Iran summons Greek envoy over oil tanker seizure

Tehran says Iranian-flagged ship seized in Greek territorial waters

The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday summoned the Greek charge d’affaires in Tehran to protest the seizure of an Iranian-flagged ship in Greece’s territorial waters.

The ministry described the seizure as “an example of international banditry.”

Iran summons Greek diplomat over seizing of ship's cargo

The IRNA news agency reported that an Iran-flagged ship had to stop in Greek waters due to technical problems and was being held by the Greek government off of Greece’s coast. The news agency claimed the vessel’s cargo was confiscated with a court order under pressure from the United States. The report didn’t say what the cargo was.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry called the measure “international piracy.”
There was no immediate comment from Greek officials.

The semi-official Mehr news agency reported that Iran’s ports and maritime organization said the vessel was a tanker operating under the Iranian flag and that it had faced bad weather conditions and experienced some technical problems. That led the vessel’s crew to call for assistance, according to the report.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran, which has been under international sanctions since former President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from Iran’s 2015 nuclear accord with world powers in 2018.
The U.S. seized the cargo of two tankers suspected of transporting Iranian oil as part of an elaborate sanctions-busting scheme involving forged documents and the repainting of a ship’s deck to cloak illegal shipments.
Details of the seizure were contained in a federal civil case unsealed in February after the Greek-managed vessels discharged their valuable cargo, worth about $38 million, in Houston and the Bahamas at the direction of U.S. law enforcement.

How does Greece allow such banditry in its territorial waters? More precisely, did the USA ask for permission from Greece?

I'm thinking the same.

Greece is currently a US outpost base, and the US military presence is growing expotantally in this country's territory with very broad privileges. Nothing comes for free.

Iranian oil seized by Greece is being transported to the USA by another ship.

@Hack-Hook

This is the national wealth of a state and its citizens. Stolen property is the property of a people. Greece took a very wrong path by disregarding its own interests in the usurpation of Iranian oil.

The people, all we are, that do not raise their voices against this banditry of the USA and its slave states today will contribute to the ordinaryization of these banditry if we continue this passive attitude.

This is unacceptable. The United States and its puppets are destroying international maritime law.

Sadly these people think USA will protect them. They never learn.

. . . . . . .
Our government is trying to show what a loyal ally it is,in hopes the Americans will pull Erdogan's ear?

They've been showing extreme zeal the last few years. First they stopped buying Iranian oil, even though the Americans excluded Greece and Italy from sanctions when it came to Iranian oil, then they started sending help to Ukraine.

Reminds me of the 20th century Venizelos government that wanted to get in WWI for the allies and later wanted to send soldiers in Gallipoli,to gain the favor of the British.

Sadly these people think USA will protect them. They never learn.
It's the government who thinks that, bro. Even though they didn't have to,they stopped buying Iranian oil to appease the Americans.

It looks like the Americans are behind this:

Ah,it's all about Russia after all

Greek media said the Lana tanker was believed to be carrying more than 100,000 tons of Iranian crude, in breach of United States and European Union sanctions on Iran.

The vessel had been temporarily seized by Greek authorities on April 15 when it anchored off Karystos.
At the time, it was flying a Russian flag, had recently changed its name from Pegas to Lana and was carrying a crew of 19 Russians. Greece's coast guard said it was seized due to suspicions it had breached EU sanctions imposed against Russia due to the war in Ukraine.
The bloc's sanctions include import and export bans for a wide variety of goods, and a ban on access to EU ports by Russian-flagged ships.
