Signs are emerging that show the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) – the Russia-led single market – is seeking deeper links with Iran after the re-election of President Hassan Rouhani.

Timur Suleimenov, Kazakhstan’s minister of economy, has been quoted by media as saying that the EEU would conclude discussions with Iran over the country’s membership to the Union by the end of 2017.

“We believe we can come up with something substantial by the end of the year . . . finished talks,” Suleimenov told the Financial Times.

“We would like to have a framework signed then,” he added.

Suleimenov became minister in December after previously working as the minister in charge of economy and financial policy at the EEU Commission in Moscow.

Reaching a deal on free trade would represent a notable victory for the nascent EEU — a single market of Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia set up in 2015 — and mark a significant strengthening of relations between Iran and the former Soviet republics, the report added.

The EEU’s prime ministers resolved in March to make talks with Tehran a priority, scenting an opportunity to expand beyond the bloc’s combined market of 183 million people.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said last August that Moscow wanted Iran to join the EEU – a move that was seen as crucial in bringing the two countries closer in their plans to form a strategic partnership.

Putin emphasized that a research had already started overt the possibility of creating a free-trade zone between Iran and the EEU.

“Iran is Russia’s longtime partner. We believe that bilateral relations will benefit from the reduction of tensions around Iran following the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear program,” Putin was quoted by the media as saying.

This is great news! Thanks for sharing. Any plans to dump USD and trade in local currencies.

By the way have you heard anything new regarding SCO and Iran's membership?

After Pakistan becoming full member of SCO the SCO no longer has any potential to resolve or growth or combating terrorisom, or the security issues. so basically it just organization that two members on top will define it policies and other members jump on each other back.
For India to be full member of SCO there is logical and economic understanding which can poll it weight.

so what you going to see in future is that Iran no longer try to become full member because it is pointless and Iran and Russia corporation and direct closer dealings out side of SCO and new orgenation which already formed between all former solvate union countries, Russia and Iran and west Asian countries ( also known as Middle east ) with countries which have potential like India.

as you can see China is adapting to this reality by signing strategic pack with other members of SCO out side of SCO , like the CEPC which is undergoing with Pakistan

This is what future looks if we looking at now

That's the latest news about dumping the dollar, but it's a long process, its not that simple, it will need a lot of political will by Iran and Russia, so we will see how the things go.

As for the SCO, IMO it's only a matter of time for Iran to join. But SCO must reform itself. With India and Pakistan in, its becoming a huge organisation with massive potential, but need some reforms to fulfill it.
The cooperation in SCO should deepen on every possible field, especially such as culture, political, economic, military etc.But as you know it will be harder with India and Pakistan in it, everyone know that they have some problems, its kind of the same for India and China, so we will see how the things will go.
But I think that SCO can help for the improvment of the relationship between Iran and Pakistan.Russia and China can play as a mediator if needed.
I think @TaiShang and @Sinopakfriend should have a word here.

Dear Friend,

First allow me to thank you for the tag and considering me worthy of input. Truly great hearted!

Eurasia must be seen first and far most as a Civlisation Space... we need to go deeper than the Heartland Thesis...when we can percieve this then our understanding of developing dynamics in geostrategy can become perhaps a bit more solid.

Ancient Persia was a world in itself...its influence in architecutre, music and language still can been seen in the Central Asia...and of course the interaction with the Middle Kingdom...and the Slavs...Rus.

The SCO is not uni-dimensional enterprise... since, it is beginning it has been a very loosely defined organisation...allowing it to evolve with time. Herein also you will find the thought processes of Eurasian thinking.

So we can never allow ourselves to see SCO as a security construct to counter NATO. The SCO must be seen with multidimensional view points. This makes it vastly interesting and in a typical Sino-Rus manner flexible...

Inclusion of Iran is a question of time...and that is a fact. It would be a stablising thing and will give all Eurasian actors some breathing space from the empire... Iran in particular. I am for Iran's inclusion.

Regarding, Pak... Pak has its historic, civilisational and to some extent (very minor) genetic connection to Central Asia. Let us not forget the two great cities of CA and the famouse Sufis from there... Pak also has 1000s years old relationship with Iran and China... I am talking about Indus Valley times to about present day Pak.

