Israel to have final tier of multilayered ballistic missile defence in place by 2017

Israel's Arrow 3 ballistic missile defence system is "very close" to being operational, a senior Israel Air Force (IAF) officer said on 25 February.
The successful Arrow 3 interception test carried out in December 2015 has brought forward the system's initial operating capability date, which is now expected before the end of 2016, the source said.
The operationalisation of Arrow 3, which is designed to intercept ballistic missiles when they are still outside the Earth's atmosphere, will complete Israel's multilayered missile defences. Arrow-2 is already in service and David's Sling, which is designed to intercept shorter-range ballistic missiles and heavy rockets, is in the process of being integrated into the network.
"We are in the midst of this process to set it up," the source said. "There is a team in charge of receiving David's Sling and in the coming months it will crystallise into an operational unit."
Shorter-range rockets are handled by the Iron Dome system. The source said more Iron Dome batteries have been upgraded. Although he declined to say how they have been improved, he hinted that the system's interception range has been significantly extended over the past two years.
The IAF now has more Iron Dome batteries, although the source declined to reveal how many are now operational.
The command-and-control systems for the Arrow, David's Sling, and Iron Dome systems have all been linked to a simulator, along with three US air defence systems, for the 'Juniper Cobra 2016' joint missile defence exercise that is currently under way in Israel.
The US has linked its Aegis, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), and Patriot systems to the simulator for the bi-annual drill, the IAF source said.
