If the recent purchase of Russian S-400 air defence systems might not have made our rivals nervous , other air defence systems that India is putting together will definitely give them a severe headache to enemies military planners, Since India for last decade and more has been working on a comprehensive plan to develop world’s most heavily guarded airspace.
No doubt, India is still working to fill gaps in its air defence and is procuring and developing many air defence systems which will provide India in next few years, with a multi-layer air defence coverage of the key facilities and Military establishments , while it continues to vastly improve its Threat detection and Threat engagement capabilities .
Top tier of air defence systems will be covered by India’s Ballistic missile defence (BMD) system and S-400 Systems which are more of strategic weapons mostly like to be used to secure Highly value Civilians and military establishments and MR-SAM , Akash and QRSAMS which can be used to secure Point air defence and Area air defence systems .
Top Tier air defence systems of India
Ballistic missile defence (BMD) system: India’s BMD consists of a double-tiered system consisting of two interceptor missiles, namely the Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) missile for high altitude interception, and the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) Missile for lower altitude interception. Current Phase-I BMD missile system can intercept any incoming missile launched from 5,000 kilometres away.
Phase-II BMD missile system will see the development of two new missile systems which intercept ballistic missiles with a range of beyond 5,000 km and will be in a class of THAAD missile deployed by the US.
S400 TRIUMF – S400 is a unique system designed to counter a variety of threats from hypersonic cruise missiles to UAVs, airborne early warning aircraft, stealth fighters and even precision-guided munitions. S400 incorporates four different types of missiles, which allows these missiles to engage targets from 120 km, 200 km, 250 km to 380 km, which can also track targets as far as 600kms . S-400 is highly successful air defence systems and counted among the best air defence systems in the world even by Western powers.
Indigenous LRSAM : DRDO has bee tasked to develop a new Long range Air defence systems with an effective range of 150kms . Not much information is available on its development and when it will be ready for testing but it can safely be assumed that new missile system will be used to provide backup to other top tier missiles in securing high-value targets and reportedly is direct spin-off from the technologies developed for India’s Ballistic missile defence (BMD) system
Mid Tier air defence systems of India
LR-SAM/MR-SAM/Barak-8 : Indo-Israeli developed Medium ranged LR-SAM/MR-SAM/Barak-8 will interception range of 70-90kms is considered among best missile systems against conventional aerial platforms and among few air defence systems which can actually engage Supersonic cruise missiles which are considered difficult to intercept.
Akash Weapon System: locally developed supersonic medium range surface-to-air missile system designed to counter a variety of aerial threats including fast moving aircraft, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles up to a maximum range of 25 km and an altitude of 20 Km. Akash has the ability to hit targets as close as 200 meters against not so easy to detect aerial platforms like smaller MALE-Class Drones .
S-125 Neva/Pechora/ SA-3 Goa : Soviet era supplied S-125 are surface-to-air missile system , which uses 2 different missile versions with an effective range of about 15 km to 35kms . India still has large of this systems in its force which currently are been replaced by Akash Weapon System.
SA-6 “Gainful”: Soviet era supplied SA-6 is a mobile surface-to-air missile system mounted on tracked vehicle with an effective range of about 25kms which currently are been replaced by Akash Weapon System.
Low Tier air defence systems of India
QRSAM: DRDO and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) are co-developing QR-SAM (Quick Reaction, Surface to Air Missile) to meet demands of Indian Army . QR-SAM weapon system will be a quick reaction, all weather, network-centric capable of search on the move, track on move and fire on short halts while engaging multiple targets at ranges of about 30 km with two vehicle configuration for Area Air Defence.
QR-SAM weapon system is essentially a mobile air defence system which will move with forward troops to provide air defence support to strike corps against cruise missiles,drones and other low-flying aerial platforms like Attack helicopters and fighter jets .
9K38 Igla : India also has a large number of Soviet-developed 9K38 Igla man-portable infrared homing surface-to-air missiles. Igla has an operational range of 5.2kms and currently India is in process of replacing these man-portable missiles with newer systems and currently has been offered SAAB’s RBS 70 Man-Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) ,Thales group developed StarStreak ,MISTRAL-2 by MBDA, and Russia’s latest IGLA-S (SA-24) .
