Pakistan shelves multi-billion dollar gas pipeline project with Iran under pressure from US: Report

Pakistan has temporarily shelved the multi-billion dollar gas pipeline project to import cheap energy from neighbouring Iran, apparently under pressure from the US which has imposed sanctions against Tehran over its nuclear programme, according to a media report on Monday.

The development comes as Pakistan struggles to put its cash-strapped economy in order with the help of the International Monetary Fund, which agreed to provide USD 3 billion in loan.

The project was initially conceived as an India-Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline, but later, India left it and became a bilateral project between Pakistan and Iran.

The sanctions imposed by the US on Iran over its nuclear programme have deterred Pakistan from constructing the pipeline.

"Pakistan has issued a Force Majeure and Excusing Event notice to Iran under the Gas Sales and Purchase Agreement (GSPA), which resultantly suspends Pakistan's obligations under the GSPA," according to a written testimony Minister of State for Petroleum Musadik Malik has given to the National Assembly.

In a policy statement placed on the floor of the lower house of Parliament, the minister also put on record that Iran disputed the notice of force majeure and excusing event.

"The Iran Pakistan Gas Pipeline Project is stalled due to international sanctions on Iran," said Malik clarifying the project activities will begin once sanctions on Iran are removed and there is no threat that State Owned Entities (SOEs) would be hit by sanctions.

"Given that, no date and deadline can be given for the completion of the Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline Project," he added.

At the same time, the petroleum minister also conceded that Pakistan's notice of force majeure and excusing event and Iran disputing its validity could only be finally settled through international arbitration, should Iran take this matter to arbitration.

As a consequence, "the exact amount of penalty, if any, is subject to the outcome of the arbitration to be determined by the arbitrators", he said.

Iran must initiate arbitration proceedings immediately. There are no relevant "international" sanctions against Iran that would prohibit Pakistan from complying with its obligations under the GSPA (only US sanctions + some EU sanctions).
No surprise here..When akhoonds are going to learn!..Iran should forget about our immediate neighborhood and look for business beyond ..India, Vietnam, Brazil, etc..all upcoming nations with money generation capability and they can pay their bills..arabs are not going to make business with us and others are too broke so we should move on..

Meanwhile lets enjoy the home product of "Tokhmeh aftab gardoon" grown in these magneficient fields while we are trying to collect our bills from Japan and korea and Iraq and China and oman and etc....:undecided:

we will see.
if iran did anything against others it will also do something about this

by the way in my book its better not to sell gas , instead build some petrochemical facility and convert the gas to product that worth 1000 time more.
but sadly our official like to sell our resources for cheap

Agreed, but Iran has enough gas to do both and selling gas is a good interim revenue stream until more petchem facilities come online

About suing Pakistan, it would be a point of principle because there is no way to enforce any arbitral award made against them anyway

in my experience by how our official think, look at oil our Officials take the easy route and after one hundred or more year of exporting oil we still don't have enough refinery to export refined oil and export unrefined oil at discount
if we get addicted to exporting gas we are still call it as interim solution in next one hundred year

I agree. Iran must rid itself of exporting its body parts. NOW. Period.

War needs money. Turkey neither has the cash (hyper inflated lira) nor the political will (domestic population support) for such an endeavor.

NATO already spending billions on Ukraine so opening another front is ill advised.

But Turkey lost anyway, regardless if it moves it troops out of Syria or not. So the question is: Does Turkey want the "doubble loss" including many death turks and a economy what dive a lot more (if it is even possible), or just move out and then can try to build up a picture of "good Turkey" in the world (whereas not all if any will believe it).

Iran has moved some American prisoners to house arrest — a step to possible release

namazi-27166b8af0aa0ad63521e226df4a1b4463640ef8-s900-c85.webp

Namazi's brother issued a statement expressing hope for the prisoners' eventual release from custody.

"We are grateful that Siamak and the other Americans in Iran are out of Evin Prison and will be under house arrest. While this is a positive change, we will not rest until Siamak and the others are back home," said Babak Namazi. "We have suffered tremendously and indescribably for eight horrific years."

The lawyer's statement says three of the Americans were seen leaving the prison and it was believed — but not confirmed — that a fourth was also leaving, because that person had been told with the others of their move in a meeting inside the prison.

Panama-Flagged Tanker Catches Fire Near Iranian Coast - TV

DUBAI (Reuters) - A Panama-flagged tanker called White Pearl has caught fire near Assaluyeh on Iran's Gulf coast, Iranian state media reported on Thursday, adding that all crew members were safe.

"Twenty-two of the ship's crew have been rescued by Iranian rescue teams after the ship's captain requested assistance from the port authorities," state TV quoted a local ports official as saying.

The official said that the tanker, carrying 40,000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas, had experienced "a problem in the engine room due to a fire."

Panama's vessel registry, the world's largest, has withdrawn its flag from 136 ships linked to Iran's state oil company in the last four years, the country's maritime authority said in January.

If the United States designed IRGC as a terrorist entity, why aren't they opening fire on IRGC vessels and warships when they cross instead of filming for unknown purposes?
If Israel designed Hezbollah as terrorist, why aren't they bombing them?

Why the US army isn't intercepting Iranian terrorist missiles inside Iran from UAE when Iran tests them inside Iran?

I do not know their law, but crossing what they call "terrorists" and doing nothing is counterproductive and nonsensical, they are doing it with ISIS but why not Iran?
