Living longer isn't necessarily living better. Of course, with genetic engineering, people will soon live to hundreds if not thousands of years.

Italy is also part of the EU and NATO, and while by itself is inferior to China as pure economical (and military) might, as part of the wider alliance it is way ahead of China, for now or in the foreseeable future.
Besides, Italy by itself is in another age compared to China when it comes to quality of life..

1. China is no superpower and the EU is much less dense populated that China. Large parts of china can not be settled from humans.

2. Italy is the most beautiful nation in the world. There is a reason why dolce vita is famous and why all stars come italy. Clooney fore example married in venice today. We have the best food, the best women. And we males are called "italian stallion" for a reason Italy is the land of amore, style , luxury and beauty.

The EU and NATO mean nothing. They are not countries and therefore are not effective. China is part of the UN. Doesn't mean much.

Actually, China is 92% Han. China's minorities are dirt poor. Chinese Han population life expectancy is way higher than the national average, more like 80 years.

In the last 100 years, Italy had its own central bank and can print or manipulate the currency as it see fit. Now, Italy (the same problem with the other PIG countries) depends on Frankfurt and the ECB can't make a one size fits all decision for all the PIGs.

Here come the catch 22 for the EU. Does anybody remember what Saddam wanted to do shortly before he became the evil dictator? He wanted to trade Iraqi oil in Euro and other currencies. The Euro could have become a reserve currency and petroeuro, enabling us to have the same privilege as the US has right now.
