Iraqi conjoined twins succesfully operated in KSA

Two conjoined Iraqi infants were successfully separated through an operation performed by a 23-member, multidisciplinary team headed by Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah on Thursday.
Christ and Christian were born conjoined from their breastbone to their abdomen. They also shared a liver and an intestinal tract.
The surgery took five hours, beginning at 8:15 a.m. at King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC) and ending at 1:15 p.m.
The surgical team held several meetings and carried out medical examinations on the twins prior to the surgery.
Al-Rabeeah, who had the twins put in two separate beds at the intensive care unit of the pediatric ward at KAMC, expressed happiness that the operation was a success at the end of the intervention.
“Their oxygen masks have also been removed,” said one official.
Their parents and elder sister were present at the hospital when the twins were taken to the operation theater.
“The timely intervention of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah allowed several conjoined twins from 16 countries to lead a normal life following surgical interventions in the Kingdom,” said Al-Rabeeah in an earlier statement.
Conjoined twins are separated free-of-charge at the King Abdulaziz Medical City, National Guard Health Affairs in Riyadh upon directives issued by the king.
Travel expenses for the twins and their parents are covered by the Saudi government. In addition, accommodation costs are covered by hospital authorities until the twins are discharged.

It must be strange to be a conjoined twin.

The strangest of them all are craniopagus conjoined twins, which means twins who are joined at and share their brains. Some of them see through each other's eyes, and many of them experience physical sensations of the other, and some of them even share many aspects of consious thought. That is just way too weird to grasp - that they share their mind, or at least many aspects of it.

Legend says that their father,'Abd Manaf ibn Qusai, separated his conjoined sons with a sword and that some priests believed that the blood that had flown between them signified wars between their progeny (confrontations did occur between Banu al'Abbas and Banu Ummaya ibn 'Abd Shams in the year 750 AH).[1]

The Iraqi parents of conjoined twins separated through surgery in Riyadh on Thursday have expressed their deep appreciation to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah of his generosity in ordering the surgery.
“We are very thankful to the king for his noble gesture,” the parents said.
King Adbullah issued directives for the surgery to be conducted on Christ and Christian in Riyadh at the King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC) on a request from the parents.
The twins underwent an operation to separate them from their lower chest and abdomen, which was performed over six phases. The surgery lasted six hours and 40 minutes.
This is the 32nd such surgery, performed by a 23-member, multidisciplinary team headed by Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah.
“The Kingdom has helped conjoined twins from 16 countries to lead normal lives following separation surgeries conducted in the Kingdom,” he said.
Conjoined twins are separated free of charge at the King Abdulaziz Medical City, National Guard Health Affairs in Riyadh on directives issued by King Abdullah.
Travel expenses for the twins and their parents are covered by the Saudi government. In addition, accommodation costs are covered by hospital authorities until the twins are discharged.
The Kingdom has conducted surgeries on conjoined twins from Sudan, Yemen, Egypt, Malaysia, the Philippines, Poland, Morocco and Iraq.
Christ and Christian are in stable condition and all their vital organs and systems are working normally, according to Al-Rabeeah. “The twins are completely alert and interacting with their parents and staff, like other three-month-old babies.”
Al-Rabeeah indicated that the twins would probably be fed orally over the next couple of days.
