Interestingly Imam Gazali, hasan bin Saba *(founder of Assassins), and Omar Khiyyam all three were friends and students of the same Teacher (cannot recall his name right now, also a very well known person in history)

Imam Gazali did try to take on the order of Assassins, but failed...Khiyyam and Gazali remained in contact... but Hasan left, and spent rest of his life in his fort, some say 50 years or so...and was seen only once... no one actually knew if he existed there for how long or was he living there...

Assassins killed many prominent scholars and personalities over the half century, later their order was taken down by Sallahudheen...

Everything you said was right except that his base was in Alamut and that the Mongols destroyed the order.
