Is this Type-69II from the FC or the Army? Can you help?

Hello, I am building a scale model of this tank featured in the attached pictures and I'm having trouble finding out basic information. I think this tank was on patrol in the Swat valley in 2009. But I don't know for sure. Can anyone tell me what operation this tank was on in these photos and if it is a Frontier Corps tank or a Pakistan Army tank? I am really interested in the upgraded gun shield armor... who did these upgrades? Were allot of tanks fitted with this turret armor?

The tank is indeed a Type 69-IIM that served in Swat. These pictures are from the second battle of Swat in 2009. The one where it’s standing in rubble and ruins is from An area called Kumba Bazar in Swat, the others are from Maidan, Lower Dir area, Swat.

The tank in question belongs to the Pakistani army and not the frontier corps. As I don’t believe the FC was involved in the Swat operations. I’m not sure if the FC had their own tanks at that time, but do know that all of their tanks were serving in the army prior to their transfer to the FC, so it’s likely this Type 69-IIM made it to the FC later too.

As for the cage on the turret, that was done to many Type 69-IIs and some Al-Zarrars. While the gun shield was put on at least a handful of both models as well. The work was done by Heavy industries Taxila. You can still find those types displayed with such upgrades at the HIT display room, I believe there’s some more photos online and on this forum.

If you need those or other photos of similar Type 69s, you can try looking online, or just ask here and I’ll find some for you. Good luck with your model, and do show us once it’s done

I’d like to make a correction, I failed to notice the faint red Logo on the skirt of the tank and the patch the commander is wearing in one of the photos (the one taken from the rear with the crew member wearing khaki instead of black). It’s hard to tell 100%, but I think That’s the FC KPK logo. I was confused because they have black uniforms in the rest of the photos which PA wears. So this tank may be from FC KPK too. I’ll have to find the order of battle to see what regiments were there and maybe then I can determine the regiment. Maybe someone else here knows. @Desert Fox 1

The black numbers are like the tanks “license plate” in a sense, all military vehicles in Pakistan have a 6 digit combination regardless of type as a reference number of sorts. The arrow is also present with every vehicle. It’s just to denote that it’s a military vehicle, I don’t think it signifies much more.

Yes i believe the yellow circle is the NATO weight class, but as you can see 36 and 40 is being used for Type 69s, I believe one might have more add-ons than the other. @PanzerKiel might be able to comment on the usage of those in PA better.

It only has a red FC logo on it, in which case it’d belong to one of their wings. Again, I could look up the order of battle but it’ll take a while, someone else probably knows it better than me.

As for the two types, yes, they slowly made changes and improvements as the war went on, it lasted 15 odd years so they had a lot of time to change little things they thought would be useful. There were even some modifications made in the field.

605 is the regimental number of one of the tank. The golden arrow shows that a tank belongs to PA 7 Division.

The two small numbers besides the arrow (like 87), it generally shows when was the last time this tank was completely overhauled at a base workshop or even at HIT.

The number within the yellow circles signifies that if a tank has to cross any bridge, that bridge should be able to sustain this much of wight (in tons).

Only a single tank in which the tanker is wearing khaki belongs to FC.
All other are of 7th infantry Division (Golden Arrow)

Both, the last pic shows tanker in FC KPKs Khaki uniform. The troops in black are armoured corps.

No one notices the change in barrel from L-7 to basic 100 mm for FC. There can be a visual difference.
