ISLAMABAD - An Iraqi defense delegation has arrived in Pakistan seeking to improve defense cooperation between the two countries. Led by Maj. Gen. Abbas Mohammed Fizaa, the Iraqi Army's director of military training, the five-man delegation conducted a number of discussions with Pakistani defense officials.

Pakistani officials are believed to have offered a wide-ranging military training program for Iraqi servicemen in Pakistani military training establishments. Such arrangements are already in place to train military personnel from a number of countries Pakistan has traditionally had close relations with, but not with Iraq. The Iraqi Army under Saddam Hussein traditionally had a closer relationship with India than with Pakistan.

Pakistan, however, has very close defense relations with other Arab states in the Gulf region, and it will be keen to deepen its relationship with Iraq. However, no comment from the secretary of defense's office was forthcoming about the details of what was discussed.

Though Pakistan is well-placed to provide military training, it will be eager to capitalize on the small number of defense deals that have already been made.

Pakistan has since 2005 supplied Iraq with a large number of small arms and ammunition, Talha tracked armored personnel carriers (APCs) and Mohafiz internal-security vehicles. There has been no further large-scale military cooperation between the two countries since then, but the Iraqi Army has a current requirement for ammunition of different calibers and for mortars.

To date, such items have been the staple exports of the Pakistani defense industry, but Pakistan is keen to also export larger products and is hoping increased cooperation will lead to further orders from the Iraqis, such as for APCs and possibly tanks.

before making any close ties with this country and specially defense one should always remember that it was not only israel-indian axix involved in zia's plane crash
but in fact iragi agency itself also played a very important role in this incident

.
Why not lets forget the past and move on.. the whole military of iraq has changed and by approaching Pakistan they are now respecting it.

.
provided their strategic goals are clear that they are allies for Pakitan and its allies , sure why not infact we should also buy oil from iraq at discount rates:pakistan:

. .
why do you want to ruin it altogether

How the defense cooperation and oil import from Iraq will ruin everything, there is a new iraqi government and and Pakistan need to expand it's defense relations with more countries around the globe. I think iraq will be a good export market.:pop:

Good Free oil for defense ties and Bargains..Great business everyone gets happy any one agree with me??

:no::no::no::no::no::no:

Noway I would agree with you. Just having a free oil for something valuable in export by Pak doesn't get you anything valuable.

You should count upon sustainable cooperation between the two nation, and Pak should take the matter forward for the rebuilding of war torn nation.

.
Yep so there is great risk involved in dealing with Iraqis!@Avian

.
apart from oil relation there is no possibility of any defense ties with iraq
,i mean what iraq can benefit pakistan in defense relationship

. .
ofcourse,it would benefit Pakistan by providing an export market and at this moment we are not a defence exporter like USA or Russia to consider ignoring small markets and also about Iraq's involvement in Zia case, back then it was Saddam Hussain and Iraq was a puppet and in his hands and now he's gone and Iraq is just another Gulf and Muslim country which seeks help.

Iraq is a Huge market for JF-17 Thunder if our Brass take it seriously.

NOT AT ALL! the US is not going to sleep around doing nothing. the US will strike a deal of selling the F-16s in return for ofcourse oil! this will give US the oil it needs as well as the production line of the F-16s will continuew further for a couple more years to come! :coffee:

the only countries that might buy the JF are countries that are not on good terms with the US. or are 3rd world countries that US doesn't care about like Myanmar,Bhutan,Mongolia etc

.
yes iraq and saddam was whore of india in past but not now hope that pakistan provide them with best avaialable weapons.
