Iran's navy launched a domestically made destroyer, which state media said has radar-evading stealth properties, amid rising tensions with the United States.

In a ceremony carried live on state television on Saturday, the Sahand destroyer - which can sustain voyages lasting five months without resupply - joined Iran's navy at a base in Bandar Abbas on the Gulf.

The Sahand has a flight deck for helicopters, torpedo launchers, anti-aircraft and anti-ship guns, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles and electronic warfare capabilities, state television reported.

US President Donald Trump pulled out of an international agreement on Iran's nuclear programme in May and reimposed sanctions on Tehran. He said the deal was flawed because it did not include curbs on Iran's development of ballistic missiles or its support for proxies in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Iraq.

The Trump administration has said its goal is to reduce Iran's oil exports to zero. Senior Iranian officials have said that if Iran is not allowed to export, then no other countries will be allowed to export oil through the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Gulf.

"This vessel is the result of daring and creative design relying on the local technical knowledge of the Iranian Navy ... and has been built with stealth capabilities," Rear-Admiral Alireza Sheikhi, head of the navy shipyards that built the destroyer, told the state news agency IRNA.

Iran launched its first locally made destroyer in 2010 as part of a programme to revamp its navy equipment which dates from before the 1979 Islamic revolution and is mostly US-made.

Iran has developed a large domestic arms industry in the face of international sanctionsand embargoes that have barred it from importing many weapons.

Separately, a naval commander said Sahand may be among warships that Iran plans to send on a mission to Venezuela soon.

"Among our plans in the near future is to send two or three vessels with special helicopters to Venezuela in South America on a mission that could last five months," Iran's deputy navy commander, Rear-Admiral Touraj Hassani Moqaddam, told the semi-official news agency Mehr.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said last week Iran should increase its military capability and readiness to ward off enemies, in a meeting with Iranian navy commanders.

Iran's navy has extended its reach in recent years, launching vessels in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden to protect Iranian ships from Somali pirates operating in the area.

The chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces said in 2016 that Iran may seek to set up naval bases in Yemen or Syria in the future, raising the prospect of distant footholds perhaps being more valuable militarily to Tehran than nuclear technology.

In August, Iranian state media showed President Hassan Rouhani unveiling new domestic made fighter jet.

it's characteristic?
weight etc?

. . . .
I am pretty sure it is classified as a frigate.

The Persian Gulf class are the destroyers.

The Iranian classification of warships is bit of a mess and confusing. I personally think its more akin to a Littoral Combat Ship class, slightly heavier and more capable then a corvette.

The length of Sahand is 98 meters

Its body width is 15 meters

The weight of the Sahand destroyer is about 2 thousand tons

One of the factors that has made Sahand more stealth is the design of the ship's deck. The uniformity of the body surface from the bottom of the body to the deck has led to less radar reflection for Sahand. Of course, the increased width of Sahand compared to Jamaran (instead of increasing the length to use more equipment) has led to a reduction in the radar reflectivity of the warship.

weapons include torpedo launchers, anti-aircraft and anti-surface guns, surface-to-surface and air-to-surface missile systems, anti-submarine systems, stealth technology, increased operational range, high maneuverability and electronic systems and CIWS system.

In the Sahand chest region, a 76 mm gun is installed, which is an all-automatic weapon capable of destroying various surface and air targets including anti personnel and anti ship missiles, firing over 120 bullets per minute. Sahand can target with radar and electrophetic systems with an effective range of 12,000 and a final range of 17,000 meters. All of these weapons are made by Iran defense industry.

One of the most important features of Sahand's destroyer is its high sailing power. The strong structure of the body has made the ship to go for more than 150 days of sailing in turbulent waters without support.

The price of similar destroyers is over $ 300 million, but the most advanced Iranian warship has been constructed in far less than a third. According to experts, the latest Army Navy destroyer can traverse 16,000 kilometers of Iranian coastline to the United States' borders at a time of approximately 20 days.

Radar usage is old style
Will be replaced with a new phased array radar. It is not the final outfit for Sahand frigate. She will receive new radar, I/O IR fire control, an CIWS Kamand, etc ... Seems like they just wanted to unveil it on Navy day.. but the main unveilings are just underway (40th Iranian revolution anniversary) ..

. .
3-4 More ships joining Iranian Navy , so some movement
Iran had nobody to ask for assistance. She started a vary daring move to even look at big ships and submarines. The whole thing started back in 1997 when Supreme leader Khamenei told navy commanders, why don't u build your own warships and Iranians can do it and we are capable and we should rely on our own powers. But since Iran had no experience in this field, it took them around 12 years to develop the know-how.

They had no assistance. Even Russians who sold us Kilo class submarines wanted to back stab Iran by asking the subs to be sent to Russia while asking a high price for the overhaul, a price bigger than what Iran paid for the sub itself (when there were great fears that they won't let Iranian get their hands on subs again due to sanctions).

So Iran was alone and this is why it took Iran some 12 years to build its first warship (Jamaran Frigate). But as you know, the time needed to build a warship became short and shorter. Today, Iran can finish building a Sahand size warship in 18 months.

So, I think Iran successfully passed the most difficult part of it. I think with current mindset in Iranian leadership, we might see around 2 or even 3 new warships every 3 years. This rate could easily be doubled if the gov allocated enough funds.

For a power like Iran that clearly has no global expansionism intentions unlike that of Russia, USA and China, the current rate of warship and submarine production is sufficient.

In 10 years from now, Iran would have around 8 to 10 new frigates and probably another 2 destroyers or cruisers. In 10 years Iran would build another 4 to 6 Fateh or Besat class submarines in addition to its already existing 3 kilo classes, 23 midget submarines, 1 Nahang Class, 1 Fateh Submarine.
