There is only a national Kitty because of the Services - no services, no kitty, and that's why no amount of money is any kind of measure for the sacrifice that is service. Laws for human beings, not human beings for laws.

yeh it is banned all over Pakistan its just that you can get alchohol easily even in a conservative city like Peshawar :)

So no one gets sleepless even if its banned.

Yes, that seems on the money to me; it does not help rather it does as you have suggested, it criminalizes a otherwise personal choice and makes it more expensive.

For me it is the idea of criminalizing a personal choice that is really problematic - it is part of the same thinking that seeks to make automatons of Majority Muslims, for instance you may not realize it but, increasing numbers of persons began identifying themselves as Shi'ah muslims so as to no allow the govt to deduct "Muslim taxes" (zakat) from their accounts, similarly gettinga divorce is easier if you should denounce and give up Islam and declare yourself a Christian -- the law of unintended consequences? Or is it exactly what they had in mind?? Social engineering anyone? make mine a double.:pakistan:

Yeah, says who?
If any thing, it is an issue though not a very serious one in the whole society. The Indian experience has been that banning never helps. Wherever prohibition has existed, it has failed. The rich have still managed to get their qouta while the poor have died in hordes of drinking spurious liquour and the smugglers have got richer. The only way to combat alcoholism is education and not a ban.

It was banned during Gen Zia era.

It was actually banned during Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's time... at the same time he had banned gambling and horse racing, and also declared Friday as a weekly holiday.
