The Israeli spacecraft Beresheet, which was launched off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, two weeks ago on its way to a planned Moon landing next month, took its first selfie in space. The selfie - which was taken some 37,600 km (20,000 miles) away from Earth - shows the Southern Hemisphere, and Australia can clearly be seen in the background.

The image was taken as the spacecraft slowly orbits the Earth for the next month or so, before it will be pulled by the gravitational force of the Moon and the landing process will begin. Beresheet is scheduled to land on the Moon on April 11.

In the image, a plaque that was installed at the front of the spacecraft is seen, featuring the Israeli flag and the message "Am Yisrael Chai" (lit. Long live the Nation of Israel). An additional inscription also reads "Small country big dreams," a reference to the founder of modern Zionism Theodore Herzl who was noted for his famous quote, "If you will it, it is no dream."
"The selfie of the spacecraft is proof of the technological power of Israel," said the Israeli Minister of Science and Technology Ofir Akunis. "Despite the small size of the spacecraft Beresheet, it brings us great joy. The spacecraft is proof of the technological strength and power of Israel, and its success passes on an educational message as well to the children of Israel: You need to dream big," he said.

"I am proud of the decision of the Science and Technology Ministry to be a partner in this project," Akunis said.

as I aid its a vain spacecraft ,and the photo the spacecraft is supposed to send from moon is the proof of technological strength not a selfie it send from itself.

Israel? A space superpower? Indeed.

But now, Israel is about to launch an unmanned spacecraft to the moon, thus joining the three superpowers – the US, Russia and China – that have done already done so.

The trip is scheduled to last seven weeks, with the Beresheet due to touch down on April 11.

Beware SpaceIL, remember the Tortoise and Hare? North Korea could launch during the week of Monday, April 15, 2019, on the occasion of the Day Of The Sun its first ever astronaut into a suborbital spaceflight!

Meaning that Kim Jong Un's Korea would be the next space power to join the three superpowers!

Activity was recently spotted at North Korea’s Sanumdong research facility, associated with the country’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) program, revealed Suh Hoon, the director of the South’s National Intelligence Service (NIS).

The JoongAng Ilbo reported Thursday that Suh told lawmakers following a closed-door meeting at the National Assembly Tuesday that vehicles transporting supplies were spotted at the Sanumdong facility and “were seen as missile-related activities.”

Sanumdong, on the outskirts of Pyongyang, is a key military site where at least two Hwasong-15 ICBMs, which could potentially reach the U.S. mainland, were manufactured.

No need to precise that a Hwasong-15 derived SLV could sent an astronaut into a 20 minutes suborbital flight, from a TEL and any airfield, without the need of any suppoting space center.

BERESHEET COMPLETES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL MANEUVER EN ROUTE TO MOON
SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries engineers completed the maneuver at 3:11 p.m. local time.
BY JERUSALEM POST STAFF

MARCH 7, 2019 18:28

Beresheet, the first Israeli spacecraft, currently on course to the Moon, completed another successful maneuver on Thursday.

SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries engineers completed the maneuver at 3:11 p.m. local time, according to a press release.

"The maneuver was complicated, due to the need to deal with the constraints of the star trackers, but was carried out according to plan," read the statement. "During the maneuver, Beresheet's main engine was activated for 152 seconds. The next maneuver is planned in another two weeks."

Beresheet launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida in late February and is scheduled to land on the moon in mid-April.
On Tuesday, the craft sent home a selfie from 20,000 miles away.

The spacecraft Beresheet is scheduled to land on the surface of the Moon on April 11th.

Beresheet, built by Israeli non-profit SpaceIL, is the first private Moon mission
LI-03-Israeli-Moon-Lander-620x432.png

Beresheet, the world’s first private mission to the moon, is well on its way to success.

“Today at 3:11 p.m. (Israel time), a maneuver of the Beresheet spacecraft was successfully carried out by the ground team of SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries. The Beresheet spacecraft is on its way towards an elliptical orbit, which has a maximum distance of 270,000 kilometers (167,770 miles) from the Earth.”

“The maneuver was complicated due to the need to deal with the constraints of the star trackers, but was successfully carried out according to plan. During the maneuver Beresheet’s main engine was activated for 152 seconds.”

“The next maneuver is planned to take place in roughly two weeks.”

Beresheet will be captured into lunar orbit on April 4,
then drop softly onto the moon’s surface on April 11. Stay tuned for a fun update!

