Italy agrees to include Bangladeshis in ‘Farm Workers Programme’

DHAKA, Oct 12, 2020 (BSS) – Italy has agreed to include Bangladeshi national as expatriate manpower in their Farm Workers Programme responding to a request from Bangladesh.

“Good news. At our request, Italian government has finally agreed to include Bangladesh in their Seasonal and Non-Seasonal Workers programme,” Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told newsmen in a what’s app message tonight.

He said Italian government withdrew this privilege as Bangladeshi farm workers, instead of returning home after each season, never return home (and) thus violated the conditions of this programme.

This year, the foreign minister said when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met her counterpart in Rome, she requested him to include Bangladesh in their Farm Workers Programme.

“The Italian government honouring her request, granted this opportunity to Bangladesh nationals”, Momen said.

Italy has finally included Bangladesh in their "seasonal and non-seasonal workers programme" responding to a request from Dhaka.

"The Italian government earlier withdrew this privilege as Bangladeshi farm workers violated conditions of this programme by not returning home after each season," Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told UNB on Monday.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested her Italian counterpart to include Bangladesh in their seasonal and non-seasonal workers porogramme when they met in Rome this year.

Honoouring her request, the Italian government granted this opportunity to Bangladeshi nationals, said the foreign minister. "It's a good news for Bangladesh," he said.

In reality, our people have more of a agriculture related experience than factory jobs. Italy has taken an appropriate decision. Italy is famous for its tomato and fruit cultivation. It exports billions of dollar worth of canned tomato throughout the world.

Personally speaking, I do not like the taste of Italian tomato that is produced in BD. I like the former type that I do not see in the markets any more during my visits.

BD is not a country to produce a huge quantity of tomato like Italy does. Its exports of canned tomato probably exceeds $4bn. It has this tradition and very famous companies are based there, like the following (Internet source):

Bd is trillion km behind Italy in the tomato field. It has no infrastructure to can foods.

This is on the surface - news of no significance to some, but the opposite is actually true. Bangladeshi farm workers, whether working for themselves, or for employers, have turned many a fallow landscape into green productive farmland.

Hitherto unknown places that were deemed totally unfit for farming, have been transformed.

Other than Italy and Greece, I can post videos for arid places in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Lebanon, Spain, Portugal, Kenya and of course US East/West coasts and European countries like Germany and the UK.

Indians live on doles in many western countries and we send our youth to work in agriculture and other sectors. They will work as well as learn while working.

Unlike India, we don't have enough land to generate work opportunities and agricultural jobs for our workforce of millions strong, so what do you want us to do ? Sit on our hands ?



Our people need to work, else they become a liability on our fledgling social safety net, which was only recently formed, what we can do is find them jobs abroad or atleast facilitate their travel abroad on job finders visas.



So of course, this is important news, Italy has reopened their country for our labour, which means less pressure on our system and remittances in the long term and of course a small fraction of these people will branch out into owning their own businesses or turning into entrepreneurs.



You have to look at these things objectively, dropping a half arsed comment is easy, but quite tasteless and doesn't add anything to the discussion.

No I get it. What I meant was HRD could train them better and send them for high skilled work. And don't celebrate this as an achievement. They just go there and be servant to others.

But good for Bangladesh in general. At least Bangladeshis are not known to cause trouble in other countries. You would be welcomed there.

@Protest_again, do not please criticize our people who were not born rich. They go abroad and many of them work in agriculture and learn. Name one country where Indians live on doles. Please don't make a fool of yourself. Even in Gulf, Indians land better jobs than Bangladeshis.

Indians do not like to do hard work. Getting dole is one way of their survival if so. ME has no dole. I was talking about west Europe. Send us a field survey report on types of jobs held by us and Indians in the ME.

However, you were ridiculing our people for going abroad to find jobs. Any job is just another job that feeds a worker and his family in his country.

Bengalis may be uneducated on average, but we have a bit of a genius when it comes to going rags to riches and opening business from the money pooled from low paying jobs.



We just manage our finances better than everyone else, some of us go on to invest it into profitable ventures.


Of course, some have leeches for family back home who milk them dry, that's the worst case scenario.

A few personal achievements inside and out of the country have little value. A country is developed when the entire population is developed, people have productive jobs, earn money and spend for their families, children's education, recreation and others. Living standard goes up this way and foreigners respect the country and its people. BD remains behind in this respect although some people claimed BD people are fond of drinking 300 Taka a cup of tea.

Many of our people in foreign countries start small businesses as we lack qualifications to be accepted other than menial jobs. We may speak the local language in its broken form, but are unable to read good stuffs in English and can write almost nothing.

I hope the next generation born and brought up in foreign countries learn some fruitful trades although I find here in Japan many parents want them to become ignorant Mullah, because this will guarantee the parents an easy entrance to Paradise. We all are still living in 10th Century world.
