Pocket World in Figures: Highest obesity | The Economist

Yes Hazzy, stop whining and creating panic threads about empty hill hit when you have a sticky dedicated thread on Palestine.

That's based on the West Bank and Gaza and I don't take that source seriously, everybody knows what factors lead to obesity and it's not over consumption of food in Gaza. Your source is up to 2003, before severe restrictions against Gaza. So tell us, why did you post a ten year old data sheet? Gaza is not connected the West Bank anymore. Typical slanted report with inconvenient facts, they went out with intentions to look for obese people and it rarely reflects the whole population, yet we all know poverty can lead to obesity since they rely on starchy foods

Anymore derailing of the thread and you will suffer.

Well I am not saying Israel solely is at fault here. But due to the actions of some elements many innocent people get affected both Israelis and Palestinians. Also I do not think Israel needs to expand further, they are big enough and doing pretty well compared to other countries in that region, if Israel starts doing something for the displaced Palestinians, attacks on Israeli citizens might reduce, dont you think so?

Don't take his sources seriously, they don't mention anything that occurred before hand and greatly over exaggerate what happened. The problem with them is they make it sound as if Palestine is sovereign and attacks Israel, it's Israel on the offensive from decades ago they've been ethnically cleansing Palestinians. All that's left is small parts of the West Bank that belong to Palestinians while the rest and majority of space is occupied by the illegal settler population. They exercise massive control over Gaza so they are occupying Gaza as well, everybody in the world has stated this over and over again. International law is something the envy though.

No one was even hurt in this attack, contrary to Iranian sponsored barrel bombs, which kill dozens on daily basis.

Your own source says it's based off of urban population including the West Bank with figures from 1999-2003, you're going to have to try harder than that to make a point. Any knowledgable person could also tell you poverty will most likely lead to obesity due to eating junky/starchy food. So no new updated figures then there's no point in throwing statistics around. Nobody here denies there's a siege against Gaza, over 80% rely on food aid in Gaza and it's a crisis level situation, especially the drinking water. Israel does this in the West Bank too, it's warfare against the Palestinians.

@500

Why don't you go live there since it's so good, just take a look...

Israel/OPT: Gaza power crisis has compounded blockade’s assault on human dignity | Amnesty International

For the last month, all of Gaza’s 1.7 million residents have been living without power for most of the time and in the shadow of a public health catastrophe, after their sole power plant was forced to shut down, causing the failure of several sewerage and water plants.

“This latest harsh setback has exacerbated the assault on the dignity of Palestinians in Gaza and the massive denial of rights they have experienced for more than six years because of Israel’s blockade, together with restrictions imposed by Egypt,” said Philip Luther, Middle East and North Africa Director at Amnesty International.

“The blockade has collectively punished Gaza’s population in violation of international law. The power plant shutdown has further affected all aspects of daily life, and the Israeli authorities must lift the blockade immediately, starting by allowing urgently needed fuel supplies into the Strip and working with all relevant parties to avert a prolonged humanitarian crisis this winter.”

The power plant, which until recently supplied 30 per cent of the Gaza Strip’s electricity, ran out of diesel fuel on 1 November. The resulting shutdown has exacerbated an ongoing water and sanitation crisis and has left Gaza residents without power for 16 hours a day.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, all 291 water and wastewater facilities in the Gaza Strip are now relying on standby generators, which are also affected by the fuel shortages. On 13 November a large sewage pumping station failed in al-Zaytoun, south of Gaza City, allowing more than 35,000 cubic metres of raw sewage to spew into the streets.

Local authorities have struggled to clean up the spill, leaving some 3,000 residents wading through sewage. The clean-up finally began on 29 November, according to local residents, following efforts by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and other agencies, and an emergency donation from Turkey to pay for fuel for critical sewage stations.

“The reason for the flood of sewage was the blockade,” a resident of al-Zaytoun told Amnesty International. “The question is, why is the blockade being allowed to continue? What is our crime? There is no justification for this situation. We just want to live like any other people in the world.”

Ten other sewage pumping stations in the Gaza Strip have been forced to divert sewage to open channels, lagoons, or the sea during the last month, and other stations are close to overflowing.

Before the current crisis, some 90 million litres of raw or partially treated sewage were being dumped into the sea off Gaza every day. Since the power plant shutdown, more raw sewage is being dumped into the sea. For years, more than 90 per cent of the water extracted from the Gaza aquifer has been polluted and unfit for human consumption due to the infiltration of sewage and seawater and prolonged over-extraction because of Israel’s disproportionate use of water resources.

