What's new

Is India's lack of Olympic gold 'mystifying' or are we thinking about global sporting success all wrong?

Anything that happened till 1949 or 1950 doesn't count. The South Asian countries were newly independent. They were under the influence of the departing ex-colonizers. Many agents of foreign countries held crucial positions in the newly established governments. Early policies, decisions and actions attributed to the newly born nations were actually dictated by British or Soviets.

I never said gold medals mean a country's overal national strength, I was just pointing out that you suggested in sports China is oughly equal to Australia, Sweden and Hungary is very wrong.

I wasn't.
I was saying that the article is wrong because by using gold medals as the standard the article would place China roughly equal to those three. I felt that was insane so I made my comment which probably no one could follow except me. :))

Sorry, I think and write in a way that ends up confusing everyone. Even Canadians don't understand me. Guess I am on the wrong planet or something. Sadly no place to go.

Comparing to the Olympics , China fares better in mind games, academic contests like math olympiad and skill competition.

Aside from cricket, what sports are Indians good at? Let’s be honest, Indians don’t have a good culture for sports. You would think a country with over one billion people would be able to compete competitively in international events but, alas, this is not so.

And this is a country with a sports ministry. God knows what theydo there except to park babus and shuffle papers.

That is because China made substantial investments in its sports infrastructure, something India never did. Whether from public or private sources, India needs to spend billions to up its image in sports.

the cheapest - though not easiest - thing for Indians to excel at would be to improve its image at individual, non-ball sports like bodybuilding, weightlifting, swimming, running and MMA. That would already make it so that people view Indians more positively. Nobody thinks being strong is bad.

ball sports and team sports are very expensive and require a ton of investment. This investment does not always pay off - see cricket. they do not necessarily always result in improving your image either - ball sports/team sports have alot of room for bullshit, while 1v1 power sports are straightforward, I win you lose, I am superior, no room for bullshit, undisputed victory.

WHy is china still so bad in team sports ? it will do a lot for their image if they are champs in soccer, hockey, cricket etc.

its the opposite. in team sports there's always room for bullshit and excuses. look at all the excuses people are making for the Lakers just because they had Kobe at one point. they got Jeremy Lin after Linsanity and they still fucked it up.

In individual sports there's no room for bullshit. It's 1v1. Someone wins, someone loses. A win is indisputable.

Say what you like, kashmir is never ever going to separate from India.

are you one of those indians too ?

more then half kashmir is already separated from india . wake up
It's not a post-colonial issue Shardra, it's a post Muslim domination issue. But you have the general idea right. The inferiority complex is perpetual and a fossilised element of indian culture.

but pakistan win a dozen gold in every olympic .... :omghaha: :omghaha: :omghaha: :omghaha:

but people go crazy on teams sports. I said it will be good for china's image. A soccer final is much more keenly watched then a tabletennis final.

We're comfortable with our sporting progress so far as a nation starved of adequate resources for sports. India however is a global supapowa. You should have more than 2 Golds in 50 years if we're to believe your propaganda.

Let's see till 2060. 1962 or 1999 are skirmishes. By that logic 1975 Sikkim and 1987 Siachen annexations also should be considered as final. The decisive war is yet to be seen. If nothing happens till 2060, then I admit India's defeat.

Average number of medals won per capita at the Summer Olympics from 1896 to 2016

Finns, Hungarians and Swedes are looking very mighty.

RETARDED sport that is cricket is the curse in South Asian sport. A shit boring sport that nobody cares about is so popular in South Asia. This sport is sucking away all the money and resources that could otherwise spent on better globally recognised sport. Every time I think about cricket, the only thing comes to my mind is curry smell. YUUUUCKKKK!!!!!!!!

India is not a country.. it's a region. Inside it every group works it's own way. It lacks the national cohesion required to build a policy that develops raw talent.. to have strong sports people come out. The other problem is cricket mafia.
