ISLAMABAD: To reduce unemployment and improve economy, the business community on Friday demanded the government to focus on promoting Information Technology (IT) sector to capitalise on its potential.
They said the country was confronting serious problems of unemployment and poverty and only IT sector had the potential to over come some of the challenges.
President, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Zahid Maqbool, expressed these views during a meeting with a delegation of IT sector at chamber today.
The development of a modern economy is dependent on the IT sector as its usage could enhance the performance of every sector by improving business processes, cutting costs and increasing productivity. He said if Pakistan had to get its share in world market, promotion of IT was the best way to move fast in that direction.
The delegation said that IT industry in Pakistan had covered a long distance over the last two decades employing over half a million youngsters in different capacities ranging from software developers, hardware engineers, call centre operators and cable handlers.
They said the inadequate and outdated legal framework had been the main hindrance in proper growth of this sector.
By tapping full potential of IT, Pakistan could also grab a substantial share in the international IT market and enhance its exports as well. He said USA, Canada, Middle East, Malaysia, UK and other countries have outsourced many functions of their businesses to specialised firms as cost cutting measures and by providing cost-effective services, Pakistan can realise the potential of outsourcing as well.
He stressed upon the government to take measures for enhancing educational enrollment and particularly IT training capacity of the country to promote IT culture and improve the competitiveness of Pakistani products and exports.
