World-renowned Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi’s shooting project for his religious blockbuster Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in South Africa has been finished.


After five days shooting in the city of Bela-Bela in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, Majidi announced end of the project and came back to Iran this morning.

While the main parts of the film had been shot in Iran, Majidi along with his team traveled to Africa few weeks ago to seek appropriate locations for few sections of the project.

American filmmaker and Hollywood visual effects supervisor Scott E. Anderson also accompanied the Iranian team in Africa, Mehr News Agency reported.

Majidi's recent cinematic rendition focuses on Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) life from childhood until prophethood. The first draft of the screenplay was co-authored by Majidi and Iranian filmmaker and screenwriter Kambuzia Partovi.

Historical documents and facts have been compiled with the help of scholars, historians and clerics from different countries including Iran, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, Iraq and Algeria over a year.

The cast members were selected under the supervision of Majidi and Italian makeup artist Giannetto De Rossi who collaborated in the grand project.

Three-time Academy Award winning Italian cameraman Vittorio Storaro also contributed to the project.

Storaro who has great projects such as Apocalypse Now, Reds and The Last Emperor, visited Iran last year to meet with the Iranian cast and crew.

Produced by Mohammad Mehdi Heidarian, the film has been set to be released in Persian, Arabic and English.

Majid Majidi is an internationally and critically acclaimed Iranian film director, film producer, and screen writer whose films have touched on many themes and genres and has won many international awards.

Iranian legend Majidi to shoot new film in India

Oscar-nominated Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi (inset) is all set to shoot his new project, Floating Gardens, in India with Indian actors.

Produced by the Indian production house Eye Candy Films, the film will be made in English and Hindi and is scheduled to go on floors early next year.

Popular for narrating stories on human bonding and relationships, particularly those of father and son, Majidi plans to delve into a relationship- based story set against the Indian backdrop. In the past, Majidi's acclaimed films have included Children of Heaven, Baran and Songs of Sparrows.

Major portions of Floating Gardens will be shot in Shimla and Nainital and Majidi wants an Indian for the lead role.

"I have always wanted to shoot in India because I have always felt that both Iran and India have the same cultural sensibilities. The shooting of my current film Prophet Muhammed ( PBUH) is complete and I am currently in Munich working on its post production. After I finish this film, I look forward to visiting India and start the pre- production and casting for my next film," said Majidi in a statement.

"It is a dramatic film based on human values and I am looking forward to working with the team at Eye Candy Films," added Majidi, who plans to visit India next month to finalize locations and cast of the film.

This is a big budget film that will have both Indian and foreign crew.

Kishor Arora and Shareen Mantri Kedia, producers of the project for Eye Candy Films, approached Majidi to shoot for an Indian film two years ago but he finally gave a go-ahead only a month back.

"The Indian film market has changed and so has the audience taste. There are numerous Majidi fans in India who are looking forward to an Indian film with relatable content," said Shareen.

In the past, Majidi has visited India to participate in various films festivals and meet his friends.

Majidi's current film, Prophet Muhammad, is a film that traces the Prophet's life from childhood to prophethood.

Some portions of the film, which had to show herds of elephants and dense forests, were planned to be shot in India but later the entire film was shot in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.
