Iran Starts Mass-Production of Naval Cruise Missile

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran on Saturday inaugurated the production line of a newly unveiled naval cruise missile, called Zafar (Triumph).

The production line was inaugurated by Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi in a ceremony at the Defense Ministry' Aerospace Industries Organization on the occasion of the Ten-Day Dawn ceremonies, celebrating the anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution back in 1979.

The ceremony was also attended by Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Naval Force Brigadier General Ali Fadavi.

During the ceremony, the first cargo of Zafar missiles was delivered to the IRGC.

Speaking to reporters, Vahid said that "Zafar is a short-range, anti-ship, radar guided missile capable of hitting and destroying small and medium-sized targets with high precision".

He added that the missile can be mounted onto light and speed boats, enjoys a high capability in anti-electronic warfare and is highly destructive.

Iran has made giant progress in arms production, specially in area of missile technology, in the last decade.

Iran's latest cruise missile production, Qader (Mighty), was displayed to the public during the military parades marking the Week of Sacred Defense in September.

Later in September, the Iranian Defense Ministry supplied large numbers of the Qader anti-ship cruise missiles to the Iranian Army's and the IRGC naval forces to boost Iran's naval defense power.

Tehran launched an arms development program during the 1980-88 Iraqi imposed war on Iran to compensate for a US weapons embargo. Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles and fighter planes.

Yet, Iranian officials have always stressed that the country's military and arms programs serve defensive purposes and should not be perceived as a threat to any other country.

What's the speed and weight of the warhead?
good to know that it's radar guided but I personally prefer that Iran builds missiles with cable guidance that are totally safe from the US powerful jamming technology, we should build them and have numerous launchers in our coastal waters.

What's with the names!!! ;)

I wonder if Iran manage to make nuclear bomb, it will be named `Pasha' (Basha in farsi dialect)

isn't it obvious? Iran produces a lot of Chinese missiles under license. For example Noor.

That said, this looks different from C-704. Can somebody shed some light? I think this is based on the C-704 so it's an Iranian design actually.

It is actually designed to be small and evasive so that it can be installed on small speed boats. The strategy for these missiles is to have many of them installed on many boats which swarm bigger ships and fire simultaneously on them and taking them down. A low cost effective way to deal with a bigger navy. Even if you lose two dozen boats in the process but take down a 1.5 billion dollar frigate, still you have won the day. Also it would be extremely effective against helpless tankers which would go up in flames when even hit by one missile from a small boat from the distance of 100 kilometers. I would suggest Iranians also equip their boats with some modified and simplified tor missile system so they can defend themselves against aerial attack as well as give them a second anti-ship capability as tor missile is designed to work as an anti-ship missile as well. I guess a boat with 4 zafar missiles, one or two computer controlled 12.8 mm heavy machine guns, 8 modified tor missiles and a protection system like a combination of Shtora and Arena (countermeasure) systems similar to the ones installed on Russian tanks would make the boats more survivable and deadly. Just build a thousand of these boats and no navy in the world can mess with Iranian navy.

@ 500
Doesn't it look smaller to you? I dunno, maybe it's just me. Too lazy to go on an Iranian forum and compare the specs.
