Overall the aerodynamic design of J-10 seems advanced as is evident from wing-fuselage blending, flare of nose-fuselage like that of Flanker, new air intake design and advanced wing design.

However, if someone can post the performance figures of J-10, only then we shall be able to compare it with F-15 and Su-27 Flanker.

Now it remains to integrated weapons systems to J-10, install a capable multi-mode radar and EW system. Ideally, J-10 should be able to be mated with either US, French or Russian weapon systems.

Even if J-10 is mated with Russian weapon systems, it can prove to be a formidable air superiority fighter. If the internal fuel capacity is good enough, then for homeland air defence missions, J-10 would not need to carry fuel tanks. Only air-to-air load for better flight performance.

This capability is important for catching up with fleeing intruders.




I don't think so. J-10 is not meant to be a superiority fighter. It is a light/(at most) medium multi-role fighter, akin to F-16. Its weapon load out, performance seems to indicate that. Also to note is that China is still pursuing J-11B, and Su-33/Su-30 MK2. These are the REAL superiority fighters. If J-10 is really a superiority fighter, PLAAF would have abandon J-11b, and stops purchasing Su-30MK2 or Su-33. But PLAAF doesn't, so it indicate J-10 is still just a light-multi-role fighter, with J-11B/Su-30 MK2 complement it as "Hi-Lo" mix.

Su-30MKK/MK2 are configured as fighter-bomber not as air superiority fighter, so they are less capable compared to MKI in A2A combat. J-11B is home made Su-27 or superiority fighter, which is being further developed into Chinese variants of Su-35BM and Su-33, heavy air superiority fighter and ship borne multirole fighter, respectively. In the lighter class JH-7A fighter bomber has been inducted both to PLAN and PLAAF. The assignment of J-10 is leaned more to the role of homeland defense, i.e., as interceptor or air superiority fighter. Given the facts that both J-11B and J-10A share the same platform of radars and avionics. They should be called as Heavy/Light mix instead. J-10A has reportedly scored a better kill in A2A combat with Su-27s and Su-30MKKs in China.

The performance of J-10A/J-11B are not good enough for China to cope with a hostile environment with increasing number of highly advanced flankers, F-15s and appearance of F-35s. This is why China has recently slowed down J-10A/J-11B projects and committed with most of its resources to the program of developing a 4th G fighter, Jxx.

Before the decision on Jxx was made in the Summer of 2008, CAC was working on projects of developing two types of J-10 variants: one enlarged version with twin engines and one with stealth features. Now the stealth variant of J-10B continues to be developed in parallel with Jxx, on account of the need of a superiority fighter that is better than most of present foreign fighters for homeland defence. It will be inducted to fill the gap before the Jxx shows up.

The definition of J-10B might likely be based on use of Taihang engines, of which the one for J-10B (with the tube clusters and FADEC box installed on the down side of the engine compared with AL-31FN) is being displayed at Zhuhai Airshow 2008. J-10B may be served as a platform of fighters configured with either multirole or air superiority settings. According to some sources in China the "air supriority J-10B" to PLAAF will be a stealth variant with a small internal weapons bay. The doctrine behind the design is that the stealthier J-10B on sacrifice of payload would enable better performance, so to speak, as a fighter killer.

It's informative, thanks. Although I must say I haven't heard anything about J-XX for a long time.

I saw that Taihang engine somewhere else, looks very good!

Be my guest, Overseer. There have been several Jxx or xJ stories floating on internet forums. Those gossips perhaps reflected leaks on the pre-R&D models from several different institutes in China so they were not totally groundless. The timing of China's 4G fighter program was probably limited by the progress of indigenous engine development. There are at least two ongoing projects of engines for 4G fighters, a medium thrust engine and a high thrust engine, respectively.

The medium thrust 4G engine might be the mysterious 9500Kg thrust model displaying at the Zhuhai Airshow 2008. The engine is, according to some analysts, called modified Taishan (with TVC too) with which the engine core is partially influenced by RD33. Based on publication from Chinese aviation authority Taishan will be ready around 2020.

The R&D of high thrust engine was initiated latest in 2004. On the AVIC website an announcement of successful production of forging parts associated to the engine dated back in April 2004. In 2007 another report and a picture allowed identification of the engine code name, WS15, and the status of prototype development. WS-15 is allegedly based on a CJ2000 engine core developed at the 624 institute and estimated to have a TWR of 10.

Due to the success and progress of R&D of the high thrust engine it's reasonable that the authority decided to go for the heavy 4G fighter according to a CAC design. It has become more clearly that CAC and 611 institute have got the big part of the cake and another major fighter designing entity SAF or 601 institute is only responsible for the structure design. A reasonable estimation is that both the body part and the prototype engine would surface between 2011 and 2015, or 2012 according to a PLA general.

Since J-15 is believed to be the code for the naval J-11BJ the code number of Chinese 4G fighter has to be one among 16-20 (Jxx). I explained why Chinese won't use J-14 in another thread.

ZHUHAI, China

The most advanced Chinese fighter plane to date made its public debut at the biennial China Air Show here this week, and it was an impressive sight. The pilot wowed onlookers with a series of maneuvers reminiscent of "Top Gun," including sharp turns, a near-vertical climb and a 360-degree rotation. The plane, dubbed the J-10, is the centerpiece of Beijing's military aerospace program. The message is clear: China's military is arriving, and fast.

The biennial air show in this southern city is unique because it's the closest glimpse most people can get of China's secretive aerospace aspirations. Even then, it's an imperfect window. Some of the models displayed might be more aspirational than practical, and there's a strong likelihood the military holds back especially interesting material. U.S.-based defense analyst Richard D. Fisher likens the Zhuhai event to a "clear view through a key hole."

Still, it's instructive. More technology is on display this year than ever before. The J-10 -- China's answer to the F-16 -- is the star. The Pentagon notes the J-10's utility in "anti-access/area-denial," or keeping the enemy out of a particular patch of land, sea or air. Its body is modeled on Israel's Lavi fighter program of the 1980s (the similarities are obvious, though both sides deny it) and it has, for now at least, a Russian engine. The Chinese are developing their own Taihang turbofan engine for the J-10, and after more than a decade of trials, a model of the Taihang is also on display in Zhuhai this week.

I believe J10B or super J10 are reffered to the same block but J10B... having two variants and one with internal weapons bay sound much more futurisitc.
What is the point in pursuing one with lesser characterisitcs!
