The JF-17 Thunder (also known as the FC-1 Xiaolong) is a lightweight, single-engine, multi-role combat aircraft developed jointly by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation. With a relatively low unit cost of $15-25 million, price is the primary selling point for this capable and versatile jet which Flashpoints‘ Robert Farley has described as conceptually a “modern MiG-21.”

Despite the seemingly positive bang-for-buck proposition, the JF-17 has had a hard time finding committed buyers. Indeed, part of the reason that defense procurement programs the world over have shirked the jet is prestige, but additionally, the jet remains largely unproven. While a few states have expressed interest, Pakistan and China received some bad news this week with the news that Egypt — a major regional military — will likely instead go with France’s Rafale and Mirage 2000-series of jets.

As reported by Defense News, Egypt will likely acquire the Mirage fighters (specifically the 2000-9s and refurbished 2000-5s) off the United Arab Emirates, and is also currently in the process of negotiating a contract for 20 Rafale fighters. Egypt has additionally shown interest in the MiG-35. All of these options carry a significantly higher per-unit cost compared to the JF-17. The Rafale starts at around $90 million per unit, a considerably larger sum than the JF-17?s modest asking price. While these jets certainly offer advanced capabilities over the JF-17 to make up for their higher price tags (particularly in the areas of avionics and maneuverability), the JF-17 being passed over will undoubtedly frustrate both China and Pakistan.

Egypt’s decision to go with the more pedigreed jet offerings will prove uneconomical. As one analyst who spoke to Defense News notes, “Considering the current Egyptian economical situation, any purchase of Rafale or Mirages would have to be bankrolled by its Arab allies [Saudi Arabia and the UAE].” While the JF-17 would have likely been an entirely adequate solution to the Egyptian Air Force’s needs, the government will go with a considerably more expensive option. This doesn’t bode particularly well for the fortunes of the JF-17 elsewhere.

As Rob noted in his piece back in December, part of the importance of the JF-17 for China in particular is its potential to serve as a “gateway drug” for additional Chinese fighter exports. Each state that opts for the JF-17 is likely to consider the more expensive and advanced J-31 and other offerings. If economically constrained governments like Egypt are not price sensitive enough to see the appeal in the JF-17, China and Pakistan may have a harder time than foreseen competing with Russia for fighter sales. Even though Russian jets require considerably more expensive infrastructure to maintain and have higher operating costs, states continue to be attracted to the tried-and-true formula. If the JF-17 can’t compete on the basis of price, it may fail to take off entirely

I have two questions from this article.
1) Russians loosing to Chinese on defence exports. That too russian engines ? Surely if China offered j10B or Sukoi copy there will be lots of buyers

2) In many similar article it states that JF17 is for cash strapped nation and The Diplomate publisher of this article calls it a Modern Mig 21 . Is Pakistan over playing it's card by keeping it as it's front line fighter. Should PAF move on with Gripin or Rafale’s ?

Rafael is too costly to buy even by wealthy nation . But JF -17 is ment for gate way fighter with multi role function. Leave Egypt as they are waiting for Arabs fund and free Mirage or even low cost mirage deals.

Pakistan is the primary customer of JF-17 so it has already taken off. Exports are good and it will bring unit cost down. They will make fund available for further improvements in JF17. However no exports does not mean we will abandon this aircraft. Nor does it mean the aircraft is not capable as this article notes.

If Egypt can afford Rafale, JF-17 was never meant for Egypt. I am certain exports from countries with limited budgets will come. There are many such countries.

Egypt buys it or not doesn't change the fact that JF-17 offers possibilities for those nations that cannot have American/European/Russian tech........Egypt doesn't have that problem, so they'll go with assets that their airforce is already equipped with.

Countries like Egypt won't buy JF-17. They have a very respectable defence budget and also countries like Saudi Arabia and UAE like to subsidize their defence procurements. Pakistan has better chance offering the JF-17 to countries like Yemen, Nigeria, Libya, Tunisia and other nations with limited defence budget but are in conflict or surrounded by it.

...As long as the JF-17's appease Pakistan's growing-needs, in terms of numbers and quality.. They are primarily, meant to replace the ageing fleet and represent as the minimum-standard-fighters within the Air Force.

Ps. Thus far, there is no dual-seater-trainer-variant. Which is proving to be 'a thorn in the side', in relation to exports.

A modern Mig 21 ....this logic is off base for sure ...moving towards Gripen or Rafale ? That too in the worst case scenario ? and who says that we are considering these two options nowadays .....?
Let the improved Block of Thunder rolls out ....we shall see then whether it's a hard sell or these gonna sell like hot cakes !

Afghanistan too ...as the relations are improving day by day .....Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia as well !

I agree that JF -17 ment for pakistan . But I don't think Egypt can afford Rafale or Mig 35 either. They are making huge mistake by going for second hand mirage 2k-5 unless they get it free or lower cost from Arabs.

Back u on this. I never knew Egypt can afford Larger Jets or Medium 4+ fighters . It's a news for me

Highly doubt Pakistan would want to sell to Afghanistan, a country it considers hostile (in secret at least). Malaysia are giving up their Mig-29's for more advanced fighter jets, don't think they would want JF-17, don't think China would like Pakistan selling jets to Indonesia.

See the recent updates about the Pak-Afghan relations ....Ashraf Ghani is being liked in Islamabad ....JF-17 can't replace a Mig-29 ...but sure it can offer you everything for a homeland defense ....do not forget its carrier killing abilities as well ...!

Mind you Modern day Mig 21 is the complete as far as am concern. Even is Tejas can achieve what Mig 21 did for these years it will be a great success for Single engined light fighters like Jf 17/ Tejas / Gripin . More over JF -17 is the advanced variant of J-7 project of Chinese. JF -17 is the export variant with new multi role and added fire power for today's scenarios

And exactly if Egypt can afford Rafale then they can well go for it. It's a beast for any air force . But if they choose mirage 2000 / F16s at the same price tag of 15 mil then it will be considered as blow for export prospective. As lots of second hand Mirage are freely available in the market. China can boost it's sale by inducting few Jf 17 a squadron or so. It can boost the confidence of the fighter. As it's new to the scene. Where as Mirage and f16 are combat proven for many decades

Exports are not a barometer of fighters capability. By this measure F-22 Raptor would be a failure too since its exports are prohibited by US Congress. Where are the JF-17 Block II that were suppose to join PAF last year ?

Hare Bhaia calm down. Topic is why Egypt choosing second hand mirage or 2nd F16 for more money than JF17 which is 15 mil $ ? Articles states that's if Egypt goes for mirage or f 16 other will also do the same . As low budget nations also not buying in. So will it be hard to sell ?

This may be a political game by Arabs too ... By suppressing Pakistan trade mark in to Arab ...
