Iranian Space program

Here is a website where u can track Nour. I couldn't find the Nour satellite at first until I typed in the name NOUR, with a U after the O and pressed the track button. I'm not very scientifically inclined however if you look at the right side of the screen underneath the column that says Nour 01, various numbers/variables keep changing, including Latitude, Longitude, etc. Does this mean anything ? Does this verify anything ?

This article implies that Iran by passed US sanctions and acquired the Noor satellite from the Mexicans who in turn got it from the USA. He says that Noor is barely visible because of how small it is and that it is not a 6U cubesat, which is imaged on the rockets decal.

This is from June 3rd

My question was not about tracking Nour itself. It was about the text that I quoted and the reason to have a third stage.
Reason for combined Arash 24 and Salman?
Check out this quote:

I'm honestly not sure. I've heard so many things about Nour. Most pundits are generally positive, others skeptical, negative, etc. I've heard all kinds of theories and remarks. One thing is for sure, it's a step forward for Iran, but the question is, when will Iran start putting large communication and military satellites in space ? Also when will Iran actually power 10% of the power grid with nuclear energy ?

When it comes to the Iranian government and especially IRGC, they make so many claims and it's usually either hit or miss. I'm not sure if this is to throw off the enemy/adversaries, but at the end of the day I'm not happy with Iran's foreign policy. Look at china, America's biggest adversary yet they've made a fortune on the USA. American banks owe them billions, meanwhile Iran is the boogeyman and completely isolated from the world... Also Iran's military / IRGC have some work to do. Look at the recent shooting down of that passenger plane and recently the accident at sea...

I don't know much about professional astronomy, but I can share with you what I know. I hope it would be useful for you.

Newton's universal law of gravitation implies that the path of a satellite orbiting around the Earth in general must be an ellipse (because it has to be a closed conic section) where the Earth will be at one of its foci. You can determine an ellipse on the plane by knowing its apogee (furthest distance from the Earth) and its perigee (closest distance from the Earth).

apogee.png

These two parameters together determine the shape of the ellipse, but to fully determine the orbit of the satellite, you also need one parameter to determine the plane where the ellipse lives in. So, you need another parameter called the angle of inclination that is measured from the equator of the Earth as shown in the following picture:

14189_124_2.jpg

Note that if your perigee and apogee are the same, you will get a circle as an important special case. An ideal circular orbit has the amazing property that the amount of work done by gravitation on the satellite is zero (this relates to the geometric fact that a radial line from the center to a point on the circle will be perpendicular to the tangent at that point).

So, theoretically, the closer to circular your orbit is, the more stable it will be and your satellite will stay in its orbit for a longer period of time.

Now, the movement of your satellite relative to the Earth doesn't stay in the same plane all the time because the Earth rotates around its axis. So, as the Earth rotates around its axis, your satellite sweeps and covers all of the Earth. If you assume the Earth to be fixed, you can imagine the path of the satellite to be like an elliptic orbit that its orbit shifts a little each time it rotates around the Earth like the following picture:

sun-synchronous.png

Once you know the altitude of your satellite, you can determine the position of your satellite as observed on the Earth by radially projecting it on the Earth. As points on the Earth can be determined by two numbers (longitude and latitude), you can use these two numbers to tell where your satellite currently is.

If your satellite is at an altitude of 35,786 kilometers from the Earth, it will be in a geosynchronous equatorial orbit (GEO). Meaning that it will stay at the same point because its rotation will match that of the Earth. This is very useful for telecommunication satellites that have to remain accessible to ground stations.

So, the only thing those numbers verify is that the Nour satellite continues to orbit the Earth. Whether it is a "tumbling webcam" or not cannot be determined from its path. Observers in places near our ground stations should verify whether the Nour satellite is sending signals or not. And as the communication will be most likely encrypted, it will be almost impossible to know what kind of data it is sending.

The article is wrong. It claims that the Qased-e-Noor-1 space launcher has a third stage.

This means that there are only the Salman-1 solid propellant second stage and the Noor-1 satellite orbiting the Earth.

And from the Mission Control screen, we know that following the second stage's ignition at T=150 seconds, a third burn was performed at T=420 seconds:

Another screen of the Mission Control shows that there is a liquid propellant tank feeding 6 engine nozzles, and it is this final unit that has circularized the satellite's orbit:

From the mission logo, it is obvious that the 6 engine nozzles are those fitted on the Noor-1 satellite itself and not a third orbital insertion kick-stage, the Israeli Samson satellite being fitted with 4 engine nozzles:

Small clarification from my previous assessment.

