What's new

Is decades old LCA Tejas a 4.5 generation fighter as claimed by IAF ?

.
FBW, BVR, Precision ground strike, IFR, partial composites & ECM
Both LCA MK1 and JF-17 Block-1&2 are 4 gen (Western definition)

HOBS, AESA, IRST, Advanced datalink and High TWR
Except supercruise both LCA MK2 and JF-17 Block-3 intended to have capabilities of 4.5 gen (Western definition).

Chinese definition is -1 so if 4th gen in west, it will be classified 3rd gen in China.

However neither of them are flying or operational right now so nothing more to discuss on 4+ gen status.

Whether it is 4 th GEN or 4.5 GEN is a matter of one's opinion

The IMPORTANT point is How it measures upto when compared to its Rival JF 17

Same same, although the JF-17 is cheaper and is being developed at a faster rate, thanks to the dragon up north.

It is a 4.5 gen fighter because it is a decade old.... The design changed constantly so as to adapt to the latest techs....

on topic; a fighter that has basic maintenance and logistic shortcomings and is as of yet not able to exploit its full envelope both in terms of manoeuvrability and in avionics/systems; can be a 5th generation fighter for all the world cares.. it is a lame duck.

For that, blame India and Indians with their piss poor project management; not the LCA. It is a fine fighter with a fine concept that their bureaucracy and air force have been forcing into failure. A failure that is now almost guaranteed if not for a few fighting for its survival.

Tejas the fighter may be a good product at the end of the day, LCA the program is an utter failure.

then you dont know HAL and their Project management.

I know it rather well. Considering the MKI's with failing systems, the Migs that had maintenance issues that had IAF personnel running back after FCFs with tons of complaints. The issue is your babus - both in and out of the military are the greatest threat to your fighting force.

Did IAF claim Tejas to be 4.5 generation fighter in first place?

exactly. they are a bunch of most lazy bums walking on gods green earth. I joined it as management trainee for a brief tenure during my MBA days. The atmosphere was shocking and after 4 PM hardly any one was doing any work!! my reporting manager proudly shown me a project ( cant give details) which was initiated since 20 years and was still running. Mind it project was for internal use and they can not blame any external factors.

To all my fellow countrymen, you have to be objective and realistic.

LCA is made up of more composites and has better western avionics. If it has some stealth features such as special RAM coating and/or electronic stealth and can supercruise then it is absolutely 4.5 gen. If it lacks some of those features but is on the path to getting the, alone with the AESA Radar then it will definately be a 4.5 gen fighter. With some of the best avionics and weapons on this platform, it would be stupid to disregard this serious challenge.

I am hoping that JF-17 would also be upgraded to atleast 4.5 gen and I hope that it happens ahead of LCA. However, they have access to all the technology in the world, US, French, British, German, Israeli etc.,

In any case, even in current state LCA is atleast 4 gen.

This is the most sensible post in this entire thread.

That is a direct inheritance of the Brits. They being the "Raj" that they were; would take their breaks for tea and generally left any actual work for later. They had little interest in the welfare of the common Indian and were essentially there to pass their time until they got to return to blightey. But if desis took on this culture of rulers in their work ethics then they deserve the string of failures and humiliations that their government projects suffer. While there have been massive improvement in the private sector; that has to do with the leadership in the private sector having to force such work ethics due to competition; what competition is there in HAL or the Gurdaspur Public works organisation?

That is not to say that other countries besides the subcontinent dont suffer the government rot and laziness, but see the work ethic of the some developed nations in the government sector.
