It is up to India to try to stop Sheikh Hasina ruining Bangladesh

If BNP leaning towards india then they should be thrown to wolves as well. Its time for people to take on national interest and alternative leadership. But there has been lots of Awami propaganda to give public false impression BNP. Truth is we don't know yet which way things will be moving. Making comments on Awami hyped propaganda report will not help anyone or any cause.

Well, begum zia has reputation of being aposhin netri when it comes to national interest. If she
wanted she counld have went along the lines set by the MUA-FUA dalals to come to power, but she didn't. I believe she is the one of the most patriotic leader of BD and most BNP alas are still very
much loyal to her.

Indo-Bangladeshi Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Peace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The article 4,5,8,9,10 clearly showed India's malicious intentions.

Article 4 practically eliminated Bangladesh's power to devise an independent foreign policy and made it compulsory for Bangladesh to consult India about any major foreign policy matter.

Article 5 forced Bangladesh to confer most favored nation status on India to clear the way for India to capture Bangladesh's economic market without any restrictions, but Bangladesh being a smaller economy was unable to avail itself of the opportunities of most favored nation status.

Article 8 ensured that if there was a military conflict between Bangladesh and India, Bangladesh, as a weaker power, could not seek help from outside world to protect its territorial integrity.

Article 9 was included to protect India's strategic interest in its insurgency infested North Eastern states by imposing restrictions on Bangladesh to provide help and support to the insurgents, but India itself broke the sanctity of this clause by providing military and political assistance to Shanti Bahini in Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Article 10 restricted Bangladesh's power to sign a defense deal with a third party to improve its armed forces.

• Article 4: Both the nations will hold regular meetings with each other at all levels to discuss major international issues for mutual benefit.

• Article 5: Both the nations will cooperate with each other in the fields of trade, transport and communications on the basis of equality, mutual benefit and the most favored nation principle.

• Article 8: None of the nations will ever enter into a military alliance against each other and will refrain from allowing a third party from using their soil for military purposes that could constitute a threat to national security of either nations.

• Article 9: Both the nations will refrain from providing any assistance to a third party taking part in an armed conflict against either of the nations to ensure regional peace and security.

• Article 10: Neither of the party will undertake any commitment, secret or open, toward one or more states, which may violate the spirit of the treaty.

Thus the entrapment of Bangladesh was complete.

Now dont tell me that by according MFN to India BD killed itself,Pak is also Giving India MFN status to help its own economy not to destroy its economy. Its all trade and cooperation. Bangladesh can get a lot of investments from india. Proposal by Tatas for investment was biggest FDI in the history of BD which died due to politics.

Anti-liberation forces, BNP bribed the Economist: Hanif

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS)

DHAKA, May 26 (BSS)-Academicians, intellectuals and leaders of the ruling Awami League today termed the two articles on the government and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina carried by the London-based Economist as untrue, unacceptable and contradictory to the ethics of objective journalism.

They were of the views that the articles were the conspiracies of the undemocratic forces and their beneficiaries.

In its Saturday's issue, the UK-based Economist carried two articles titled "Bangladesh's toxic politics: Hello, Delhi" and "Politics in Bangladesh: Banged about" in which it was also came up with an observation "The prime minister sets the country on a dangerous path".

Outright rejecting both the articles of the Economist, Awami eague joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said, "The British magazine (Economist) is used to write against Awami League taking bribes from anti-liberation forces and BNP."

He alleged that the newspaper (Economist) carried many reports with malafide intention soon after the present government assumed power.

Condemning the paper's comment "As Sheikh Hasina looks ever more strident, people may start tiptoeing away from her", Hanif referred to the recent survey of the United States' Gallop poll and said it showed 77 percent people of the country kept their trust on Sheikh Hasina.

About the paper's remarks on the caretaker government, he said the Sheikh Hasina government did not cancelled the caretaker system government, rather it was a verdict of the country's apex court and in accordance with the verdict, a bill in this regard was passed in the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament).