Iran's missile capability close to join North Korea and China

7th June 2020

The Noor-1 satellite is a small satellite that is only a few liters in size and is estimated to weigh between 5 and 14 kilograms. Very small satellite for spy purposes in the sky.

The Noor-1 satellite was orbited by a satellite carrier, the third stage of which is a solid-fuel rocket. Arash-24 is probably more than 100 kg and Salman-1 probably weighs more than 300 kg.

Taking into account the Nour-1 satellite and the third stage, we see that the IRGC has the ability to send a net orbiting mass of about 105-344 kg over the United States.

The IRGC appears to be deliberately trying to demonstrate its space capability by separating the Noor-1 satellite from the third stage.

These IRGC missiles are capable of carrying the extremely small warheads weighing less than 90 kg over the United States.

Gen. Amir Hajizadeh told at the news conference that the IRGC plans to put Noor-2 into orbit in June.

From a new Iranian article posted on 7th June 2020, the third stage is presented as the solid-propellant Arash-24, with a purported mass of ~100 kg. The mass of the Salman-1 second stage being about ~300 kg.

And from the Mission Control screen, we know that following the second stage's ignition at T=150 seconds, a third burn was performed at T=420 seconds.

This means that currently there are only the Arash-24 solid propellant third stage and the Noor-1 satellite orbiting the Earth.

The Salman-1 solid propellant second stage reaching only a velocity of 5'250 m/s at cut-off, after 70 seconds of burn, and a 403 km altitude, simply re-entered the atmosphere, unable to reach orbital velocity.

This orbital insertion velocity of ~7'650 m/s was achieved with the third stage Arash-24, reaching an apogee of ~444 km.

Thereafter, the Noor satellite used its own six cold gas thrusters to separate from the third stage and manoeuvre in orbit, orienting its camera toward the earth's surface.

There is a problem with google translation of the article. The correction:

“IRGC is trying to smooth out and downplay its space launch capacity by separating Nour and the third stage.”

2. The title is made up by you and the article does not say Iran getting closer to NK or China.

3. Official statement is that “Salman was successfully tested”. If it reentered the earth, it did its job successfully and reentered as planned.

Venezuela-Bound Oil Tankers Tracked by Iranian Satellite: IRGC General

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Aerospace Force Space Division said the homegrown ‘Noor’ (light) satellite that was launched into space in April is fully operational and has been used to track the oil tankers that recently carried fuel to Venezuela.

one question: do we have an option to hold this satellite on an specific position in space over Israel for example or it's just rounding around earth and sometimes passes from over them??

Probably not as it will require too much energy for the satellite to overcome its natural orbital trajectory and stay in one place and the solar panels won't be able to provide that much energy. Besides that, the satellite has to be over Iran for our ground stations to receive its signal.

So, it will keep orbiting the Earth and record data. It will send the recorded data to us when the satellite is over our ground stations. The satellite is of no value for real time espionage.

Spy satellite should be placed at 450-700 km for closer vision. However there is one limitation from college physics:
- Satellite at 36000 is geostationary and rotates once a day like the moon.
- Satellite at 450 km rotates multiple times a day but is closer to the earth and better for espionage.

The best method is to have multiple satellites at 700 km and combine the views.

Having the satellite stationary basically means that the satellite will just fall back to the earth. It's impossible to have a satellite stationary on one point unless it has an engine that is pointing towards the earth and countering earth's gravity. But that's hard to accomplish because after staying stationary like that, it has to reorbit the earth again and that would require even more fuel.

But something that can be done with the iranian satellite is that it can slightly manoeuvre and fix its position so that it can pass over that point it is trying to observe.

Also this is a website I found which shows Nour's location.

It won't be stationary, it will appear to be stationary by an observer on the Earth because the rotation of the satellite around the Earth is synchronized with that of the Earth around its axis. If a satellite is placed in an orbit that is at an approximately 36,000 km altitude, it will remain at the same spot without engines. That's why telecommunication satellites are usually placed in the GEO.

But Nour is in LEO at an altitude about 450 kilometers from the Earth. If it wants to stay on one spot, it will require a massive energy to overcome its natural orbital trajectory and its solar panels won't be enough to provide that.
