What's new

Is India going for F-35 instead of F-16 or F/A-18?

This is a different deal under 'Make in India' program. Rafale deal is done. India will get around 36 Rafale fighter with an option to get 18 more.
What do you think America will allow to transfer 5th gen technology to India..??
No way that doesn't make sense..!!

. .
The Americans haven't offered the F 35, this question is speculative to the extreme. As of now, it will either be the Gripen or the latest model F16.

. . . .
You're telling me that India will induct French, American and Russian fighter aircraft all at the same time spending around $10 billion on each deal?
Certainly if we are offered that fighter and the price is reasonable (say $100 mil to $120 mil) because the original requirement was 126, not 36. This 36 purchase is a temporary thing.

.
Each Rafale cost around $250 million. India is looking at something with in $100 million, a single engine fighter.
f35a's will set you back about$95 million which is just for the plane your looking at another 90 odd million for a long term maintenance program.
i cant imagine Lockheed building the critical parts in india and you can forget about the ram coatings and the f135 engines.

I agree on that...that is why I think F16 is the possible option.

The Russian deal will cost a lot more and won't be here for a little while longer but about $10 billion on another single engined fighter is a reasonable figure.

Can you not remember India rejecting the American and the Russian aircrafts over the French?

Yes...at present that is what it seems...F16 or Gripen / Rafale /PAK FA

That is for MMRCA....This is a different deal. This new deal has no link to MMRCA, and Rafale is not in competition.

No it is not as it took India nearly a decade to cough up that amount for the Rafales.

That tender was cancelled, as it stands the French have an order & India wants another single engined aircraft.

F35 is a speculation...may be at latter point India may acquire. The main competitors for this new deal is F18/F16/Gripen.