Maybe all involved in the Israeli project are trying their utmost to preserve their Jewish/Israeli culture and that that culture is capable of producing the technological successes you are applauding.
Humanity as a whole is capable of producing technological successes that we all applaud; and it is not restricted to a set of people / culture. It is a trait of being "human". I'm a firm believer in "Humanity" and decry nationalistic tendencies which I have my own utopian "opinions" about.
All of this should not detract from the misery and suffering humans inflict on each other.

Yes, you are self-aware enough to label your opinions "utopian", a term coined by Sir Thomas More meaning "no place". That is, there is no place where humans have constructed an ethically perfect society. Of course the root cause that there is no such place is human nature. In my own thinking I typically consider Dante's seven deadly sins as encapsulating the aspects of human nature which prevent utopia: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth.

Individual humans and human cultures (societies) exhibit these sins in varying mixtures of intensity, but all have them. Many religious teachers, and political philosophers, have attempted to design structures and rules of living that counteract the affects of these inherent sins. Some of these constructs of culture are closer to "utopia" than others. I believe the mixture of Christianity and representative, constitutional democracy is the most successful combination in view today.

The first Israeli lunar spacecraft Beresheet (Hebrew for Genesis) was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 3:45 a.m. (Israel time) on Friday (8:45 p.m. Thursday EST), aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The first stage entry burn completed uneventfully less than three minutes after lift-off. At 4:23 am, 38 minutes after takeoff, Beresheet successfully detached from the Falcon 9 rocket, in the first test of its ability to function under its own power. Initial data was then received from the spacecraft and the landing legs deployed soon after, at 4:25.

The spacecraft will orbit the Earth in elliptical orbits and will travel 6.5 million kilometers – the longest distance ever traveled to the moon. During these orbits, the spacecraft will raise its orbit around Earth until it reaches the proximity of the moon. When the spacecraft is in lunar orbit, about ten days before landing, it will orbit it until the appropriate time and an autonomous landing process will begin. The route will take about two months until the expected landing on April 11, 2019.

The spacecraft, which weighs only 600 kilograms, is considered the smallest to land on the moon. The height of Beresheet is 1.5 meters, it is about two meters wide and it carries fuel which is approximately 75 percent of its weight. Its maximum speed will reach 10 km per second (36,000 km/h).

Hundreds of people gathered at IAI’s facility in Yehud to watch a live feed of the launch from Florida. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who also arrived at the control room, referred to the initiative as “a great step for Israel, and a huge step for Israel’s technology.” The prime minister called Israel a “small but huge country” noting that despite its smaller land mass and population compared to the other participating nations, Israel is a “giant in initiative, huge in achievements.”

President Reuven Rivlin also lauded the launch. “Mazal Tov, the State of Israel, you have a spacecraft. If Beresheet travels on the difficult path and lands on the Moon, Israel will be the fourth country to land a spacecraft on the Moon. It used to be imaginary, but now it's reality. A tremendous step for the state. A first-rate scientific, technological and educational project.”

The $100 million (NIS 370 million) spacecraft is a joint venture between private companies SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries, funded almost entirely by private donations, primarily by Morris Kahn. If the project is successful, Israel will become the fourth country to land a spacecraft on the moon.

“The successful launch positions Israel on the map,” said Morris Kahn, President of SpaceIL. “History has been made. We look forward to an amazing seven-week journey that will mark yet another historic event. We cross our fingers for Beresheet. Thank you to the amazing teams if SpaceIL and IAI.”

Ido Antebi, CEO of the SpaceIL NGO: “We arrived at the launch with a fully tested spacecraft on its way for a highly challenging mission. I am proud of SpaceIL and IAI teams who made this accomplishment possible with professional work, perseverance and collaboration, if everything goes well, the spacecraft will enter a cruising orbit around Earth within an hour from the launch. In the next two months, Beresheet will continue its challenging journey until it lands on the moon.”

Once landed on the moon, the spacecraft carrying the Israeli flag will begin taking photographs of the landing site and a “selfie” to prove it has indeed landed on the moon. The spacecraft has an important scientific mission to complete: measure the moon’s magnetic field as part of an experiment carried out in collaboration with the Weizmann Institute.

NASA is also participating in the mission under an agreement entered with Israel Space Agency. NASA has installed a laser retroreflector on the spacecraft and will assist in communicating the spacecraft on the moon.

The spacecraft also carries a "time capsule" – a huge database of hundreds of digital files ranging from details about SpaceIL, the spacecraft and the crew of the project, national symbols, cultural items and materials collected from the general public over the years to be placed on the moon by the spacecraft. Since the spacecraft is not expected to return to Earth, the information it carries is destined to remain on the moon for an indefinite period and may be found and distributed by future generations.

There was an engine failure for several seconds. When it restarted again it was already too late.
