London, April 02: Declaring that India was the new global power, US President Barack Obama said the country is a critical player on the world stage. Obama was speaking after he had his first meeting with PM Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the G-20 summit here on Thursday.

He said the US sees India as a global partner and together the two countries can play a critical part in meeting the challenges of the 21st century, he said at the end of a lively one-on-one meeting with Singh.

“Singh has unleashed India’s economic power in the world. He is largely responsible for the rise of India,” Obama noted.

PM Manmohan Singh returned the US president;s compliments by saying India greatly admires Obama.

Singh referred to strategic relationship that had developed between the two countries during the last five years and India wanted to carry this forward.

"Under your leadership we will face challenges such as climate change," the Prime Minister told Obama

Conveying India's keenness to carry forward the Indo-US strategic relationship that has developed over the last five years, Singh told Obama that India and the US shared "same dreams and same vision" and the two countries would like to work together to realise those dreams.

Singh said he would like to invite Obama to India where a warm welcome awaits you. Obama, inturn, invited Singh to the US.

During the talks, Manmohan Singh made it clear that Pakistan must show absolute sincerity in bringing the perpetrators of the Mumbai attack to book before the talks can be resumed between the two countries.

"We discussed development in Afghanistan and Pakistan. We both agreed that our two countries must work together to counter the forces of terror," Manmohan Singh replied when asked about his first meeting with President Obama on the sidelines of the G20 summit here.

"We have a global strategic partnership with the US. We both have agreed that there are enormous opportunities to strengthen this relationship and to make it more productive and durable."

He described the discussion as "useful and productive" that focused on development of bilateral relations and how problems of the region can be resolved by interaction between the two countries.

Apart from the global financial meltdown, the two leaders discussed an entire array of bilateral, regional and global issues, including terrorism, energy security, climate change and the situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"We did discuss the issue of terrorism - we discussed it not simply in terms of terrorism emanating from Pakistan, although obviously we are very concerned about extremists and terrorists who have made camp in the border regions of Pakistan, as well as in Afghanistan," Obama said at a press conference.

"But we spoke about it more cooperatively, in terms of how we can coordinate effectively on issues of counter terrorism."

"We also spoke about the fact that in a nuclear age, at a time when perhaps the greatest enemy of both India and Pakistan should be poverty, it may make sense to create a more effective dialogue between India and Pakistan," the American leader added.

With developments in Pakistan and Afghanistan figuring prominently in the discussions, Manmohan Singh made it clear that Pakistan must show absolute sincerity in bringing the perpetrators of the Mumbai attack to book before the talks can be resumed between the two countries.

Here's from Britain

London: India is already a superpower, says Britain's Foreign Secretary David Miliband.

"My thoughts on the 60th anniversary of the Indian Constitution is that in one particular way India is a superpower already," Miliband told a massive gathering of the Indian diaspora here Tuesday.

"India is a superpower in its soft power, a superpower in the soft force of its democracy, and superpower in its intellectual advance and a super poser in the world of business," said Miliband, standing in for Prime Minister Gordon Brown at a celebration of the 61st Republic Day.

"Six hundred thousand qualified engineers emerge form India's tertiary education every year. Just think of the remarkable breakthrough of (2009 chemistry Nobel laureate) Prof Venkatraman Ramakrishnan in fighting bacterial infections."

Miliband's comments were greeted with loud applause from the gathered hundreds of Indian-origin leaders at the celebration at London's Grosvenor Hotel.

They included leaders from the worlds of business, politics, charities and the arts as well as major British politicians and Indian guests, including Minister for Surface Transport Kamal Nath, industrialist Mukesh Ambani, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Chairperson of the Hindustan Times Group Shobhana Bhartia and broadcaster Barkha Dutt.

"Who would have thought that India is now a greater investor in Britain than Britain would be in India, as a tribute to your success," said Miliband.

The British foreign minister said India is also a "superpower in the world of culture".

"I say this with some sense of regret that the Indian Premier League is so successful that England's greatest cricketers want to appear in the IPL rather than play for England.

"That's an example of India's soft power," he said, borrowing a phrase from Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor.

Miliband said India was leading the way in the global search for an "inclusive form of development", marked by environmental sustainability, cultural tolerance and "a politically liberal model".

"This search is made more possible by the remarkable modernisation that is taking place in India today. India's progress shows that modernisation can be distinctive.

"The modern march to independence has now been matched by the modern march to prosperity and the modern march to justice."

The dinner at the Grosvenor capped a day of Republic Day events, including a presentation on India's economy by Ahluwalia and a panel discussion at the London School of Economics chaired by Dutt for the launch of Rajya Sabha MP NK Singh's book "Not By Reason Alone: The Politics of Change".

Britain anoints India a superpower on Republic Day

"India is a superpower in its soft power, a superpower in the soft force of its democracy, and superpower in its intellectual advance and a super poser in the world of business," said Miliband, standing in for Prime Minister Gordon Brown at a celebration of the 61st Republic Day.

Miliband is trying to make up for the diplomatic disaster he created by mentioning the K-word in his last visit to India.

The British foreign minister said India is also a "superpower in the world of culture".

If its superpower in terms of softpower, it would be USA

India has softpower of course, though far behind USA.

But each time i hear the term superpower and India used in the same sentence,i still   as it never gets old.

India should not aim to be a damn superpower.. This is so dumb.. And if USA is the model of a superpower, India is not even close.

Dude, when you are surrounded by nations like China and Pakistan, you need to aim high.
Leave Pakistan,it can be handled, but to handle China, you need to aim high.
Cuz if we don't we would be sitting in US,UK,Canada,Aus.
Just like you!
And leave our nations at the mercy of others.

Big dreams lead to big steps.

And after all,not all people are like you, living in other nations and not dreaming/thinking high about its motherland.

All you need is a good life for yourself!

":lol::rofl:"

I had dreams of entering politics, working for a dream, that you know.
But when i see people like you with " " on the dreams.
I sometimes wonder,if i will succeed.

You might not take it seriously, but i am serious.

Well,its my personal dream??
Nonetheless..

I am just 22 and my spirits are already down, talking to people like you.

I know,the reality is that India isn't a superpower yet(well if China isn't,then India ofc can't be)

But my thread title is "closing towards being a SP"
And i don't think that its a wet dream.
It's a reality that has been endorsed by many leaders in the world.
But sadly, some people of the very same nation do not believe in the same notion.

India doesn't need to be a superpower to fight a successful war.

Is India rapidly closing towards being a SuperPower ?

yes, but not rapidly. ...Its growing with good pace.
first we should aim to be developed completely and eradicate issues like poverty and social taboos like honour killings and dowry.... then comes superpower.
