Is Pakistan Too Big to Fail? l -WSJ

why would it collapse if aid was cut off?

cutting off aid would probably increase gdp.

Pakistan is not a self sufficient country. It needs import and it needs foreign exchange.
Without AID, pak rupee will devalue further and inflation will increase. It will fuel further unrest.

biased rat.... writting crap.
Which point crap?

WSJ is reputed news paper, they don't allow any TOM, Dick article.

The OP is an Indian journalist, and yes, it DOES matter who is saying what, and when.
Looks like the guy wants to use his WSJ platform to incite violence against Pakistan.
I don't blame him. And I don't even blame WSJ; the former is an Indian--a hawk at that--and the latter wouldn't mind a spicy story about 'foreign affairs'.
Factually, the 'northern supply route' may become 100% effective in bypassing Pakistan but it will be more susceptible to the whims of Russia and its allies. Not to mention, hugely costly. I mean, HUGELY COSTLIER.
Secondly, even if Russia is all peachy about the supplying through its spheres of influence, the GI's will not be any safer at all. Not at all. Pakistan can then do to the Americans--with far more effectiveness--what it did to the Soviets: Simply look the other way as the tribals cross into Afghanistan. Hey, if Americans can't prevent tens of thousands of Mexicans across the border--harmless, poor souls--then so can Pakistan? The terrain is too hard to manage anyway.

PS. I still don't know why are the Americans in that region? Shortly after 9/11, 'security' was the reason. It is still the reason but the counter to that is effective immigration, targeted operations, border patrol. None of these require tens of thousands of GI's in the region. Or may be it is all about some China containment for which Pakistan is unwilling to oblige the Americans. CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

Why isn't Pakistan self sufficient?

Do you think India is more self sufficient than Pakistan?

Per density area there's not much difference.

Next question. Why would AID cause the rupee to devalue? given a) AID is a very small percentage of gdp and b) if it were a large percentage would drive down prices.

you havent got a clue really.

Naaa. I'd any given day take 'The Nation, Pakistan' for WSJ.

Not if that article is a sign of the standard of WSJ. I'd take The Nation over it.

Why are we even dignifying a propaganda piece by an Indian writer?

All this article say that pak may collapse without freebie military hardware and AID from USA.
From recent development in USA, things are going on that direction. Good luck pakistan..

This article is of low quality and mainly incorrect.
Firstly i would urge the USA to keep their freebie military and aid as you put it. Historically when aid has been stopped and Pakistan has had to pull its finger out then the productivity has increased.
Secondly as i have stated in previous threads the aid given to Pakistan is distributed off by the corrupt ba***rds politicos and about 10% gets to the actual root of where its needed, so please for the sake of the common man in Pakistan stop the aid - we don't want what we don't see. If you want to pay bribes to the leaders then that is a matter for you.
Thirdly just look at the way Afghanistan has had its heart ripped out by the assistance of this aid. Please wake up and smell the coffee. With aid you are showing the world you are a handicap when it comes to the international table. Aid is a downward spiral.
Finally Pakistan is too big and strong to fail so please park this article where the sun don't shine and leave it their.

I think the the better question is: Is america in too much debt to fail?

True.. And the answer is YES.. As they say, you owe bank a million Dollars, and the bank owns you.. You owe bank a billion and and you own the bank...

If USA fails, it will take half the world down with it, including Europe and China... So unless that equation changes, yeah, its too much in debt to fail

The tipping point is coming within 5 to 10 years. I do fear the consequences but empires fall and new ones replace them. But the good thing is that starving in india and pakistan will not starve any more than they are doing and those like palestinians that are suffering injustices by zionists and americans will benefit. Silver lining to the cloud I suppose.

India as well?

Thats incredible of you to notice that....I was going to say something but dont want to offend

.
but not India?

Big turmoil.. Yes... But considering our imports are not that much to USA, it wont be as bad as an export oriented economy.. No one will get finished, but every country will undergo its share of economical pain... So a lot of vested interest in the world to not let USA fail..

PS: The idea for leaving India out was that its impact on world economy is not as large as that of Europe or China.. I am though flattered that you think it deserved a mention..