Protesting the comment "It is up to India try to stop Sheikh Hasina ruining Bangladesh", Hanif said, "Bangladesh is an independent and sovereign state. The people elect the country's Prime Minister. Involvement of any third country in its internal affairs is illogical and contradictory to its sovereignty."

Referring to a number of comments of Hillary Clinton and the United States Ambassador in Bangladesh as mentioned in the article, the AL joint secretary said during her recent visit to Dhaka, Hillary Clinton remarked that Bangladesh was gradually developing and the country's democracy has been more consolidated and it is in the right track of transforming into a middle-income state.

But, he regretted that nowhere in its articles, the paper did mention the aforesaid remarks of Hillary Clinton, which bore the testimony to the facts that the Economist wants deliberately to undermine the progress achieved by the present government.

Replying to the article's comment on detaining of 33 leaders of the opposition in jail in a case of arson and arrest of nearly
3,000 BNP leaders and activists, Hanif said, "The Economist
highlighted only on the negative matters."

He referred to the killing of thousands of Awami League leaders and workers including murder of a former minister and a few MPs and 24 party leaders and workers in the August 21 massacre in 2004 during the five-year rule of the BNP-led government.

In reality, Hanif was of the opinion that the Economist has taken the side of those who are opposing the trail of the war criminals and collaborators.

Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, said, "It's nothing but a well-conceived conspiracy of an undemocratic force of beneficiaries."

He said it's a part of a conspiracy being hatched at a time when Bangladesh under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is marching ahead in the community of nations upholding its nascent democracy.

Noted academician and historian Prof Dr Syed Anwar Hossain said, "The paper (Economist) has been writing against the present government for quite sometime, but the reason for it is unclear.
However, there is no good intention behind publishing such
articles is crystal clear."

Dr Badiul Alam Mazumdar, Secretary general of an NGO Sujon,
said, "It's a wake up call for the government. We are in a crisis
now, but nobody from outside can resolve our problems."

Before comming up with this argument you should have realized that that treaty was suppose to
be in force for 25 years from the day of being signed i.e the treaty officially expired in 1996.
After the political change of 1975 i.e when pres.ZIA came to power by popular sepahi-janata
revolt, BD decided to dump INDIA for good. Pres.ZIA dynamic foreign policy made US ,China and
our muslim brothers in the M.E recognize us. Everything you mentioned happened post-75 when
when India realized that BD is not some Buthan or Sikim.
After 75 indira started backing the
Shanti Bahini insurgency violating Article 9 of the treaty first, knowing full well that BD's political
leadership and intl Community wasn't seeing this slave 25 year treaty in good light. Post-75
BD dumping the treaty doesn't change
the fact that INDIA did indeed tried to make us a vassal by this treaty. You can't deny this, can
you?
Due to massive popular discontent, BAL didn't renew the treaty in 96. But now in 2008
the recent treaties signed with India are not presented in parliament as per the constitution. BAL and
India is playing hide and seek with people of BD. Why the secrecy if there is nothing to hide?

As for India backing Shanti Bahini, well India has been backing insurgency in the region since 47.
BD formation was also by insurgency, LTTE of SL for 30 years and now active insurgency in Baluchistan.
Plenty of proof is there to show indian terrorist activities in S.asia. Shanti Bahini caused havoc
in BD for 30 years before awami indian dalals in 97 decided to give the CHT some amount of autonomy violating the constitution and this was done at a time when the BD army was on its way to
crushing the insurgency permanently. Off course we hate india for always trying to make BD a
vassal via their puppet BAL.
Here's an article in NYT from 1989 talking about India's role in CHT insurgency.
Bangladeshi Insurgents Say India Is Supporting Them - NYTimes.com
And here's one of your own writer who wrote about Indian involvement in CHT:
India backed Shanti Bahini, Burmese rebels: book | Bangladesh | bdnews24.com
