What's new

Is Pakistani military taking note of recent conflicts, technologies and tactics?

If you have your COAS having his presence in everything from the COVID relief efforts to discussing NROs with squabbling politicians (who have been proven to be corrupt and national security threats), you can not expect for much development to take place. The COAS has pretty much become equal in visibility and clout to rival a cabinet minister and that is going to be disastrous in the long run.
Fairly simple solution to that (but may require a bit of courage): implement a policy that the military chiefs cannot approach the President, PM and other ministers directly. any and all communications must be handled by MoD and the Minister of Defence. Briefings to the press etc. must also be given by the ministry staff, not by generals. also, post the next chairman joint chiefs from other forces and not from the army.

It might be easier to list the technologies Pakistani military has not paid attention to, which include:

Cyberattacks (Iran, Israel, North Korea, China, Russia, US)
Drones (Iran, Israel, Turkey, China, US)
Cheap DIY suicide drones (Iran)
Satellites (Iran, Israel, Russia, India, China, US)
Precision cruise missiles (Iran, Israel, Russia, China, US)
Civilian space program (Iran, India, Russia, China, US)
Artificial military islands (Iran, China, US)
Dual use civill/military rockets (Iran, China, Russia, US)
EMP weapons (Iran, China, Russia, US)
Asymmetric decentralized navy (Iran)
Remote control explosive boats (Iran)
Small speedboats (Iran)
EFP armor piercing IED (Iran)
Sea skimming missiles (Iran, Russia, China, US)
Artificial intelligence (Iran, Israel, Russia, China, US)
Proxy warfare (Iran, Israel, Russia, US)
Ballistic missiles (Iran, Israel, India, North Korea, China, Russia, US)
Cryptocurrency (Iran, North Korea, China, Russia)
JF-17 export restrictions
Reverse engineering (Iran, China)
Loitering munitions (Iran, Russia, China, US)
Terrain and topography surveying
SCADA cyberattacks on infrastructure (Iran, Israel, Russia, China, US)
Exportable missiles (Iran, Russia, China, US)
Hypersonic glide vehicle (Iran, China, US)
MIRV research (Iran, China, US)
Underground missile bunkers (Iran, Russia, China, US)
Drones and cyberattacks (Iran, Turkey, Israel, Russia, China, US)
Directed energy weapons (Turkey)
Seizing enemy ships (Iran)
Guaranteed hit smart scope rifles (Israel, US)
Ninja blade missiles (US)
you missed out KSA and India in proxy warfare category

The latest domains of modern warfare i.e. Cyberspace and electromagnetic spectrum are the key areas Pakistan need to look into. The Indian armed forces are working on network centric warfare that includes Satellites, radars, AWACS, communications all working in coordination with ground troops and forces in an integrated battle group in order to decimate the enemy in blitzkrieg style. Electronic warfare has evolved to remarkable level in last two decades. The people’s liberation Army (PLA) and People’s liberation Army and Air Force ( PLAAF ) have since decades been gaining advancements in both EW and on induction of Artificial intelligence in its weaponry . Other than the Cyberspace and Electromagnetic spectrum, the Chinese have moved forward huge leaps in Upper space warfare in the shape of Development of Hypersonic missiles and Deep sea warfare as well. India has started working in these domains in order to counter Chinese threats. Pakistan can never afford to stay complacent in this regard, the changing geopolitical dynamics of the region can trigger a war that can engulf the whole region into an inferno. Keeping in view the perennial unstable political situation and the dwindling economic state, the Military master minds at GHQ have a daunting task to accomplish.

RAND studies — while acknowledging the pitfalls of forecasting the future warfare — highlight that modern warfare is constrained by international laws, public opinion, and media coverage besides other well-known trends. Future warfare may entail increasing public concern for civilian casualties, especially in perceived “wars of choice”. The state with an edge in “lawfare” — manipulating international law to its advantage, will be able to restrain its adversary. Pakistan needs to do this more effectively for Kashmir/IOK following Hamas’ example.

AI in particular is one such disruptive technology with no state monopolising its access. Militaries all over the world are integrating “AI and autonomy” into their organisational processes, C2 (command and control) systems, logistics and weapon systems. Military applications of AI, however, induce serious risks and ethical concerns. AI might affect deterrence through inadvertent engagement of friendly or civilian targets by autonomous systems, leading to technical accidents or failures. Deterrence, essentially a human function, once delegated to autonomous machines can no longer remain fully under human control. Pakistan needs to work closely with China to offset any Indian advantage in AI.

Are you saying our VT-4 procurement is a mistake?
Nope. I'm sure it has its role, but clearly tanks are becoming a niche role now due to the advancement of counter tactics with at and idling weapons. No more battle of Kursk scenarios ever.

Mere bahi we do need to look beyond all this...

Pakistan already has this as a result of Project Vision by PAF... all our Radars Awaacs and other assets are linked together using Link16 and they are managed by two different North and South Commands... we have also integrated homegrown BMS with Air force assets but real progress needs to be made in terms of Cyber warfare/Electronic warfare especially by PAK Army...

We also need to work in few more areas including Sats, Super/Hypersonic missiles and AI

Both armies lack effective anti-aircraft firepower, so low-tech UAVs have had a lot of success. But these UAVs are of little use to modern armies.

It might be useful in small border skirmishes.

Tell me about it, I want to go hide somewhere whenever I remember how many technologies Pakistan military is missing. It is embarrassing.

No drone force in Pakistan in 2020 is honestly unbelievable and utterly unacceptable.

There is no other country on earth with an enemy as hostile as India is to Pakistan that doesn't have a drone force in 2020.

Drones are great for peacetime surveillance and attacking 3rd rate guerrila forces
They are not good for combat against a large well armed adversary

😱 Can make an individual thread on each, though quite a few are very basic.

It may take a few years or decades, but eventually, the mindset driving the current leadership will end.

Slowly, even the biggest 'fans' of the armed forces are going to pick-up on the lack of transparency and slow drive of said leadership. The inquisitive questions will eventually become relentless questioning; what will the armed forces do then -- call everyone an 'ISSB reject' ? I think, eventually, the sincere heads will take charge.

It’s their lethargy towards change, that makes one fear for the future. And these thoughts just aren’t ours but is shared by plenty within.

A change here would mean PA sharing a piece of the pie with PAF. I sincerely doubt it’ll happen. They simply don’t have the vision for undertaking such steps. We are still stuck in WWII version of land-warfare. Can mention details of missteps but that’d get into operational domain. Just that, there’s just no vision. :)

May be when the new, relatively better technology aware officer crop start reaching positions of influence, this may change.

It's not like this has not been pitched, or that they do know how this tech can change the results on the ground. But it's mindset of a generation. Can't make old people think different. It would be either via spilt blood or some miracle.

Majority here does not know that the first weapon system Chinese deployed in Depsang were Sula89 drones, to offset Indian infantry advantage in mountain warfare. And this was one of the first things that Nato was updated about. India directly went for an off the shelf buy, after this. All of this tech will eventually be used against us too. =)

Please can you make a thread on it? Think this deserves a separate thread on its own. Will happily contribute with some relevant online info.

The fact that letting a small MALE bypass field army/brigade AA protection,ECM simply means failure.
