If you have or haven't heard of the incident,here's how it went down in early June 1967 just before the six day war.
An unarmed US Navy intel ship,the Liberty was in international waters in the Red Sea,quietly sweeping the ether analysing radio traffic. On June 8 after 9 hours of Israeli air and naval surveillance they attacked it without warning killing 34 wounding over a 100 ,even strafing life boats!
Their screams for help were heeded by a Med based carrier which sent planes-which were recalled!
"The most disgusting part of the tale relates to how U.S. warplanes sent to the Liberty’s aid from an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean were called back by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara acting under orders from President Lyndon Baines Johnson, who declared that he would rather see the ship go to the bottom of the sea than embarrass his good friend Israel. Ironically, the first ship to reach the Liberty and offer assistance was from the Soviet Union, an offer that was declined."

In May 1968, the Israeli government paid US$3.32 million (equivalent to US$22.9 million in 2016) to the U.S. government in compensation to the families of the 34 men killed in the attack. In March 1969, Israel paid a further $3.57 million ($23.3 million in 2016) to the men who had been wounded. In December 1980, it agreed to pay $6 million ($17.4 million in 2016) as the final settlement for material damage to Liberty itself plus 13 years' interest.[8]

No,Shlomo,I had no idea! I honestly thought it was accidentally attacked in BROAD DAYLIGHT FOR OVER 2 HOURS by ships and planes cause in those days FSBs had neither data pods nor data links.
