At first I know that 1.5$ mil of early 1900 is not same of today's but my question is: Is it worthy to spend on monuments to revive heritage and give sense of pride and nationhood at such high cost when you can spend that on public for same (care, ownership, nationhood, etc)
I know spending on nation symbols and culture is vital but why so much on one statue?Construction of a world class Temple, Mosque, Gurdawara and Church will deliver the same message of unity and heritage (as far as of previous 800 years).

P.S. Its India money and their wish how they want to spend it.. I just need profound reasons for academic purposes.

We are crazy people man...I really doubt any normal and people is fond of wasting tax payers money on statues...But in India everything is possible....

Reason is that whatever historical monuments we had was destroyed during Islamic attacks in last 1200 years, so we have pretty less historical monuments left in India which can generate tourism. So tax payers were demanding the building of monuments which reflect their forefathers ideals and it is one of them.

In Maharashtra it values a lot especially for tax payers while wealthy people claiming to be agricultural person want files in rupees to rip off tax payers. Though there are hundreds of farmers suffering on any given time. But if this venture starts generating money it can become a hen which gives gold eggs. That's the motive behind it and as a mumbaikar and taxpayer I support it.

It's not just a statue, they're going to develop a whole liberty island type situation around it if I'm not mistaken, so maybe it's not as bad as some people think it is.
It is dual purpose, for historical as well as tourism purposes.

Cost is not pretty much considering Mumbai's high cost market. It is overall package, one can not bind it in one lens only.

Do you know buddy that there will not be only a single statue there? There will be auditorium, food court, gallery, museam, gardens. Government has already increased funding for fish aquarium just in front of it on Marine drive.

In a state, that is notorious for farmer suicide (3000 died in 2015 alone) and where 17,000 women and children in tribal areas just perished in one year due to malnutrition? You must be joking. This statue is an insult to Chatrapati Shivaji.
