The priorities for Iraq have changed now that it’s most pressing concerns of ISIS are quelled. Prior to the rise of ISIS in terms of land holdings, Iraq was in negotiations with Russia for S300 air defense systems. Iraq had already signed a deal and received deliveries of Mi-35 and Mi-28 Night Hunter helicopters, Pantsir S-1 short-range air defense systems and a variety of other deals. However in a landmark 4.7 billion dollar deal between Iraq and Russia there was several items that were put on hold such as the T90 tanks and BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles. Due to budget constraints the money was diverted to more immediate needs against ISIS putting on hold a lot of purchases.

Recently we saw the delivery of the T90 tanks into Iraq from Russia and in the next few weeks the BMP-3 fighting vehicles. What was not singed for but talked about however was the S300 and today Al Sura can confirm Iraq has sent a delegation to discuss a sale of the S400 air defense system. An upgrade from the S300 originally discussed as Iraq wants to keep up with it’s neighbors air defense systems and also ensure maximum protection given Iraq’s minimal air to air strength with much of it’s airforce tailored to precision air to ground strikes.

What else is on the table? Iraqi requests continue with the desire to expand the Iraqi airforce by 2020 to have a fleet of Russian jet fighters for interception and air defense purposes while maintaining the American F16 fleet for predominately precision strikes as well as air defense. The US has limited Iraq’s air to air capabilities on the Block 52 F16 fleet to only AIM-9 missiles which are short range, Iraq requires a long range missile to match it’s neighbors. Russia however is in the process of moving towards Mig-35 production and this may be what Iraq is waiting for in large order volumes as the Mig-35 is tailored to interception missions, it’s expected time to service is 2018 with the export model offered to Iraq.

The growth of the Iraqi military is tantamount to it’s protection as the war on ISIS has shown. Initially Iraq was facing heavy issues in both manpower, equipment and lack of air force but after the 4 year war Iraq has grown considerably in both local training and equipment. The rehabilitation of Iraq requires a capable military, the additional security and reliability of the state has been a key point discussed by investors looking to build in Iraq.

S400 hai ya Candies. Har koi mang raha hai mujhe bhi do mujhe bhi do.

Iraw dont even have a single conventional threat right now. What will you do with S400 SAMs

.
Lol, They still haven't learnt their lessons. Russian weapons let them down badly in all the gulf wars. They shouldn't put their eggs in one basket as they end up being conquered again.

Do you buy military hardware before or during a military threat?

You buy before. Iraq has zero capacity to defend its airspace and now that ISIS is gone it can focus on building it's air defense for the future. You don't build a military with the expectation of a particular enemy, you build your army to prepare for any possible threat.

I disagree, the weakness makes other states exploit it. Iraq is in the center of the middle east which is the worst place there is with threats in every direction. Establishing air defense / ability to enforce airspace control is basic defense capability, nothing like Iraq in the past building missiles and arming itself with 6000 tanks. It's normal.

A lot more should be acquired, the air force needs between 96 to 196 modern fighter jets per previous estimates by the air force general.

Iraq doesn't have it's eggs in one basket. It operates eastern and western technologies at the same time. Did you even read the article?

Explain your self, where in the article does it say Iraq is diversifying it's procurement of weapons?
Fools don't learn from their mistakes. After losing over a million people I think you should keep your mouth shut and learn how to defend yourself properly. Russia helped destroy your country and it is unbelievable you are buying weapons from them. Learn to make your own, else you may suffer even a bigger disaster next time.

Then who to buy from, by that logic we can't buy it from the US or Europe either as they helped destroy our country.
Trying to be smart yet using such illogical reasoning, didn't work

What Iraq should do is get a mix of European and Russia jets like what Egypt does. Rafale and MiG-35. But no American planes. Americans always try to control other people. Bad.

Since you didn't read very far into the article.

" Iraqi requests continue with the desire to expand the Iraqi airforce by 2020 to have a fleet of Russian jet fighters for interception and air defense purposes while maintaining the American F16 fleet for predominately precision strikes as well as air defense."

Iraq will have Russian jets and American jets. You're awfully insulting for someone that isn't really talking much sense lol.

My understanding of this is that Iraq keeps USAF F16s with USAF pilots: "maintaining the American F16 fleet for predominately precision strikes as well as air defense".

Rafale is expensive, budget constraints have to be taken into account. A large fleet is also costly to maintain and Iraq won't be able to come on par with GCC air forces, Iraq doesn't have the same oil wealth and other economic sectors remain nearly non existant.

Building an effective SAM network for aerial defense is likely more cost-effective than a large fleet. They'll likely go for MIG-35, or SU-30.

Iraqi pilots, Iraqi air force F-16's which were made in America, same situation with PAF F-16's.

This S-400 offer is again being negotiated with Russia at the moment, personally I think it's a big waste of money given the high risk they might be destroyed by drones which are hard to detect. We are talking 5-7 billion USD.

.
Iraq has a long way to go. It’s evident that the US won’t benefit us all that much. We’re better off making strategic agreements with Turkey, Russian, Iran, South Korea....

US military hardware is extremely expensive both to purchase and maintain. The Arab Gulf countries have spent over a trillion dollars and yet still depend on the US for protection. Look as KSA, they spend tens of billions a year not because they need it, but to keep the US happy.

Iraq needs to get some sort of deal with Iran, Turkey, South Korea to locally produce inexpensive ballistic missiles, ATGM’s, short range missiles, UAV’s, police and army vehicles and trucks.

Keep Russia for the more advanced personal carriers, fighter jets and helicopters, air defence systems.

Sounds like a dream but that’s the only way Iraq could gets its military might back.

We could still maintain and expand the fleet of F16s and Abrams tanks. But in my opinion turn all the older tanks into personal carriers with cannons or bigger guns and get in partnership with Russia to Acquire the Armata with the necessary modifications in the next ten years.

Russian weapons didnt let Iraq down. Poor Iraqi training, weapons maintenance and parts probably did them in. Everyone knows Saddam's army was toothless tiger from lack of adaption to long term weapons embargo on Iraq.
