Russian energy group Gazprom is determined to expand its presence in the Middle East as the company has said it is in exclusive talks to buy liquefied natural gas from oil fields off Israel’s coast on the same day its oil arm announced it has obtained an 80 percent stake in the Kurdish region of Iraq.

Russia’s Gazprom Neft, the oil arm of gas giant Gazprom, has acquired an 80 percent stake in the Halabja block of northern Iraq, the company’s deputy CEO Vadim Yakovlev said Feb. 26.

Gazprom Neft has already been conducting business with the central Iraqi government, operating in the Badra field. Baghdad considers deals with the Kurdistan Regional Government illegal but the company does not expect its Kurdish expansion to negatively affect its relations with the central government.

Under the deal with the KRG, which holds the other 20 percent of the field, Gazprom Neft will operate the Halabja project, which envisages a seven-year exploration phase after which the license could be extended for a 25-year production period, Yakovlev said.

The Halabja deal is Gazprom Neft’s third production-sharing agreement in Kurdistan.

Although the Russian company was warned by Baghdad in January to choose between selling its Badra stake or relinquishing the Kurdish deals, the company executive said they expected support from Baghdad, during his statements on Feb. 26.

What has this news anything to do with Iran or Jordan?
Provide a better article related to title or thread will be closed.

I think it should be deleted. So what that Jordan and Iraq are making a pipeline? Good for them, doesn't have anything to do with Iran, since Iran is not between Jordan and Iraq on a map.

.
This is related to Iran because this project will decrease influence of Iran, which is important for us.

And I didn't pick the title myself but it is the original title of the article.

Long-story short, it is related to Iran.

.
era, you should close this thread. i don't see any source, and the title is misleading. It has nothing to do with Iran, and even if it did; iran is controlling iraq.

It is a propaganda piece from one of these small, insignificant Turkish newspapers. Hurriyet I think.

indeed. hahah, those idiots think that 1) iraq is counterinfluencing iran, and that 2) gazprom (russia) is a better party than iran, while russians, especially on energy, are anti-turks. you should never trust turkish intellect. you have to come to my country to see the results.