Water supply to households across the Strip, which was already rationed, has also been reduced since the power plant shutdown. Some 65 per cent of Gaza’s population only receive water once every three or four days.

“For each day that the Gaza power plant does not receive fuel, the risk of a massive public health crisis increases. Access to adequate sanitation and drinking water are fundamental human rights. The power plant shutdown should never have been allowed to happen,” said Philip Luther.

Hospitals and other health facilities throughout the Gaza Strip have been relying on their own generators during the lengthy power outages. But the generators are also affected by fuel shortages, jeopardizing essential services like kidney dialysis, operating theatres, blood banks, intensive care units, neo-natal care, and laboratories, putting patients’ lives at risk.

Businesses, construction, and much agricultural work have also ground to a halt amid the power cuts and shortages of fuel and building materials. This has further reduced the incomes of many households who already had trouble meeting their basic needs.

Bakeries have reduced production and people are forced to queue to buy bread. Transportation throughout the Strip has been curtailed; carts pulled by donkeys are now being used to collect solid waste. The Strip’s schools and universities have also been affected.

Since June 2007, when the Israeli blockade was tightened, Gaza’s energy, water, and sanitation infrastructure has been inadequate to fulfil the basic rights of its inhabitants. They were already poor due to prior Israeli restrictions and decades of neglect.

Posting a few pictures of the only available markets in Gaza, food is very expensive due to the siege which limits imports by over 80% of what they used to be. I've been to the markets, there is one popular one in the coastal city of Gaza and many times many things are missing. There is food, which is expensive. Most people rely on food aid from the UN. Of course like usual, you randomly bring up the issue of food as if we're supposed to reward Israel for it. Great job Israel, you managed to do everything wrong against the Palestinains except preventing them from starvation, we're proud of the humane Israeli nation which occupies Palestinian land.

Most of what you see was during 2007 and are planted olives and other pickles. What a pathetic creature, change the topic into 'we're not starving Gaza therefore we're great'. As usual you will only make people resent Israel with that facetious and fascist attitude.

You're a sick person....here are actual evaluations and assessments by the UN:

1 Million Gaza Palestinians Will Need Food Aid – Forward.com

Humanitarian aid for Palestinians shouldn't be necessary | Ross Mountain | Global development | theguardian.com

The huge amount of money spent on aid wouldn't be needed if the international community pressed Israel to lift the blockade and respect international law, and pushed for a political solution

The reason the vast majority cannot afford much food products is due to the siege which destroyed hundreds of thousands of jobs for people who provide for near a million residents.

That guy went over the top and I was about to reply. Glad you did.

Now I am depressed about India though :/

He said nothing wrong. Firstly , Israel's our ally , so we need to support and trust them. But let's put that aside for a minute. I certainly do have sympathies for Palestinians living under a blockade , but many key indicators point to the fact that standard of living in Palestinian territories is several times better than in India, Pakistan or anywhere in South Asia. Palestinians might be having a hard time , but they are certainly not being tramped upon , as to say or living in squalid conditions , as its often portrayed in arab media.

That's fine, that's not the point though. You're speaking of nations, it's natural for even developed nations to have standard towns. These are refugee camps that belong to an occupied people's. This is about racial imperialism, the Palestinians are struggling against it. I've actually been there numerous times for long periods, I could tell you what you want to know about Gaza. However, the theme here is an occupied people's having their rights violated by an aggressive, racially imperialist nation which mimics qualities of pariah states. I don't think you know much about this nation, I wouldn't trust Israel, not even the US could.

Israeli terrorists once again trying to intimidate Palestinian civilians:

Israeli military vehicles enter Gaza, 'fire shell' | Maan News Agency

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli military vehicles entered the central Gaza Strip early Monday, witnesses told Ma'an.

Locals said six bulldozers escorted by military vehicles and tanks drove about 150 meters into Gaza east of Deir al-Balah.

A tank fired a mortar shell towards a Palestinian neighborhood, but no injuries were reported, witnesses added.

Bulldozers leveled lands in the area before they returned to the Israeli side of the border.

An Israeli military spokeswoman called the army's presence in the area "routine activity adjacent to the border fence" but was not familiar with any mortar shells being fired.
