Iran Warns against US Military Presence in Afghanistan, Lesson to India

3. "Iran & Pakistan shares common interest in Afghanistan."
Bollocks. There is only one thing common that Pakistan and Iran have, and that is that both wish to see the back of the USA in Afghanistan. Both of them want the US to leave so that they can drastically increase their own interference in Afghanistan. The US has been playing spoilsport, so they want it out. The commonalities end there. A Wahabi Taliban government in Pakistan formed by Mullah Omar and his cronies can not be further from Iranian interests. This is just what Pakistan wants. The interests of Iran and Pakistan in Afghanistan could not be more divergent. Pakistan with the backing of Saudi Arabia, want to enhance and spread the influence of Wahabi/Salafi Sunnism, whereas, Iran wants to limit this very influence.

That is a very limitied view of regional politics and Pakistan you have dear. Pakistan as a country has far bigger challenges to meet than being assigned the only task of spreading wahabism like you proclaim as if we are sitting in the land of fairy tale where money grows on trees. By the way, the same wahabism you staunchly attack is a byproduct of your own Indian institutes aka "Deoband".

The Roman Empire didn’t decline and fall sedately, as historians used to claim. It collapsed within a few decades in the early fifth century, tipped over the edge of chaos by barbarian invaders and internal divisions. In the space of a generation, the vast imperial metropolis of Rome fell into disrepair, the aqueducts broken, the splendid marketplaces deserted.

Iran Warns against US Military Presence in Afghanistan, Lesson to India

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said the US is using the so-called war on terrorism as an excuse to guarantee its long-term presence in the war-torn country.

"Unfortunately, evidence indicates that the US intends to extend its military presence in Afghanistan in a bid to attain its trans-regional goals and eradication of terrorism has just been an excuse for its military presence in Afghanistan and the region," Salehi said addressing the Istanbul International conference on Afghanistan.

He pointed to the US efforts to establish permanent military bases in Afghanistan, and stated, "Legalizing foreign military bases in Afghanistan runs counter to Afghanistan's and the international community's position which focuses on peaceful solutions."

Salehi also said that such a move would also cause radicalism and terrorism to continue in the region.

Iran has repeatedly deplored possible plans for the establishment of permanent US military bases in Afghanistan, stressing that the bases would be a source of permanent insecurity from Iran's neighbor.

Rahim Mohammadi Yekta, the chief Iranian consul in Heart, told a press conference on Sunday that Iran opposes any form of foreign interference in Afghanistan.

The senior Iranian diplomat emphasized that foreign troops have been unsuccessful in establishing security in Afghanistan and, in fact, security has steadily decreased.

"These people with their 200,000 troops have failed to establish security," Mohammadi Yekta said. "How can they be expected to do so with a few military bases?"

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has tried to calm the concerns of his neighbors by saying any agreement signed with the US will be in "the political, economic and military interest of Afghanistan" and the precondition of any agreement would be "the establishment of peace and the provision of stability in Afghanistan."

1. Well, you can't deny that a power struggle and a struggle for domination of the Muslim world has been going on for many decades now between radical Sunnis and radical Shias. The principle protagonists in this drama have been Saudi Arabia and Iran. Pakistan has been firmly in the Saudi camp. This was one of the main reasons for the Saudis financing the Afghan Mujahideen and recognising the Mullah Omar govt. while opposition to Soviet rule in Afghanistan was a reason, the bigger reason was to neutralise the growing Shia influence further west in Lebanon, Syria etc. Pakistan govt permitting its ex-servicemen to go and fight against Shia protesters in Bahrain is a case in point. I have heard many Pakistanis say that the GOP has little say in retired people visiting foreign countries to participate in mercenary activities, but this is not so. If the activities of these people is contrary to the government foreign policy and if they embarrass the GOP or harm Pakistani interests, then the GOP has every right to deny them permission to travel abroad. Obviously, there is tacit approval at the highest levels.

2. "By the way, the same wahabism you staunchly attack is a byproduct of your own Indian institutes aka "Deoband".
I know that.

How does India fit into this?

While some of the statements made by the Iranian official are true, I doubt if India's intentions are the same as that of the US.

Iran has never threatened India or vice versa.

Misleading title I'd say. Way to fail Lankan Ranger

.
This whole problem started because Pakistan invited USA into this place by sucking upto them and now they are paying the bill, simple as that.

I don't think the Pakistanis really had a choice in the matter. It was either with the US or against them, remember words of GW Bush?
Could Musharraf have given the finger to the Americans? Especially right after 9/11 when international sympathy was with them? It is easy to blame Mushy for all the mess but did he really have a choice? Pakistani nuclear deterrence is meaningless against USA, they were threatened to be bombed back to stone age if they failed to cooperate, which was a very real possibility, so they gave in.
Pakistanis are very proud of their geo strategic location. I think it is their curse as it attracts attention of all manners of unsavory characters like the Soviets, Americans or Chinese to their immediate neighborhood each of whom bring their own brand of instability to Pakistan.

This is a false flag flame post. The article is OK and well meaning but the title and subsequent posts/comments have given it a twist which were not intended by the author nor are do they make sense.
Where are the lessons for India?
1. "Rahim Mohammadi Yekta, the chief Iranian consul in Heart, told a press conference on Sunday that Iran opposes any form of foreign interference in Afghanistan."
Where is Indian interference in Afghanistan? India has a presence in Afghanistan yes. So do many other countries like Russia, China and Iran. Does that amount to interference? Not by any stretch of imagination.
On the contrary, Pakistan has been actively interfering in Afghanistan in order to try and shape things more to its liking. If the article has a lesson for any country, it is Pakistan.

2. "These people with their 200,000 troops have failed to establish security," Mohammadi Yekta said. "How can they be expected to do so with a few military bases?"
Every one knows that US military bases in Afghanistan are not meant for Afghanistan alone. They are to enable the US the capability to intervene anywhere in the CAR including Pakistan if the need arises.

thats where they are wrong. the destroyed a whole country which is today left in chaos and then use afghanistan for their own interest? the americans are walking the wrong path. and what do you think those troops will do in pakistan? they cant even defeat poorly armed talibans for the last 10 years, let aline the might of PA.

Where is India mentioned except in the concocted title?

BTW, foreign interference could also be a signal for Pakistan.

Pakistan does not need to have a MILITARY PRESENCE in Afghanistan, GENIUS.

We have Taliban who are citizens of Afghanistan.
