Union Budget 2011: Poor to get subsidies in cash

NEW DELHI: People living below the poverty line will receive cash as subsidies and the process will start by March 2012, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in his general budget speech on Monday.

"The government will move towards direct cash transfer to people living below poverty line in a phased manner," Mukherjee said in his budget presented to the Lok Sabha.

A committee under Unique Identification Authority of India chairman Nandan Nilekani will be set up to design a mechanism that will allow millions of people to benefit from various subsidy schemes on foodgrain and fuel.

Huge leakages in various subsidy schemes like the public distribution scheme have led to the poor not benefiting much from various social welfare programmes of the federal government.

The finance minister said the system will be in place by March next year.

Nope.. both are different.. removing poverty is a long and painful process .. crores cant be spend on giving away as cash to make them instant rich, coz that would create chaos.

Thats why government announces projects on job assured schemes, give the maximum of subsidies in food and ration, initiate housing schemes , improve basic structures and needs., starts welfare programs, give free meals schemes, impliment free education, free government hospitals etc etc..

The technological missions and projects and poverty removal are 2 different areas and its not necessary to mingle both as each has its own fund allocated for it.

sorry guys.. but this chandrayaan mission is simply waste of money... we can use this fund for education and social development schemes.. we are not a rich nation to afford lavish spending like this... getting millions out of the poverty is better

you talking like some of those furstrated people from western world raising voice against india space agency as waste of money but they failed to realise that for every 1 rupee invested ,Isro gain 2 rupees as profit and 2 rupees gained is implemented to social development of country .... So chill

A recipe for disaster which makes lazy bums more lazier. These good for nothing suckers(i meant it) will use that cash on gambling and liquor. These schemes cannot provide sustainable improvement in quality of poor and are only helpful in getting votes.

Not to forget the thousands of jobs that are associated with the various branches of ISRO that is spanning all across the nation.

Anyway he is specifically asking about chandrayan and its benefits.

The Benefits Of Chandrayaan-1 Mission
By devenix

ISRO expressed that Chandrayaan-1 is not an expensive mission and in fact this moon odyssey will help the nation to update the technological expertise in order to explore the outer space and finally setting up a base on the earth’s natural satellite.

S Satish, ISRO spokesperson, while contradicting the critics, who wanted an answer behind the need to spend money for a mission to explore the moon, when many other countries have already done it, said, “Moon mission cost is less than Rs 400 crore, which is just ten per cent of annual budget of ISRO spread over many years.”

The cost of Chandrayaan-1 which has been scheduled to be launched on 22nd October is nearly Rs 386 crore, which includes Rs 100 crore for the establishment of Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) at Byalalu. This will help to perform the task of getting the radio signals transmitted by future satellites, not just Chandrayaan-1. This mission is also India’s first unmanned lunar mission. The officials of ISRO feel that those who are against this mission are actually not fully aware with the facts related to the mission.

Satish clarified, “For example, previous moon missions have been undertaken by individual countries and it’s no secret that expertise of that nature is not shared. So, India had to do it by itself lest it would lose out in the race for the Moon.”

This mission will also help ISRO to better its technological expertise to a great level.

An ISRO official said, “There is also the pride factor. With China forging ahead in the space field, India cannot lag behind and miss the bus. Moreover, some kind of colonization of Moon cannot be ruled out in the coming decades. We have to have our presence.”

the balance should be maintain between social schemes and technological mission but what should be the priority and the weightage should be given to both ?? the social schemes are placed for so long.. but results are not satisfactory enough .. we donot even have resources to satisfy the basic need of our huge population then why we are aiming so big? i do not give a damm when indian satellites revolve around moon and found out the caves and water but our herat bleeds when millions of children dry because of malnutrition . Inclusive growth should be the aim.

If 1/3 rd of the people gets its benefits that would be a huge boost for our country. lets be positive on everything.

I am not frustrated but its a simply waste of money... how does it make to invest on moon?? when we are one of the highest aid receiver in the world . this is shameful every single penny should be use in more meaningful way

While I don't agree with your strong wording, but yes these are just populist measures. Not gonna help much. To reduce poverty we need to
1. Boost manufacturing
2. Reform the agricultural sector

Results are not satisfactory is not because of budget allocations.. Each year out the crores and crores of money allocated a major chunk left with the state and central government get left as unspend.

The problem is we still havent reached all the masses effectively. But times are changing and the focus is now on rural with a very "surprising budget" which actually took care of a few issues like starting from the basics, example agriculture.

With the nearly completing census , we would get a better picture of what has been done since the last one and the improvements. This time the ones without homes and the ones which are not usually counted are being counted. Lets keep the hope alive.

If the project is success, there wont be any wastage. Its the curiosity and scientific inquiry of the mankind which resulted in these enormous discoveries and inventions which helped us stand where we are now. These kind of projects also help in boosting morale and gives lots of encouragement to young minds to get proper education which makes them to stand on there own rather than depending on govt handouts.

India is suffering from chronic poverty and there is no magic stick around to uplift those people .. ISRO IS MORE LIKE BUISNESS ENTITY UNLIKE NASA,money generated by launching different country satellites is used to uplift poverty ...

india needs to keep its misplaced priorities right... we have huge fiscal deficit because of populist measures and ultimately they do not do anything to poor people and ultimately because of populist measures they have to feel the brunt of deficit..
