ok my bad i got the wrong idea but first think i dont understand why IAF had settled only for 51 M2000 which would have been good if we had gone for 150 as u said second when the IAF finally want the 2000-5's which the MMRCA was all about in the begning the producton was stooped buy the french.and i dont know why the dealing's hit a dead end in my opinion regarding aquiring their 2000-5's which was for sale by UAE can any body throw some light

There are too many combat types currently

The indians which is typical of them have used politics to get in the way of common sense.

Between now and 2020+ IAF have to reduce combat types to 4 from current 6

This means

SU30MKI, MMRCA LCA & PAK FA only

My argument it could have been SU30MKI MIRAGE200 LCA & PAK FA

RAF will have 2 types in future JSF & TYPHOON.
France Rafael & mirage2000
Israel 3 types F16 & F15 & F35
PAF F16 THUNDER FC20
PLAAF FC20 FLANKERS J8 & JXX
USA F22 F35 F18
RUSSIA FLANKERS PAKFA MIG29

There are too many combat types currently

Between now and 2020+ IAF have to reduce combat types to 4 from current 6

strom you need to forget about 2000's because the french had stopped the production once they finish the life cycle in IAF i think they are history same goes with mig29's

SECOND about su 30 mki and pakfa they are are from same supplier so it wont be any logistical problems

mmrca it will be single vendor

next mca and lca by HAL and also both the sukhois will aslo be produced from HAL including spares
the MMRCA once SELECTED jet will also be manufactured by HAL including spares

that make HAL THE single vendor for all the jets operated by IAF in the future so i dont see any problem in maintenance and logistics

Guys, I think IAF commanders are much more knowledgeable than us and the reason why they welcomed MKIs into IAF colours was because they CAN afford to maintain them at the same time expect more twin engined fighters.

To the member who raised Israel's comparison; certainly Israel is a master of skies when it comes to air combat but it is barely 1/10th our size. In our situation, we need long range, double engined deep invasion fighters because our threats and irritants are also huge.

IAF's aim is to create a 850-950 fighter force in the next decade and that would mean more fighters that can hit deep, long and heavily to deter an invasion and counter-retaliation.

Besides, I think the future overall costs might start coming down as AMCA, FGFA and Tejas Mk2 go into local production.

But i just think 600+ SU30MKI F18SUPER HORNETS & PAK FA will be very expensive to maintain & operate.

Don,t get more wrong it will be a brilliantly equipped AIR FORCE once all arrive post 2020.

250 single engine TEJAS will be needed i think

Storm jee.. your observations are fine and correct.. Simple fact is GoI and IAF has felt the need for this large and highly potent MKI to defend and safeguard our country from our large and competant adversaries.. Money is a secondary one compared to the primary task of safeguarding our country... And we are not spending our entire GDP here... A lot of calculations are already done before bringing the figure to 270...
