Israeli president Shimon Peres congratulates Pakistan's Musharraf on win

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli President Shimon Peres sent a letter congratulating Gen. Pervez Musharraf on his victory in Pakistan's presidential election, Peres' office said Monday, offering a surprising gesture of support for a military ruler whose government has no formal relations with the Jewish state.
«Although we do not have formal relations, I would like
to convey my best wishes on your election as president of Pakistan for a second term,» Peres wrote.
«You have shown responsibility and strength in preventing the spread of violence and terrorism on many occasions and I carry in my heart your support for peace in the Middle East which I heard directly from you,» he said.
Pakistan _ a Muslim country and key ally in the U.S.-led war against terrorism _ has no diplomatic ties with Israel, and the letter did not say when the two men had spoken.
Musharraf was overwhelmingly re-elected in Sunday's election. But much of the opposition boycotted the vote, and the country's Supreme Court must decide whether to confirm the result or disqualify Musharraf due to his retention of his powerful role as army chief.

Despite the legal battle and lack of formal ties with Pakistan, Peres «thought it would be appropriate» to send a congratulatory letter to Musharraf, said Peres' spokeswoman, Ayelet Frisch. She described Musharraf as a «good friend» of the president. «Believe me, (the president) knows what he is doing,» she said.
In April, Musharraf made a surprise offer to help resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in an interview with the pan-Arab satellite television station Al-Arabiya. He told the Dubai-based station he would be willing to visit the Jewish state in order to help bring peace to the troubled Middle East.
Pakistan has not yet been involved in any negotiations concerning the Arab region, but hosted talks in late February in Islamabad, attended by Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, on issues ranging from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the war in Iraq and the standoff with Iran.

Developing relations isnt a bad move at all since it can help achieve the two countries get inolved in a direct dialouge process which inturn can help peace prevail in the middle east. But a watch ful eye is needed when we talk about Israel and Pakistan relationship. We know how close Israel is with India and what support the Israel is giving to India to suppress the kashmiri freedom movement. Besides for now indian embassy in pakistan to more then enough for her anti pakistan objectives, we dont need another one in the name of Israel. So a very watchful and carefull steps should be involved in issues like these specially not to forget SA.

i think this was a good thing. did you see what heeratz said about this that pakistan is one of the most influential muslim nations in the world and that it was a dick move on the part of the isrealis to turn musharraf down.

"We fail to notice that our detractors and enemies do not care whether we are true Muslims or not. To them we are all Muslims, followers of a religion and a Prophet [who] they declare promotes terrorism, and we are all their sworn enemies," declared Mahathir. "They will attack and kill us, invade our lands, bring down our governments whether we are Sunnis or [Shi'ites], Alawait or Druze or whatever. And we aid and abet them by attacking and weakening each other, and sometimes by doing their bidding, acting as their proxies to attack fellow Muslims. We try to bring down our governments through violence, succeeding to weaken and impoverish our countries."

This is what Mahatir had said.

And he is surely wrong!

He is myopic and it is the archetypical reaction.

It is good of the Israelis to build bridges!

Self pity does not a great nation, race or people make!

Asim,

I,as an Indian, would put my money on Musharraf. He is the last hope for peace with Paksitan!

Even Maj Jaswant Singh, the ex FM did, Vajpayee did and so did Advani and the last came a cropper because of the detestable RSS!

BJP (much that you all hate them) did more for amity than others.

I don't vote, but I want peace and I want progress. Vajpayee paved the way! And the present govt is losing the thread! So sad!

I want peace with Pakistan and anyone who can give that irrespective of their domestic agenda is OK by me, hopefully their domestic agenda is secular and peaceful!

If Simon Peres can do it, so can we!

We would then shaking hands that provided our one and only enemy with MKI-avionics, radars, UAV's, WVR and BVR ad so on... It would be the same nation that destroyed nuclear facility in Irac. Is willing to destroy Iran with nukes. Did just attack Syria. And has been terrorizing palestinians for decades. We offered them peace but Olmert said he did not need negotiators... Isreali's are never going to start the deal without a big win for them.

Munir,

Are they affecting Pakistan?

Worry about Pakistan and not the world!

Once Pakistan is on the go, then worry about others!

There are no permanent friends or enemies, there is only permanent interests!

Do you think the Palestinian or Arabs care for Paksitan except for soothing words?

Wake up and smell the coffee!

Salaams,

I don't know...I think its a scheme...

As Asim said earlier... Pakistan is one of the most influential Muslim nations.

Basically I think the real motive is that since Pakistan is a "Nuclear Declared" Nation, if he can create Diplomatic realtions with us...then if the day ever comes (WHICH I HIGHLY DOUBT)...when U.S. stops supporting them financially or millitarily... then they won't have a Nuclear nation supporting the Arab countries. In other words the Arab countries won't stand a chance.

But like...If Israel has Nuclear weapons why, hasn't it declared so...

Like isn't that Illegal. Isn't that aganist the UN or Geneva Convention.

My other speculation is that like they have done with Turkey... they will try to set up Diplomatic relations with muslims countries one by one, so that if there is ever a cry for help...those muslim countries won't come...

Currently Muslim countries with relations with Israel are Turkey & Kazakhtan ( I think)

I read it up soome where that Nazayerbev Narsultan visited Israel in 1995.

Like seriously...so disappointed with those countries...

.
first of all, Turkey is a secular country and why he cares about muslim countries who cannot see eye to eye with US or Israel (except iran). the fact is that most of muslim countries have US-Blessed dictators who just care about their empire and for that, they alwayz beg US to save them.

Well Russia provided India with the MKI's themselves but we still have relations with them. Why can't we have relations with the country that merely supplied the avionics?

Who gives a crap about Iraq? or Syria? They are not our problem.

And do you really think Musharraf could have magically solved a centuries old dispute by himself?

There is nothing but benefit in intiating a relationship with Israel. We too can benefit from their impressive defense products; like India is considering US weapons systems. If Jordan and Egypt, two countries that attacked the country on it's first day of existance can recognize it, why can't we?

Israel is a country and it's not going anywhere. It's going to stay on the map forever whether you like it or not. How long will the Pakistani passport continue to say "valid for every country of the world except Israel" ?

India,USA and Israel....... the trio of terrorist nations all love mushy for his anti pakistan policys that are leading pakistan towards fragmentation.

It is beneficial for the mean time. The policy can always change when your independent and thriving, at the sametime some of those guys need you.

One wonders why one should be ecstatic that Israeli President has congratulated Musharraf.

It is essential that any decent President should congratulate another for any success the other one has achieved.

I am sure Bush also congratulated Musharraf, but there is no similar jubilation.

Right now, everything is on Bush since BB is making inroads and that is not a comfortable situation. Bush also can iron out the dangers since I read in some posts that BB is pro US.

No matter what happens, Israel will not change its stance on Palestine. The US is trying, but it has not succeeded.
