Fighting broke out between a group of Asian migrants on the Greek island of Kos today.

Riot police did nothing as 50 asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran threw rocks and exchanged blows near a passenger ship where hundreds of migrants were being registered.

Hundreds of Asian migrants were stood near the police station when the brawl broke out, possibly because they have little chance of being processed on the Eleftherios Venizelos.

The Greek authorities are giving priority to Syrians. They are treated as refugees because they are fleeing their country's bitter civil war and therefore have greater rights under international law than economic migrants.

News of the outbreak in Kos comes as experts claim nearly 250,000 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean into Europe this year and that number will top quarter-of-a-million by the end of the month.

Rival chants of 'Pakistan', 'Afghanistan' and 'Iran' were heard on the quayside as the brawl erupted. At least one migrant was kicked to the ground and others wandered the streets with blood on their faces following the fight.

Other members of the crowd - including 300 Syrians who were waiting to be processed - moved into the shade as the fighting continued for several minutes.

The riot police officers, who were drafted in earlier this week to reinforce local officers, watched from the sidelines.

'We didn't intervene because our priority is to protect the police station,' one riot policeman said.

They later used their batons to beat back a large crowd of Iranian refugees who attempted to break the police line which was blocking the entrance to the police station.

Meanwhile, migrants continue to arrive from the Turkish mainland, which lies within sight of Kos. The coast guard has rescued 212 people from four dinghies on the island's north-eastern coast.

What a lovely site....They leave their countries, they start fighting on the doorsteps of Europe (disgracing themselves), and they have the nerve to chant the names of the countries they abandoned. Oh the irony....

There is a video link in the article with the crowd chanting "Iran, Iran, Iran Akbar, Iran Akbar".

Real Iranians would mock such people.

Man...69 years since the creation of Pakistan and the country sucks so bad that every other day you hear stories about Pakistani migrants seeking asylum or trying to cross the border illegally. Just a couple of days back I was reading the news that there has been a record number of increase in asylum seeker applications from Pakistani nationals to Ireland.

14th August my @ss...only a fool would celebrate the "joyous" occasion.

Do you really think the British were doing such an awesome job governing India and Pakistan prior to 1947 that independence wasn't worth it?

Whats with the casual attitude of the people standing behind the railing lol, heck I think the blond girl might even be cheering them on :o:

No. The fault is with Pakistan itself...it just sucks.

India got their independence too and they are miles ahead of Pakistan. It makes sense to take pride in your independence when you've security, respect, and food.

This is how much some pakistanis are doing to escape the heaven where there's shariah and to enter the immoral hell called Europe. And once they are in Europe they just can't let a day go off without turning Europe into the same shariah heaven that they wanted to escape from so badly. Don't see the logic here.

Majority of the Pakistanis I have seen here in Europe are into collecting funds for the mosque or for some other Islamic purposes while living on government or community welfare. And of course...they're full time members of the moral/shariah brigade No wonder the moment you tell someone you're from Pakistan the atmosphere changes.

The only reason the European governments tolerate them is because they need someone to do the most menial of chores.

I agree - our leadership has failed us, and I can't say the primary responsibility for that is on the Pakistani public (for electing them) because in a sense Pakistanis really only started understanding and exercising their democratic responsibilities in 2008.

Military rule has retarded Pakistan's evolution as a democratic nation, there is no question about that. India went through many similar issues and has managed to work out the kinks to some degree over 60+ years. In contrast Pakistan has had to keep restarting the process, and this time around we've been at it for just 7 years. In addition we have to overcome the legacy of past military rule and the still present, albeit diminished, threat of a future military coup which will play into how our politicians and electorate think and function. A politician will only think short term if he/she knows they will be kicked out by the Military/undemocratically, and therefore focus on self-preservation and wealth accumulation rather than governance. The electorate will lose faith in the process because their choice and voice is never allowed to function.

Pakistan is a massive country with massive issues and they are not going to be resolved quickly. The only thing we can do is support the flawed, ugly and snail paced democratic process we have currently, and reform it over time. Any other option (military rule, revolution etc) means we lose all progress and repeat the cycle, and it will take longer and be even more torturous next time around.

It's called hierarchy of needs - people want their basic needs met first and foremost. The West offers them the opportunity for material wealth. The 'spiritual needs' never go away, and return to a position of primacy after material needs are met. In some cases these needs evolve into more conservative religious outlooks from moderate ones (for a variety of reasons), in others the needs were conservative or extreme to begin with, and in yet others you see them fade away.
