Israel sends official apology to Turkey over ambassador row

Tel Aviv has officially apologized to Ankara for publicly humiliating Turkey's ambassador in front of local television stations, Turkish news agencies reported on Wednesday.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a statement denouncing Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had accused Israel of "excessive use of force and destabilizing the situation in the region," and the Valley of the Wolves television series, which depicts Israeli soldiers as baby-snatchers.

Ambassador Ahmet Oguz Celikkol was summoned on Monday by Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon to receive Israel's protest.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul warned earlier that if an official apology from Israel was not received by Wednesday evening, Turkey's ambassador would be recalled.

Ankara diplomats say they are satisfied with the official apology.

Celikkol was seated on a low sofa while Ayalon and two colleagues sat on higher chairs, and only the Israeli flag was on the table between them. "It is important to show that he [Celikkol] is low and we are high and there is only one flag," Israeli and Turkish media quoted Ayalon as instructing journalists covering the meeting on Monday.

Turkey issued its own statement criticizing Israel for what it described as a "demonstrative humiliation" of its ambassador.

Israel and Turkey are military and political partners, but their relations have been strained since Israel's military operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip a year ago. Erdogan then stormed out from the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos, accusing a moderator of giving more time to Israeli President Shimon Peres as the two had a heated debate over Israel's actions in Gaza.

In October, Turkey canceled the Anatolian Eagle international military exercises, in which Israeli warplanes were to take part, because of the Turkish people's "negative public reaction."

To be honest i havent ever seen such a silly thing before in my life. What kind of a diplomacy(?) is this? Most of the people think that Israel is strong, israeli people are very clever and so on... Look at this event please. The strong Israel satisfy himself with such a manner, such a behaviour. with such a simple thing
one thing is certain. Turkey is cooperating with middle east countries and this disturbs israeli eagles too much. i wonder what they will do next time... Will they beat our ambassador? will they make him sit on the floor?
But our ambassador's mistake is huge... He had to represent us as best as possible. and he failed. i think he should be replaced with someone else. Nevertheless with someone who can speak hebrew...

I have to disagree... I don't think this is the Turkish Ambassador's fault. This incident just exposes the brazen attitude and lack of culture, sophistication - and even basic decency - in those who are in power in Israel. I really blew a fuse when I read about this and have put down my thoughts here:

TechLahore; i agree that they act tactless, rude and they lack of culture.
But there is one thing. As a Turk, i wouldnt wait for the meeting for hours. But the ambassador waited for hours. he wanted to shake the israeli diplomat's hand, but he refused to give his hand... and our ambassador was looking at his face with a nice smile while israeli diplomat was acting before the cameras... is such a thing acceptable?
Turkey is not an empire but we live with the legacy of Ottoman. A Turkish ambassador cant be humiliated like this. We protected jews, provided shelter against inquisition. and israeli diplomat insults us...
They are losing power, they cant read the direction of the world and events. Power of Turkey is expanding. we returned middle east after a century. And while we rise, israel will lose. They know this but they cant admit it. Soon we all will see. we will make them pay for this=) not by our swords, but by our words and diplomacy. we will give them a great lesson they wont be able to forget.

But i repeat my words about Our diplomat. i think a diplomat who has such a weak character cant represent us. he had to be replaced with someone else. And i think after a few months, Ankara will assign another ambassador. This looks certain for us.

Well, how the Turkish Ambassador is dealt with is for Ankara to decide. We in Pakistan can only extend our unconditional support and good wishes to you.

There is also no question in my mind that Turkey is rising... big time. On every level, Turkey's power potential continues grow: militarily, economically, diplomatically and culturally. The world starts to look far more pleasant to Pakistani eyes a decade or two down the road with China and Turkey, two dear friends, rising to the top.

JERUSALEM: Israel on Wednesday issued a second apology to Turkey over its envoy's treatment, bowing to Ankara's ultimatum in a bid to defuse the latest spat over a TV show that marred ties between the two allies.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in response that Ankara had received the apology it "wanted and expected."

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon apologised to Turkish Ambassador Oguz Celikkol for giving him an angry dressing down in front of cameras to protest a Turkish television series portraying Mossad agents as baby snatchers.

A statement from Ayalon's office said that "out of respect" for a request by President Shimon Peres, the deputy minister sent the envoy an apology.

"I wish to express my personal respect for you and the Turkish people and assure you that although we have our differences of opinion on several issues, they should be discussed and solved only through open, reciprocal and respectful diplomatic channels between our two governments.

"I had no intention to humiliate you personally and apologize for the way the demarche was handled and perceived," Ayalon wrote in the letter.

Ankara, a key Muslim ally to Israel, was infuriated and demanded "an explanation and apology" after Ayalon on Monday made Celikkol sit on a low couch and had the Turkish flag removed from the table at their meeting.

Ayalon issued a initial apology late on Tuesday, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the "protest to the Turkish ambassador was just in its essence but should have been conveyed in an acceptable diplomatic manner."

But Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Wednesday threatened to recall the ambassador if there was no formal apology.
