Give it time, AKP is trying to get the Turkish people to become more religious...
Hazzy jan, this is really wrong approach if Turks are to become more religious. First, I dont think its possible.
Second, there is a very good quote from our former prime minister Mossadeq about religion and state. I dont remember how it goes.
But basically he was saying that whenever the state impose its values (be it secular or religious) in an enforcable manner, the people will go the other direction and either become more religious or respectively distance itself from religion.
Look at what the Shah did. At the time Iran was still a somewhat conservative religious country, and the Shah tried to impose Western style secular values (he for example put up big posters of naked women, and **** pics). This angered a lot of people and shook their value system. This is one of the factors that led to the Iranian revolution.
But the Islamic Republic is doing the same mistake. They are imposing Islam and religion in every aspect of of life.
Iranian people are getting sick of it, and are increasingly getting much less religious. They are taking a lot more distance from religion now.
So the lesson here is that the state should not impose their views and values on the people. Give the people the right to choose for themselves whether to be religious or secular. Dont in any way attempt to "change" them to become more religious (or even less religious at that).
Personal freedoms. That is the recipe.