The current spat or friction between Iran and Pak is the result of players near and far... Hopefully, wisdom pervails and Iran sides with Pak in these difficult times... especially through CPEC.

India is neither in nor out of SCO. Contrary to common perception both China and Russia wanted to have indians in SCO. And not this nonsense of Russians wanted to have indians in SCO to counter balance China.

Sino-Rus relationship is truly quite symobiotic. Win-Win in truest sense.

Given current indian orientation towards the empire and open opposition to OBOR... I see a less constructive india in the near future. So, SCO might be nothing more than photo ops for india just like BRICS. As you have seen india is already in opposing camp to counter OBOR...

Perhaps in the long term indians might become constructive and join the EEU+SCO withl open mind.

Too early to tell really... but Eurasian Civilisational revival is a good thing... might take a generaton or two..however, it is about time that this happens.

We are entering a complex world... everything in the global power architecture is in flux..and the multipolar world is just emerging...so let us not call it a victory just yet.

Long road to freedom!

A fair and just FTA between SCO/EEU members will bind the shared prosperity of the people...and hence, shared security as well.

I would welcome the Ancient Wisdom from Ural Mountains to Taoist Temples to Sufis Sages to Persian Thought to Spirit of Indus all merge and create a new Ethos of tolerance, respect and joy in existence. Secterian divides or religious strife is a modern construct which benefits certain players. Mr. Putin, of late, is coming out with guns blazing...

SCO can achieve this...but again long road to freedom. First we need to eliminate terror and their creators...

Iran-Pak are the Gates Keepers and Stakeholders of Eurasia...as is Turkey...but then that is different tale for another time.

Stay blessed!

SPF

PS. Sorry for rather long and boring response... but then you asked for it!

SCO is over

I thought this was relevant to the discussion:

China says Iran membership of Shanghai security bloc to be discussed at summit
BEIJING (Reuters) - China supports Iran's membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) security bloc, jointly led by China and Russia, and the subject will be discussed at the group's summit this week, a senior diplomat said on Monday.
The SCO refused to initiate Iran's accession last year despite a request from Russia which backs Tehran's bid, indicating possible divisions between Beijing and Moscow.
Iran has long knocked at SCO's door and Russia has argued that with Western sanctions against Tehran lifted, it could finally become a member of the bloc which also includes four ex-Soviet Central Asian republics.
Assistant Chinese Foreign Minister Li Huilai said Iran is an observer at the SCO and has for a long time "proactively participated" in its activities and has made positive contributions to the SCO's development.
"China highly appraises this. China welcomes and supports Iran's wish to become a formal member of the SCO," he told reporters, ahead of the summit in Kazakh capital Astana which President Xi Jinping will attend.
"I think that at this meeting all sides will continue to conscientiously study the issue of Iran becoming a member on the basis of the SCO's relevant rules and consensus through consultations."
China has close economic and diplomatic ties with Tehran, and was also instrumental in pushing through a landmark 2015 deal to curb Iran's nuclear program.
Li said that Pakistan and India will formally join the bloc as members at the summit, saying that the grouping's attraction to others and its influence continues to grow.
"More and more countries have said they hope to become dialogue partners, observers or formal members of the SCO. China welcomes countries who want to and who meet the conditions to apply to become members, observers or dialogue partners."
China said in November it was willing to consider any application from NATO-member Turkey to join the SCO, after Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said his country could join.
China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan formed the SCO in 2001 to fight threats posed by radical Islam and drug trafficking from neighboring Afghanistan.

Couldn't be further from geo political reality. Pakistan is and will be key parameter for SCO, EEU and OBOR. Pakistan had been addressing terror issues BUT it takes time when a country was made a staging point for multiple terrorist orchestrators; namely india, US, Afghanistan and offcourse who can forget Saudi Arab and UAE.
Besides, indians using Iran as orchestration point for their terror activities in Baluchistan does not help the situation.

So, Iran has cooperate more with intel and prevent india using Iran as launching pad and be patients.
