I can't speak for the US public. But I agree that he should have just been fined or given a 1 year sentence, which was then suspended, and he put on probation for one year of good behavior.

I agree three years behind bars is a bit much. The reaction to the incident here in Texas was mixed; some people were outraged others had a good laugh over it.
