Is Sheikh Hasina turning Bangladesh into a one-party state?

Yes I was in Bangladesh during the last BNP regime and things were not this bad. Yes the BNP failed in the power sector but what is happening in the banking sector is much worse and not to forget the massive corruption in all sectors of the economy and administration.

If there is free and fair election tomorrow the AL will be wiped out ...

Bangladeshis are corrupt especially government employees. Anti-corruption watchdog is corrupt itself. I agree on this section with you.
Election will be free and open this year too. AL will win in a landslide victory. I am not AL member nor the BNP but I say this because of the conomic development, jobs, export, confidence on doing business, power sector, DSX, borrowing power of business, major projects in Bangladesh.
People are sick and tired of Strike and Blockade by BNP. It's not Khaleda's fault but I speak with many BNP leaders who doesn't like Tarek Rahman but can't speak in public. Tarek has bad attitude towards his own people and Tarek thinks he is God of BNP but he is not. BNP will be better off without Tarek.
For this reason, AL is going to be in power for at least 10 years more. By law, Khaleda and Tarek can't participate in election. I think thats better for Bangladeshi economy.

Democracy back fired in bangladesh. Let's assume that there are 100 villagers in a place and 10 are rich men and 30 are common but good folks and 60 thieves .

Do you mean that I will not have the right to vote for the person I like?

Come gloat when you surpass either of other three major economies in the region not on predictions.. Till then best of luck to Bangladesh

At 7.5% compound rate, after 10 years,
the GDP of BD will be = 250,023 billion x (1+(7.5/100))^10 = 515,305 billion

At 5.5% compound rate, after 10 years,
the GDP of PAK will be = 304,400 billion x (1+(5.5/100))^10 = 519,959 billion

At 6.5% compound rate, after 10 years,
the GDP of BD will be = 250,023 billion x (1+(6.5/100))^10 = 469,327 billion

At 6.5% compound rate, after 10 years,
the GDP of PAK will be = 304,400 billion x (1+(6.5/100))^10 = 571,400 billion

If you live in Dhaka or Chittagong or any city, certainly things were not this bad. But Bangladesh has 64 districts.
what is happening in the banking sector is much worse
No disagreement. This is really a disaster and the failure of this govt.
not to forget the massive corruption in all sectors of the economy and administration.
It was same or perhaps worse in bnp regime. But yes in quota system of jobs Awami League is devouring the Mukti zoddha fake quota ,and many more politicization, again no disagreement. Surely that's not good .
If there is free and fair election tomorrow the AL will be wiped out ..
Thats the main problem. Surely Awami League will not win as most of BD folks don't like Awami ideology and sycophancy of India and harping about 1971 and following the vicious chetona cult. BAL also have to change its policy, if they don't want to change and bnp come to power in 2024-25, BAL will be again out for 10-15 year no doubt.
BD politics is controlled by the government inside government; most BD folks mistakenly believe that it is R&AW, but in reality it's not.

But bnp need a lesson to learn, and if there is any election in BD atm, then Awami League will be in trouble and bnp will be in power and past days will return.
So let bnp stay away from power atleast for 15 years, and then they will learn a lesson, like BAL has learnt a lesson of BAKSHAL and was out from power for 21 years.
So since 2024 election we will talk for democracy. By this time BNP should learn some lesson , and surely they will do good for Bangladesh; perhaps better than BAL if they can follow the model of their founder Mr Ziaur Rahman .
But current mother - son thug gang model is not going to work for sure.

Do you mean that I will not have the right to vote for the person I like?

You have this right for sure, but when most of country folks will be matured. Let bnp stay out from power for total 15-20 years as Awami League was out for 21 years after BAKSHAL.
The concept of voting is for more civilized peoples who can think maturely. There should be no fair election where they use people's innocent religious feelings as the tool of their filthy politics.
BNP made alliance with Jamat Islam and devour almost every seat( by showing themselves islamic ; in reality BNP is never even nearly islamic), and later used all against BD folks.
Now let them pay their penance .

Good for you and happy for Bangladesh, But celebrate your achievements without belittling others, That's the difference between class and crass, Something few of your compatriots need to learn

Not one BD member knows the basics on the subject. It was pretty awful owning this one (but he knew enough to not persist further down its particular bunny logic hole):

Couple of them are like elementary school kids, One trying to act like a expert on economics other a expert on global affairs, Both cant seem to see beyond their nose.. Pretty hilarious mate.. I mean how incompetent can one be in a world of information technology ?

@Centaur already answered your prayers. I will try once again. Bangladesh has changed. People talk business and prosperity of their businesses. Khaleda talk about strike not economic development. Khaleda barks at Bangladesh Military. She learnt nothing from resounding disapproval of her politics by the people of Bangladesh. She was almost being beaten up by small business owners of Kawran Bazar when her convoy was passing by kawran Bazar. She escaped unharmed.
She is there where she belongs. I visited howa vaban twice. I could hear Tarek's associates are openly discussing money and how much they earned from which projects. He is still a thug and looter.

Yes Sajeeb Wazed isn't innocent and he also steals money but not like howa vaban.

Munshi thread but no India Doctrine post? Disappointed.

Growth rate always takes US dollar inflation rate into account. And according to IMF currently GDP of BD is 273 billion. With 7.5% growth rate in 10 years it is going to be around 740 billion considering 3% USD inflation. 676 billion if we take 6.5% growth rate.

Pak with 5.5% growth rate in 10 years becomes 687 billion economy. With 6.5% it gets to 753 billion.

Worst system ever for low income country=the so called democracy!
True. Autocracy is better for poor countries..but merit based autocracy...not the dynastic one which is likely in BD,

Being a democracy doesn't mean you have to change your goverment every four or five years.

Being a democracy requires validation and approval of the people (you understand where the demo in democracy comes from?) in a balanced time period (Even the commies understood what that time period roughly is in their 5 year plans).

Not hold gun to peoples head (military/police crackdown) and they hold gun to yours (revolution/total hard reset with blood) and see who blinks first.

Tell me why there are no toilet in India?

Blame it on democracy?

Tell me why there are no toilet in India?

Blame it on democracy?

On poverty and shortage of capital, that another country overcame by forcing people to do what their leadership demanded, by taking steps that led to famine and death in the millions, by imposing the will of one individual on the country with the largest population in the world, by placing the country's armed forces in the collective ownership of one political party, not of the nation. And the fact that this largest population in the world could thereafter shit in enclosed spaces in toilets is enough to justify those crimes in the name of the people?
