Is India Selling Out Its Tigers?

@Akheilos

New tiger reserve may revive Vaigai at source - The Times of India

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu's fifth tiger sanctuary, Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Reserve, will help revive the Moola Vaigai, the source of Vaigai in the high altitudes within the area for the reserve carved out from Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Theni, wildlife experts say.

They also said the reserve, which the state is preparing to open, would create many job opportunities.

The new reserve will be created by carving out 50,000 hectares of forest area from Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Theni and 47,000 hectares from the adjoining Grizzled Giant Squirrel Sanctuary in Srivilliputhur, foresters said. It will be the second largest tiger reserve in Tamil Nadu, next only to Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (1.4 lakh hectares).

In response to residents of the area, including an AIADMK MLA who opposed the new tiger reserve, wildlife officials said rejuvenating Moola Vaigai will benefit wild flora and fauna and also ensure that people of five districts - Dindigul, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Theni -have a stable supply of water from the Vaigai. "Nearly 90 lakh people in these districts will benefit directly," a senior wildlife officer said.

He said encroachments in Megamalai will be removed to revive the Moola Vaigai and improve water availability in the river.

"Water availability along the course of the Vaigai will increase to nine months a year from the current two months a year," he said.

Foresters have reported an increase in the tiger population and other big cats in areas that will make up the new reserve. Around half a dozen tiger sightings have been reported from the Vannathiparai reserve forests and Upper Manalar area in Megamalai sanctuary. Tigers have been sighted in all four ranges of the Grizzled Giant Squirrel Sanctuary, especially in the Rajapalayam range. We hope to declare the tiger reserve open by the end of the year, the senior wildlife officer said.

Had that been the case dada you would have said in the first place that the article is nothing but exaggeration by the vested interest.

Bro regarding tigers its exaggerated article but regarding forest there may be a cause of worries. thats why i never mentioned tigers in my reply as they are fiercely protected now in Indian forests and no western needs to give us advice on how to protect tigers or lions as they are being protected far better now

Those laws need to be changed, we can't keep on importing minerals when we can mine them in india at a fraction of those imports. We respect nature and we know how to maintain a balance between the growth and nature. We don't need white men/women to tell us what to do and what not to. I am sure you would have done the same if such objections were raised against CPEC.

It's NGOs dwindling money talking ... nothing more than that.

While I agree that the NGO's of late, have been working on an agenda other than conservation, I think there are certain measures that the government needs to take.

The government needs to provide enough underpasses or elevate the entire sections of the highways that pass even close to national parks. I know of one major road connecting Kerala and Karnataka that passes through a major tiger reserve that has been severely hampered by the traffic passing through it. In fact, if I remember it correctly, a few tigers/elephants were hit by speeding trucks at night. That, to me, is totally unacceptable.

Elevating the highways/railways will certainly increase the costs but it is far better than destroying the local wildlife.

If government wants to build roads or submerge forests with dams, that should be compensated by building even bigger forest reserves elsewhere by moving the villages.

Tiger reserves are only increasing, and there is shoot at sight orders in these forest areas and not to mention nobody is allowed to go there. Otherwise we will have Human rights activists create a headache..

The Asiatic Lions in Gujarat have been doing quiet well when he was the CM for 10+ years.
Besides, we are increasing our forest network by interconnecting all the forest areas.

Yes this was already praised in the article

India has a strong environmental legacy, with exemplary wildlife laws going back more than 40 years. The Constitution requires every citizen “to protect and improve the natural environment.” In 2010, India signed an international agreement pledging to do “everything possible to effectively manage, preserve, protect, and enhance habitats” of tigers.

India has done an incredible job creating 48 tiger reserves, but many are small green islands. Cats and other species can’t survive long-term without the few tenuous wildlife corridors that connect parks. Corridors allow tigers to establish their own territory, move, mate, hunt and escape monsoon flooding. Projects that bisect or eliminate them could spell doom for isolated populations.
BUT something NEW was highlighted changing policies...Please do read the article!

predicting the losses without any basis
Basis are tat which happened in the West and conservationists are trying to help...

If the laws affect the tiger numbers the first voice will be raised by Indians not some foreign crooks.
When and how when experts are being hushed?

So all this is a lie?

Among them is a river-diversion scheme that would submerge nearly one-third of the Panna Tiger Reserve, a project that had been shelved by Jairam Ramesh, the environment minister under the previous national government, who had called it a “disastrous” idea. A road that runs along the edge of the Pench Tiger Reserve is slated to become a four-lane highway without overpasses for wildlife at crucial crossings. New coal mines are planned for central India, where hundreds of tigers live in a string of reserves.

I came to this thread because the title. You can't blame me for the dishonesty shown on the part of the author to grab eyeballs with such a catchy title. Do you honestly believe you can argue with someone who can't be honest what they really want to talk about?

I think whats happening is new conservation areas are being built and Tigers will most likely be moved into the new larger location.. The policy changes may be to reduce the bureaucratic hurdles for new projects. India has huge reserve of coal and yet we Import them from western countries. Its simply the west trying to protect their exports and India try to reduce its imports.Even after all the new projects and reduction of Tiger reserves in some areas, Nationwide the total forest area and Tiger reserves should only increase.

You westerners destroyed ur forests and local animal species ... U conquered countries in east and africa brought their animals to extinction ...

After ur departure we are still reviving our wild life from the harm u have done ...

Dont teach us wildlife protection we are Nature worshiper's with over half our population still practicing Vegetarianism....

The ppl who do not follow our laws and follow some other agenda's are not exactly our well wishers ,this organization is not the sole protector of environment across the world ,we have numerous governmental org and local NGO's who have worked on the ground, forest protection forces who have lost lives,we love our tigers more than anyone in the world.

We don't need anyone's advice in protecting our environment specially not from ppl with different agenda's which even our intelligence agencies have warned us from.
