Could be in response to Pakistani support for Afghan mujaheddin.

I am not complaining about Pakistani intervention in Afghanistan; I simply do not find the whole "Soviets wanting to reach Warm Waters via Balochistan" a convincing narrative.

Soviet intervention in Afghanistan has much more to do with safeguarding communist forces in that country because half of that country was up in arms against them at the time (a book My life with the Taliban offers a comprehensive insight about Soviet intervention in Afghanistan).

The whole "Soviets wanting to reach Warm Waters via Balochistan" sounds like a narrative-building effort on the part of Zia administration to galvanize Pakistani support for Afghan mujaheddin against Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. Understandably so due to Pakistan suffering a major set back in 1971 and the fear of encirclement from USSR and India respectively.

My point of contention primarily rests upon the assumption that Soviet economy was in poor shape in 1980s and opening two fronts in Afghanistan and Pakistan (simultaneously) was not an economically feasible option for the Soviets back then.

Nonetheless, I am open to different views in this matter.

Thanks for your insight.

See it in the context of 1973 Arab oil embargo and Balochistan's proximity to the strait of Hormuz and Pakistani Balochistan's low population and tribal set up, in addition to Indian presence to our east.
You might be able to digest the strategic intentions of the than Soviets Union.

Correction: Americans would've invaded Afghanistan with or without Osama being there. Their main motive was to enter Afghanistan and destabilize Pakistan through the fifth gen warfare elements.
for the sake of discussion lets agree to this outlandish statement.
@Syed.Ali.Haider please show mercy

if true,
then criticism on our role during Soviet Invasion is invalid
then criticism on our role during American invasion is invalid

why?
read your own statement because Americans were going to do it anyway whatever our prior role back in 80s was and whether or not we were going to comply to their demands.

Musharraf was a bit too stupid to see that and gave away a bit too much a bit too easily.
It's all declassified and out there in the open.
what an ill informed comment this is?
almost 200 countries signed in the UN to support the American war on terror. the resolution demanded changes in local laws to facilitate the fight and even declare emergencies and suspend civil liberties. International law was to supersede the local laws. and hand over people whoever were found to be involved in international terrorism
you flatter yourself by thinking your country was supposed to take on the entire world.

the "stupidity" of Musharraf is debatable, mind you its been over 10 years he is out of power, why didnt the democracy renegotiate? Pakistan like other countries was signatories of the resolution it the compliance was unconditional , what difficulties he was supposed to put in? was it a business bargaining?

the subject matter was something else. about our war back in 80s and now. yes we have suffered the most after Afghanistan that is for sure.
its been over 17 years now. lets look for those enlightened solutions shall we? or are we going to continue to blame Musharraf for next 50 years? I already know the respose but lets hear from you

stay blessed

Such a well-developed persecution complex is not mine to solve, but for those who created it and now perpetuate it.
English is not a native language so many things are lost in translation

so on one hand , there is a claim that American invasion of Afghanistan was a ploy to destablise Pakistan but on the other hand the economic hitmen were employed to destablise Pakistan.
one statement contradicts the other. why bother with invasion when hitmen were going to do the job anyway?

Common to both is the false narrative that Pakistan is something so invaluable that the world is out to destroy it. True, that Pakistan is precious for its citizens, but for the rest of the world it is just one more third world country, no offence intended, except for its nuclear weapons.

when we pick up arguments to support our narratives we sometimes use them together although they wont make sense together and may negate each other. once again its due to comprehension issues.

Sir, narratives and arguments rooted in unsound foundations do not amount to much. Selective comprehension where one sees only favorable evidence and not the contrary is far more dangerous than mere incomprehension, for it is a choice and not a disability.
