What's new

Iranian Space program

Yes the North Koreans have made 5 attempts to launch satellites. The last 2 have succeeded, however

According to western sources, North Korea's first satellite, Kwangmyŏngsŏng-3 Unit 2, continued tumbling out of control after being put into orbit and never transmitted any signals. The North Koreans however insisted that it functioned normally as planned

According to western sources, North Korea's second satellite Kwangmyŏngsŏng-4, never transmitted any signals. This time the satellite was mostly stabilized after tumbling out of control initially. However again the North Koreans contradict this claim.

The North Korean SLVs transitioned from a payload of 100 kg to 200 kg. Iran on the other hand tried to make the leap from a payload of 50 kg to 350 kg after having failed to launch a more optimized variant of Safir with a 100 kg payload. The Safir SLV has since been retired and succeeded by the Zoljanah which has a payload of 200 kg. The Simorgh has a payload of 350 kg.

Iran has ambitions to eventually place medium and then large satellites (1 ton and larger), into GEO. Now that the budget for the space program has been significantly increased, we will have to wait and see what happens. According to officials, this calendar year will be very eventful.

You can blame Rouhani and his moderates all you want but the fact is under his government there was at least some progress on irans space program. It is not as though space program was frozen for 8 years.

Iranian space program under Rouhani admin:

- Successful launch of Fajr in February 2015
- Successful sub-orbital test of Simorgh in April 2016
- First test launch of solid fuel Zuljanah SLV in February 2021
- Development of new lightweight solid motors like "Salman"
- Qased mobile SLV
- Multiple test launches of Simorgh SLV

Spacex Falcon-1 only failed 3 times before it succeeded on its 4th launch and north korea also failed 3 times before its Unha-3 succeeded for the first time in December 2012. Both these SLV's had less failure than Simorgh which is now on its fourth consecutive launch failure.

So counting the Soviet Union and Russia as one and the same that would only leave 12. Then considering the few nations that could not be able to launch a satellite without significant external assistance, there are only really around 10 nations in the game.

I only count 9 including Iran by that definition.

.
Iran isn't receiving significant external help from anyone in regards to its space program, be it financial, technical or otherwise. If you want to disqualify Iran because Iran uses rocket technology that was acquired from North Korea at some point, then you should also disqualify China since they used rocket technology that was acquired from the Soviets at some point yes ?

Iran began purchasing North Korean missiles in the 1980's during the Iran-Iraq war, after Saddam invaded Iran. Since then Iran has developed its own independent missile program. Some analysts believe that Iran and North Korea cooperate in funding, researching and developing missile technology. However this cooperation has a military dimension to it.

When it comes to space related endeavors, each country is on its own path. This has been made especially obvious by the fact that each nation has had a varying levels of success and failure with various SLV platforms.

I would take Ukraine and Israel off the list though. Ukraine was only able to do it by using a leftover Soviet rocket after the fall of the Soviet Union and from Kazakhstan, never from Ukraine itself. Israel is more or less a western / US colony and wouldn't even be able to exist without billions handed to them by US taxpayers on a monthly basis.

I only count 9 including Iran by that definition.

I disagree. Yes IRGC did successfully use the Qased rocket to launch the Noor satellite into space. However the Noor satellite weights 6-12 KG at the most. It has been described as a webcam in space with solar panels. Likely a nano satellite (1-10 KG).

In 2009 Iran's first SLV rocket Safir, placed the Omid satellite into space and Omid weighed 25 KG, which would qualify it as a micro satellite (10-100 KG).

Since then Iran has been able to put 50 KG satellites, such as FAJR, into orbit with an upgraded Safir rocket. The Zoljanah rocket (with a 200 KG payload) has now replaced the Safir, with its first launch being successful

The Simorgh has a payload capacity of 200-350 KG, Yes the Simorgh has failed several times but along the way they have mastered the 1st and 2nd stage. Now the only hurdle is the 3rd stage.

In the big picture, the IRGCs achievement is really nothing special. At this point in time Iran can easily place satellites with a 50 KG playload into space all day, but it would honestly be a waste of valuable resources.

Iran's current goal is clearly to master placing a mini satellite (100-350 KG) into space and then move onto medium sized satellites (500-1000 KG) and then finally large satellites (>1000KG).

IRGC should just take over their projects. Clearly this agency is not capable of producing results.

of course its not, why would anyone help them with that?

Why would I disqualify Iran? China, Russia & US all relied on stolen German technology.

Ukraine just kept Soviet Know-how, and is a former Russian colony,

Israel is just a colony as you say. But they were given the know how. Much the same way Australia and Canada have been given know how and will be given know how if it becomes necessary.

.
You're an idiot.

It wasn't stolen, at very least by Russians as it is form of reparation for German invasion and Ukraine wasn't Russian colony since one of leaders of Soviet Union was Ukrainian.

I'm sorry, USA and USSR stole German V2 rockets and schematics and industrial processes and took it all to their respective countries. This si stolen technology because the owners of it did not give it to them, they stole it. They also kidnapped German scientists and made them work at gunpoint for 20 years do develop this technology further. This is all provable fact. Dont blame me if you dont know historical facts.

And Ukraine was indeed a Russian colony. Back from the Russian empire days. When the Russian empire was dressed up as the Soviet Union it still stayed the Russian empire under a different name. Yes perhaps Khruschev was an ethnic Ukrainian. But that would be no different than if the British empire had an Irish prime minister, Its still a colony. Just like Croatia was a Serbian colony until 1991 even though some Yugoslav leaders were ethnic Croats.

Irony of you talking about historical facts while not being factual.

Your so called provable fact rely on omission of fact of reparations which you ignore despite being informed about that undeniable fact.

Ukraine gained land mass under Khruschev's leadership of Soviet Union which now in present day same territory given to Ukraine is now a conflict zone.

You that live in Australia are detached from reality like those Croats and Serbs that live there that continue to live in past and continue to be ignorant of reality of Yugoslav region.

Serbs did not have power in second Yugoslavia like they did in first Yugoslavia they ruled and only during late 1980s when they started violating and subverting rules of federation is when they through unlawful means disturbed balance. Leaders of Croats and Bosniaks took chance for separatism and ironically Croatia is under European Union with far less rights.

Let's not pollute this thread with sewage known as Yugoslavia. Let's stick to Iranian space program which is far more interesting.

. .
That so called sewage had actual competent arms industry and military.

There was a lot of hype. But in reality looking back on it, by the 1980's Yugoslavia was probably as militarily strong as Belgium, knowing what we know now. The arms industry was very much second rate for European standards. I wish there was place were we could continue this conversation. But it can't be here.

Please stay civil. We're not like that here.
