Israel is not a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and thus does not have the legal obligation of "junior" signatories not to develop nuclear weapons.

At the time Israel began development of nuclear technology (in the 1950s, I think) it was surrounded by enemies who vowed to wipe out not just its sovereignty, but its Jewish population as well. The situation has only improved slightly, I think.

Why should Israel be sanctioned? In any case, Israel does not admit to having nuclear weapons.

According to that logic USA having nukes is a threat to the entire world since it is the Only country to have used Atomic bombs. Russia, UK, etc are all threats to their parts of the region. But that is irrelevant. Point is, Indian nukes spurred Pakistan to acquire nukes as well. American nukes lead to Russian nukes. Its a long chain reaction.

It is simple logic, when a powerful country in the neighborhood acquires/has nukes, others nearby with the capability are bound to go for it too. Question is, when will Iran get her nukes? All that bullcrap about Israeli nukes for last resort means nothing. In international politics, you trust no one with the security of your country. A country within my reach has nukes, it will be foolish for me to trust her words, "oh no don't worry, my nukes are just for self defence. No harm intended to you." It is a blessing in disguise for Iran since now it has become her right to acquire nukes for ensuring her safety. I think we should thank Israel for that.

First of all, the Arab armies could Never defeat Israel in conventional warfare. It has been proven time and again. USA has always made sure that Israel retains the qualitative edge with superior technology. And I'm sure you already know, in modern warfare numbers really count for nothing.

About the enemies being out of reach of Israeli land forces, that means they can't reach Israel either. Since their air force is so pathetic compared to Israel and they don't have nukes to unleash at Israel, I don't see how they can be a headache for Israel.

However, I accept your point of nukes being a deterrent for Israel. Although I believe it was quite unnecessary. At the same time, it is also a cause of concern for her neighbors which may very well lead to a nuclear arms race. If and when they acquire the capability and get the courage to stand up to US bullying.

Israel defeated a whole bunch of Arab armies in six days. Along with three victories in a row.

The performance of Saddam's forces was pathetic on all fronts, both in the Iraq-Iran war and the Gulf war.

Iraq was obliterated for it's alleged WMDs (which of-course weren't there). We can imagine just how paranoid some powerful people in the US really are.

Israel as a country has the right to defend itself and just as Pakistan used various sources to make nukes Israel did it too, so why to start a debate on such an issue, obviously when a smaller country is surrounded by hostile neighbors, just as we face Indian threat on the east, it would look for some non conventional weapon to balance the power in the region.

After all both of us face similar threats, Indian extremists don't recognize our existence while the countries that threaten Israel don't recognize it.
