and have great respect for that institute.
But you see this industry is worth several billions of dollars, with so much money involved, the entity on the loosing side resortss to such things.

ALso, the plant will employ a reactor design which is yet un-operational, so detractors have lot of points in their protests against the plant.

.
Yes Indians should consult the Japs regarding the matter because they are not only the champions when it comes to earthquake proofing but also they have vast experience of building nuclear plants on faulty land.

Greenpeace :rolleyes:is not an expert of Nuclear Power. Besides this isn't the first nuclear plant that is being made in India. Chernobyl Accident was just that, an Accident. If we go by the logic of Russian Greanpeace activist, the expert on everything nuclear, one should have stopped all commercial flights the moment a plane crashed, stopped driving the moment a car had an accident and so on.

Point is India needs energy, and nuclear seems like the way to go. With diligence and discipline all OH&S issues can be taken care of. Look at France, 78.8% of their power is being sourced from nuclear powered plants, i don't see no french dying due to nuclear catastrophe. Nuclear power is the way to go for India and all of Asia.

.
Greenpeace, from the name it looks like its a promoter of renewable energy.
the problem here is not the source but the piece of land where it is building. There is a high possibility of earthquake.

Greenpeace are a bunch of deluded hippy morons.

Who knows they're all probably closet Eco-Terrorists

Rocket attack

Against a background of ongoing protest and low-level sabotage, on the night of January 18, 1982 an RPG-7 rocket-propelled grenade attack was launched against the unfinished plant allegedly by Carlos the Jackal and his wife Magdalena Kopp. Five rockets were fired across the Rhone River at the incomplete containment building, and two hit and caused minor damage to the reinforced concrete outer shell, missing the reactor's empty core.

Not peace loving hippies eh

I personally know GoI scientists who have carried out the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of this Jaitapur project. They have studied all these questions regarding the environmental hazards of this plant.

They have suggested a huge number of security measures and effluent treatment processes to make this a green project....

Based on their recommendation the Mo Env. & forests has cleared this project with a clause of continuous monitoring.

This project is as secure and environment friendly as the best in the world!

P.S. The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) is the research institute I'm talking about.

One of it's key mandates is--
To render assistance to the industries of the region, local bodies, etc. in solving the problems of environmental pollution.

They are the foremost experts in environmental sciences in India and I'd always take their word over that greenpeace dude.
:agree:
