Peace Now: 34 percent increase in illegal settlement construction over 2016

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Settlement watchdog Peace Now released a report on Sunday, revealing a 34 percent increase in illegal Israeli settlement construction over 2016, with Israeli settlers breaking ground on 1,814 new housing units, compared to 1,350 new construction starts in 2015.

“Construction was largely focused in isolated settlements and in areas that are highly problematic in terms of a two-state solution,” the NGO said, highlighting that nearly 70 percent (1,263 housing units) of the new housing were in areas that lie beyond the proposed 1967 "Green Line" border in the occupied West Bank.

While all settlement construction is considered illegal under international law, at least 10 percent (183 housing units) of the construction starts took place in sites considered illegal according to Israeli law, the group said, referring to illegal settlement outposts.

“While in recent years, most of the construction in outposts was done by individuals who initiated the construction of their own houses, in 2016 we saw more organized construction projects in outposts, with massive infrastructure works which requires funding and investment,” Peace Now said, highlighting that “such investment must require the active, or at least passive, involvement of the authorities, and the settlement municipal councils in particular.”

In total, illegal outposts saw 114 construction starts, 62 of which were for permanent structures and 52 for mobile homes, according to the NGO.

While the Israeli government typically maintains that the Israeli settlers erecting the outposts act independently from government policy, the outposts tend to be strategic in their location in the West Bank and often times serve as corridors between existing official settlements in order to create facts on the ground and more easily expand the settlements in the future.

The controversial Regularization law that passed through Israeli parliament in February could grant official Israeli governmental recognition to more than a dozen illegal settlement outposts in the West Bank established on private Palestinian lands, provided that they can prove they were built “in good faith” -- without knowledge that the land upon which it was built was privately owned by Palestinians.

Rights group demands Israel cancel tenders opened in illegal West Bank settlements

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli authorities have been offering land tenders inside Israeli settlements, which are considered illegal under international law, in the occupied West Bank, according to Adalah – The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel.

According to Adalah, during 2016 and 2017 the Israel Land Authority (ILA) opened tenders offering “state lands” for available plots in at least seven West Bank settlements, including the Givat Zeev, Maale Adumim, Alfei Menashe, Ariel, Beitar Illit, Karnei Shomron, and Oranit settlements.

Adalah sent a letter to senior Israeli officials on Tuesday, demanding that the open tenders be canceled, as “the Israeli agency responsible for issuing these tenders has no legal authority in the 1967 Occupied Territories,” referring to the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which were illegally occupied by Israel following the six-day war in 1967.

In the letter, attorney Suhad Bishara, director of Adalah's Land and Planning Rights Unit, wrote "the territories included in these tenders are being managed as if they are part of the State of Israel to which Israeli state law applies. This practice – for all intents and purposes – therefore annexes these territories to the State of Israel."

“Adalah emphasizes that this practice is a violation of international law, which determines that any long-term changes imposed upon occupied territories must be in the interests of the local protected civilian population. International law also forbids the occupying power from exploiting occupied territories for its general use,” the letter concluded.

An ILA spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

Britain's Labour Party will 'immediately' recognize Palestine if elected in June

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Britain’s Labour party announced in its 2017 elections manifesto that if elected in June, the party would immediately recognize the state of Palestine.

The manifesto stated that the party was committed to a two-state solution to solve the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict, adding that “there can be no military solution to this conflict” and that both Israel and Palestine must “avoid taking action that would make peace harder to achieve,” referencing the need to end the decade-long Israeli siege, the half-century Israeli occupation of the West Bank, and Israel’s continued settlement expansions.

It added that Hamas, the de facto leaders in the besieged Gaza Strip, must also end rocket and “terror attacks,” in order for leaders to enter “meaningful negotiations” and develop a “diplomatic resolution.”

“A Labour government will immediately recognize the state of Palestine,” the manifesto added.

Earlier this month, the United Kingdom’s House of Lords released a statement that strongly criticized the British government’s “very degrading, dismissive attitude” towards international efforts to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and suggested that it take a stronger stance to advance a two-state solution, including recognizing a state of Palestine.

Slamming US President Donald Trump’s policy-making as "mercurial and unpredictable," the report called for a more engaged British political stance in the Middle East, including vis-a-vis Israel and Palestine.

Palestinian students demonstrate across West Bank to 'send message to the world'

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- The Palestinian Ministry of Education launched a “Carnival of Freedom” on Tuesday across the occupied West Bank when Palestinian students hold national sit-ins to commemorate historical moments of Israel’s colonization and occupation of Palestine and to “send a message to the world.”

Thousands of students across the West Bank took part in the demonstrations, and held signs demanding an end to the Israeli occupation and the recognition of Palestinian human rights, while Palestinian cultural and heritage events were also held at the sit-ins.

Head of student activities at the ministry Sadeq al-Khdour said that the events, which were organized in cooperation with the Higher Council of Youth and Sports, were focused on commemorating the 100th year since the signing of the Balfour Declaration, the 69th anniversary of Nakba, the 50 year anniversary of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza (referred to as ‘Naksa’), and 30 years since the first Palestinian intifada.

Al-Khdour added that the sit-ins were also aimed at sending a message to the world that “it is time to end the occupation and for Palestine to gain its freedom,” adding that the demonstrations were also centered on pressuring the international community to uphold its responsibilities towards the Palestinians.

In Hebron, students and officials from various governmental and non-governmental departments participated in the activities, which were held at the al-Hussein school. Students raised Palestinian flags and repeated slogans demanding Palestinian independence and an end to the Israeli occupation.

Kamel Hmeid, the governor of Hebron, told Ma’an that “this is a popular, peaceful sit-in under the Palestinian flag calling for freedom,” and added that Palestinians would continue to fight for an independent state with occupied East Jerusalem as its capital.

#Occupationis: Palestinians launch campaign on 50th year of Israeli occupation

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- A team of Palestinian diplomats have launched a social media campaign under the hashtag #Occupationis (الاحتلال_هو#) to raise awareness on the realities of Israel’s ongoing occupation of the Palestinian territory, ahead of the 50th anniversary of the occupation on Monday, which Palestinians refer to as “Naksa” day, meaning setback.

A statement released by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on Saturday said that the campaign was launched by the Palestinian Task Force on Public Diplomacy in commemoration of the anniversary of the 1967 Israeli invasion and occupation of Palestinian land -- the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip -- that began on June 5, when Israel also invaded and occupied the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights.

According to the statement, the campaign aims to show “the human face of the Palestinian people and a series of narratives encapsulating the impact of the occupation on individual lives,” adding that the organizers also hope to “celebrate the Palestinian spirit of endurance and resilience.”

“We call on each and every person (regardless of nationality) who has experienced the occupation in any way to share his or her personal story by issuing a video, post, or picture on social media under the hashtags: #Occupationis or الاحتلال_هو#,” the statement continued.

The organizers told Ma’an that the campaign is aimed at humanizing the Israeli occupation through the sharing of individual stories to help others understand the Palestinian experience under occupation.

'Death to Arabs' sprayed on Palestinian vehicles in occupied East Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Suspected Israeli extremists vandalized a number of Palestinian-owned vehicles in occupied East Jerusalem overnight night Sunday, an Israeli police spokesperson reported, with at least one car being painted with the message "Death to Arabs" in Hebrew.

Luba al-Samri said in a written statement in Arabic that Israeli police were notified early Monday morning about cars being punctured and spray-painted with anti-Palestinian slogans. She said that the cars were parked in the "French Hill neighborhood," an illegal Israeli settlement, as well as the nearby "Hotels area" on Bar Lev street in northeastern Jerusalem.

According to reports in Hebrew-language media, the Palestinian owners of the vehicles had reported the incident to police.

Last month, racist and Islamophobic graffiti was sprayed on 17 vehicles in the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Shufat, with some of the messages saying "(Prophet) Muhammad is a pig" in Hebrew.

More recently, suspected Israeli extremists set fire to two vehicles and sprayed “price tag” graffiti on a building in the Palestinian town of Ara in northern Israel.

Why do these cowardly Israeli extremists spray paint 'death to Palestinians' rather than 'Arabs' all the time? That is because they try denying our identity as the Palestinian people and attempt to portray as some alien Arab peoples that came from nowhere. Their hatred lies very deep.
