Extremists loyal to the Islamic State in Egypt have attacked a naval patrol ship in the Mediterranean Sea, causing it to burst into flames.

The Egyptian military said earlier a coastguard vessel had exchanged shots with militants just two miles off the coast of northern Sinai, an area bordering Israel and the Gaza Strip.

There were no fatalities among the vessel's crew in the shootout with the terrorists, according to a Facebook message posted by military spokesman, Brigadier General Mohammed Samir.

ISIS declared their presence on Sinai - a peninsula popular with British holidaymakers - last November when up to 2,000 members of the already established jihadi group Ansar Bait al-Maqdis swore allegiance to ISIS' leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Eyewitnesses said a boat patrolling the Sinai coastline spotted a group of ISIS jihadis on the shore and engaged them.

At some point during the fire fight the vessel was struck by a rocket, causing it to burst into flames and withdraw from the battle.

The military said it suffered no casualties although it is understood several patrol workers suffered minor burn injuries.

An AFP photographer and a witness in the Palestinian Gaza Strip, just across the border, said the boat was struck at least two miles from shore.

'We were sitting on the beach and suddenly there was an explosion,' said Ahmed Nofal.

Other navy boats came to rescue the crew as their vessel spewed a plume of smoke.

A witness, fisherman Abu Ibrahim Mohammed from the neighboring Gaza Strip, said the vessel was a gunboat that was about a nautical mile off the coast when it was struck by the rocket.

He did not hear the explosion but saw two smaller boats later trying to put out the fire and that a third, larger one later arrived and towed the burned vessel away.

Two speed boats were seen later combing the area as gunshots occasionally rang out, he added.

wow...these a$$holes are gaining confidence day by day

.
had it been a frigate, what difference would it make ?

the terrorists would still have been able to fire a rocket at it....
Yes but frigates do have close in defense system like Ak630 or the American Phalanx that can take care of such rocket.

.
How are ISIS operating in Sinai? We are hearing about a lot of attacks on Egyptian forces in that region now. Do they hide amongst the local populace or do they hide in the arid barren landscape? Could some knowledable Egyptian member clarify?

.
yeah .

dude some little jihadi fags managed to burst your naval vessel , hows that funny ?

incompetence at its best shape

Tell me again how a small patrol vessel with a small crew and one weapon system (.50 cal) was supposed to take on terrorists armed with Metis ATGMs?

Keeping in mind that an offshore patrol vessel is only tasked with scout or recce for small scale criminal operations and not for combat.

Sinai is a highly mountainous and arid peninsula. Sparsely populated too. There are long distances between the populated areas and amble areas to hid in for terrorists. It's very much an ideal area for any kind of insurgency/guerrilla warfare.

It's 1/4 the size of the UK and populated by only 1.5 million people. You can imagine the difficulties of stopping all terror activities in such an area also considering the geography.

Sinai Peninsula - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (a terrorist group that has pledged allegiance to Daesh) has less than 2000 members and maybe 2-3 times as many sympathizers. That's enough to cause trouble though as we can see.

Also the local population, much like the average Egyptian, has a lot to complain about economically which gives rise to anti-government sentiments. A tiny minority resort to terror.

A lot of weapons smuggling too from Libya. Armed elements from the MB are probably also involved in this.

I have no idea which outside elements support Bayt al-Maqdis.

@Frogman , @Mahmoud_EGY @Kamal_dbk @Amir_Pharaoh @Hell NO @Amun etc. should know more.

. .
This is some serious escalation in their operations. They may be able to even threaten ships passing Suez canal.

The Suez Canal and the Red Sea as a whole is one of the most busy trade routes on the planet. It's impossible for them to threaten the Suez Canal. They have no presence near the Suez Canal. The Egyptian military (which are no pushovers to put it mildly) are heavily present around the Suez Canal. They can possibly threaten commercial ships elsewhere in the Gulf of Suez but I highly doubt it.

Egyptian Navy vessel destroyed by Islamic State militants | Zee News

Cairo: An Egyptian navy vessel was targeted on Thursday by militants affiliated with the Islamic State group, who said they destroyed it with a rocket while it was anchored off the Sinai peninsula's Mediterranean coast.

Egyptian military spokesman Brig Gen Mohammed Samir said the vessel caught fire in an exchange of fire with "terrorists" on the shore and that there were no fatalities among its crew members.

He did not say how much damage the vessel suffered and gave no details on the type of ship or the size of its crew.

However, security officials said an unspecified number of crew members suffered injuries from the fire and that several of them jumped overboard to escape the raging fire.

The Egyptian IS affiliate, which calls itself the Sinai Province of the Islamic State, said it destroyed the vessel with a rocket.

Its claim of responsibility came in a statement posted on Twitter accounts known to be linked to the group.

The authenticity of the statement could not be immediately verified, but it was accompanied by photos purporting to show what appears to be a rocket flying toward the vessel, a large explosion engulfing most of the boat and then black smoke rising up from the vessel.

A witness, fisherman Abu Ibrahim Mohammed from the neighboring Gaza Strip, said the vessel was a gunboat that was about a nautical mile off the coast when it caught fire.

He did not hear the explosion but saw two smaller boats later trying to put out the fire and that a third, larger one later arrived and towed the burned vessel away.

Two speed boats were seen later combing the area as gunshots occasionally rang out, he added.

The vessel, according to the security officials, routinely patrols Egyptian territorial waters and has frequently been used to transport army and police personnel to mainland Egypt, the officials said.

The sea route avoids the overland journey through Sinai, where Islamic militants target government forces.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.
